Buckwheat Polysaccharide Exerts Antiproliferative Effects in THP-1 Human Leukemia Cells by Inducing Differentiation

        She-Ching Wu,Bao-Hong Lee 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.1

Buckwheat is a healthy food commonly eaten worldwide. The antitumor activity of buckwheat polysaccharides (BWPSs) has not yet been evaluated. In recent years, inducing differentiation of leukemic cells has become one of the most important therapeutic approaches for curing leukemia, and this strategy effectively inhibits leukemia cell proliferation and growth because the differentiation inducer changes leukemic cell morphology and cellular characters by inducing cellular maturity. The ability of BWPS to induce the differentiation of human leukemic THP-1 cells (monocyte [MNC]/macrophage-like cells) was investigated by both direct and indirect treatments in this study. In the indirect treatment, BWPS significantly stimulated cytokine secretion (differentiation inducer) in MNCs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells in MNC-conditioned medium (BWPS-MNC-CM) following a 24-hour treatment, and THP-1 cell differentiation and maturity were significantly increased after 5 days of treatment with the BWPS-MNC-CM. On the other hand, BWPS directly induced THP-1 cell differentiation and maturity following 3-day and 5-day treatments in a dose-dependent manner and exerted phagocytic activity and superoxide anion production in these mature cells. These findings indicate that BWPS has potential for differentiation therapy in leukemia.

Activity and stability of Pd/MMnOx (M = Co, Ni, Fe and Cu) supported on cordierite as CO oxidation catalysts

        Qiong Huang,Shu-Bao Shen,Xiaokang Yan,Bing Li,Xiaoliang Xu,Ying-Wen Chen,She-Min Zhu 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.2

Several catalysts of the general formula, MMnOx (M = Co, Ni, Fe and Cu), were synthesised through the impregnation method; their activities were shown to be enhanced by the addition of a small amount of Pd (0.01–0.1 wt%). These catalysts exhibit different activities for the catalytic oxidation of CO, due to the different valence states of various transition metal oxides. The introduction of Pd prominently enhanced both the reduction and oxidation capabilities of the catalysts. These catalysts were optimised for oxidation activities by designing orthogonal experiments. Based upon the catalysts’ properties, the stability of these samples and their ability to resist steam over Pd/CoMnOx/cordierite were investigated.

Effects of Gal-13 on the Content of Immunoglobulin, Proliferation of Lymphocyte and Antibody Titers after Vaccination with Infectious Bursal Disease Virus Vaccine in Chickens

        Yang, Yurong,Jiang, Yibao,She, Ruiping,Peng, Kaisong,Zhou, Xuemei,Yin, Qingqiang,Wang, Decheng,Liu, Tianlong,Bao, Huihui Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.3

Gal-13 is an antimicrobial peptide isolated from chicken intestine. Ninety chickens were randomly divided into two groups (45 chickens for each group) to determine the effect of oral administration of Gal-13 on the acquired immune response. The chickens in the first group were fed a diet without Gal-13 as the control, and the chickens in the second group were fed the same diet, except that Gal-13 ($1{\mu}g/ml$) was suspended in drinking water just after hatching. Samples of blood, thymus, bursa of fabricius and spleen were taken at day 1, 4, 7, 10 and 17. The chickens in both groups received infectious bursal disease virus vaccine at day 20, and then sera samples were collected for analysis at 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after vaccination. The results showed: (1) Gal-13 could enhance the content of immunoglobulin (Ig)G at the age of 4 to10 days (p<0.05) and IgM at the age of 4 and 10 days (p<0.05) in the serum; (2) In vitro experiments showed that Gal-13 (0.625-1.250${\mu}g/ml$) enhanced the proliferation of peripheral blood lymphocytes of the chickens stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and concanavlin A (ConA). Compared to the control, Gal-13 (1 ${\mu}g/ml$) enhanced the proliferation of bursa lymphocytes at 17 days of age (p<0.01) and thymus lymphocytes at 7 days of age (p<0.01), but restrained lymphocyte proliferation in chicken spleen and differed significantly at day 10 (p<0.01); (3) Gal-13 enhanced infectious bursal disease virus antibody in sera of chickens 21 days after infectious bursal disease virus vaccine administration (p<0.05). These results suggested that Gal-13 could modulate adaptive immune responses of chickens.

