Impact of Stirring Speed on β-Lactoglobulin Fibril Formation
Shy Kai Ng,Kar Lin Nyam,Imededdine Arbi Nehdi,Oi Ming Lai,Gun Hean Chong,Chin Ping Tan 한국식품과학회 2016 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.25 No.suppl1
β-Lactoglobulin (β-lg) can produce fibrils that have multi-functional properties. Impacts of different stirring speeds on characteristics of β-lg fibrils as a stable form in β-lg fibril solutions were investigated. Fibril concentration, fibril morphology, turbidity, particle size distribution, zeta potential, and rheological behavior of solutions were studied. Stirring enhanced fibril formation and stability of a fibril solution, in comparison with unstirred solutions. Increasing the stirring speed produced more turbidity and a greater distribution of particle sizes, higher viscosity values, but no differences in zeta potential values of β-lg fibril solutions. However, a high stirring speed is not feasible due to reduction of the fibril yield and changes in fibril morphology.
Modeling of Peak Hour Factor on Highways and Arterials
Shy Bassan 대한토목학회 2013 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.17 No.1
The peak hour factor characterizes the fluctuations of traffic flow based on the busiest 15 minutes during the peak hour. This parameter is used in the process of evaluating the traffic flow conditions such as capacity and Level of Service. The paper examines the impact of traffic on the PHF, and results in calibrated models that estimate the PHF of different road categories based on a large data set obtained from a recent cordon and screen line traffic survey of Tel Aviv metropolitan area in Israel. The PHF was estimated for four road categories based on the independent variables: total number of vehicles per lane per direction, total number of trucks per direction, and total number of buses per direction. The PHF resulted in the following ranges, based on the superior calibrated models with or without the impact of the heavy vehicle variables: 0.88-0.99 for rural freeways and multilane highways, 0.81-0.97 for twolane rural highways, 0.922-0.972 for urban and suburban freeways and multilane highways, and 0.91-0.98 for urban arterials. These volume based ranges partially include the uniform values proposed by the Highway Capacity Manual (2000, 2010). The rural model calibrations could be beneficial in estimating traffic flow rates for traffic engineering analysis when traffic counting is incomplete or not achievable. The urban models need further examination.

1. His life and achievement in education 2. His thought on education 3. His method of education 4. The significance in a history of education Go-dang, Jo man-sik (1883-?), who enlightened our society and instructed our people by his indomitable will, was an educator and a patriot who infused the racial spirit and the spirit of independence into the heart of our people. We can divide his thought on education into 3 parts; evangelism, personalism, and practical minds. Through the repeated experience, his thought on education was on the course of his putting a theory in practice, unification, and labour. His model human of education was a true person who lived up to his faith. In Go-dang's life, achievement on education, and though on education, we can find significance in a history of education as the followings: 1) He put the racial mission in good order and condition, realizing it and its importance. 2) Realizing that religion, school education, and industry are the concerted line of battle, he made a great effort for their interaction. 3) Through his practical sacrifice, he set a model to others. Go-dang, an educator who gave full play to his genius under the historiccal tension and who cultivated men of talent through a compromise between the educational knowledge and the originality of knowledge and a forerunner who could feel the meaningness of history, was a teacher of our people.

We have identified missense mutations at conserved amino acids in the PRPS1 gene on Xq22.3 in two families with a syndromic form of inherited peripheral neuropathy, one of Asian and one of European descent. The disease is inherited in an X-linked recessive manner, and the affected male patients invariably develop sensorineural hearing loss of prelingual type followed by gating disturbance and visual loss. The family of European descent was reported in 1967 as having Rosenberg-Chutorian syndrome, and recently a Korean family with the same symptom triad was identified with a novel disease locus CMTX5 on the chromosome band Xq21.32-q24. PRPS1 (phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate synthetase 1) is an isoform of the PRPS gene family and is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues, including cochlea. The enzyme mediates the biochemical step critical for purine metabolism and nucleotide biosynthesis. The mutations identified were E43D, in patients with Rosenberg-Chutorian syndrome, and M115T, in the Korean patients with CMTX5. We also showed decreased enzyme activity in patients with M115T. PRPS1 is the first CMT gene that encodes a metabolic enzyme, shedding a new light on the understanding of peripheral nerve-specific metabolism and also suggesting the potential of PRPS1 as a target for drugs in prevention and treatment of peripheral neuropathy by antimetabolite therapy.

In this study, the interaction of pH, biomass and initial concentrations of lead (Pb) and manganese (Mn)ions in simultaneous removal of Pb and Mn were investigated using the Box–Behnken design. The resultsshowed that there was a significant interaction between pH-Pb:Mn concentrations, pH-biomassconcentration and Pb:Mn-biomass concentrations. The maximum uptake of Pb and Mn was achieved atpH 7. By increasing the Pb and Mn concentrations from 10 to 50 mg/L, the uptake capacities alsoincreased. By increasing the biomass concentration from 0.3 to 1.5 g/L, the uptakes (g/g) of both metalions by Bacillus cereus I6 was depleted. The precipitation of Pb and Mn on the surface of B. cereus I6 cellswas confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fouriertransform infrared (FTIR). Thus, simultaneous biosorption of Pb and Mn by isolated I6 strain can beefficiently performed under different interactions of environmental factors.
Laser brazing molybdenum using two titanium base fillers
Lin, Chia-Chen,Lee, Cheng-Han,Shiue, Ren-Kae,Shy, Hsiou-Jeng Techno-Press 2012 Advances in materials research Vol.1 No.3
Brazing Mo using Ti and Ti-15-3 foils has been investigated in the experiment. For traditional furnace brazing, solidification shrinkage voids cannot be completely removed from the joint even the brazing temperature increased to 2013 K and 160 ${\mu}m$ thick Ti foil applied in brazing. Similar results are observed from the joint using Ti-15-3 filler. In contrast, the quality of laser brazed joint is much better than that of furnace brazed joint. A sound joint is achieved after laser brazing. Tensile strengths of 418 and 373 MPa are obtained from laser brazed joints at the power of 800W and travel speed of 5 mm/s using Ti and Ti-15-3 fillers, respectively. All laser brazed joints are fractured at the brazed zone and cleavage dominated fractures are widely observed from their fractographs. The Ti base fillers show potential in laser brazing Mo substrate.