Catalytic performance of LaCo0.5M0.5O3 (M = Mn, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu) perovskite-type oxides and LaCo0.5Mn0.5O3 supported on cordierite for CO oxidation

        Xiaokang Yan,Shu-Bao Shen,Qiong Huang,Bing Li,Xiaoliang Xu,Ying-Wen Chen,She-Min Zhu 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.2

Catalytic combustion of CO over perovskite-type oxides LaCo0.5M0.5O3 (M = Mn, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu) and LaCo0.5Mn0.5O3 supported on cordierite were investigated. The catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method with citrate and characterized by XRD, SEM and TPR. The LaCo0.5Mn0.5O3catalyst showed much higher activity in CO oxidation compared with LaCo0.5M0.5O3 (M = Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu)due to different kinds of valence state and lattice oxygen content. When LaCo0.5Mn0.5O3 was supported on cordierite, the activity was improved significantly. However, calcining temperature and the presence of water vapor affected the catalytic activity due to sintering and competition of H2O with CO for adsorption, respectively.

Anti-adherence of Antibacterial Peptides and Oligosaccharides and Promotion of Growth and Disease Resistance in Tilapia

        Peng, K.S.,She, R.P.,Yang, Y.R.,Zhou, X.M.,Liu, W.,Wu, J.,Bao, H.H.,Liu, T.L. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.4

Four hundred and fifty tilapias ($6.77{\pm}0.23$ g) were assigned randomly to six groups to evaluate the feasibility of the tested antibacterial peptides (ABPs) and oligosaccharides as substitutes for antibiotics. The control group was fed with a commercial tilapia diet; other five groups were fed with the same commercial diet supplemented with konjac glucomannan (KGLM), cluster bean galactomannan (CBGAM), and three animal intestinal ABPs derived from chicken, pig and rabbit at 100 mg/kg respectively. After 21 days of feeding, growth, disease resistance, and in vivo anti-adherence were determined. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of tested agents on adhesion of Aeromonas veronii biovar sobria (A.vbs) strain BJCP-5 to tilapia enteric epithelia in vitro was assessed by cell-ELISA system. As a result, the tested agents supplemented at 100 mg/kg show significant benefit to tilapia growth and disease resistance (p<0.05), and the benefit may be correlated with their interfering in the contact of bacteria with host mucosal surface. Although none of the tested agents did inhibit the growth of BJCP-5 in tryptic soy broth at $100{\mu}g/ml$, all of them did inhibit the adhesion of A.vbs to tilapia enteric epithelia in vivo and in vitro. In vitro mimic assays show that three ABPs at low concentrations of $25{\mu}g/ml$ and $2.5{\mu}g/ml$ have the reciprocal dose-dependent anti-adherence effect. The inhibition of ABPs may be correlated with a cation bridging and/or receptor-ligand binding, but not with hydrophobicity. The KGLM and CBGAM inhibited the adherence of BJCP-5 to tilapia enteric epithelia with dose-dependent manner in vitro, and this may be through altering bacterial hydrophobicity and interfering with receptor-ligand binding. Our results indicate that the anti-adherence of the tested ABPs and oligosaccharides may be one of the mechanisms in promoting tilapia growth and resistance to A.vbs.

A novel catalyst of Ni–Mn complex oxides supported on cordierite for catalytic oxidation of toluene at low temperature

        Qiong Huang,Zhi-Yuan Zhang,Wen-Jiao Ma,Ying-Wen Chen,She-Min Zhu,Shu-Bao Shen 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.2

The catalytic combustion of toluene over Ni–Mn mixed complex supported on industrial cordierite was investigated. The catalysts were prepared by the wet impregnation method and characterized by using the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD),Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The catalytic activity toward the complete oxidation of toluene to CO2 and H2O strongly depended on the molar ratio of Ni/Mn, loading amount of Ni–Mn oxides, and calcination temperature. All the results above indicated that the Ni–Mn complex oxide catalyst calcined at 400 8C with 0.5 mol ratio of Ni/Mn, 10 wt.% loading amounts, and showed the highest activity as complete oxidation of toluene.

Bismuth-Doped Phosphate Glasses and H+-Implanted Waveguides

        Jie Zhang,Jing-Yi Chen,Chun-Xiao Liu,Liao-Lin Zhang,She-Bao Lin 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.76 No.6

The work reports on the preparation and optical characterization of 75P2O5-15B2O3-9Al2O3-Bi2O3 glass by using the melt-quenching method and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. Further, 0.4-MeV proton implantation of a fluence of 8.0 × 10^{16} ions/cm^2 was carried out on this glassy sample and it was tested as a waveguide at a wavelength of 632.8 nm for the first time to our knowledge. The m-line curves of the waveguide were measured before and after successive annealing treatments. The formation theory of the planar waveguides is discussed through simulations of the energy loss distribution and analysis of the reconstructed refractive index profile. The results should be useful in the design and fabrication of bismuth-doped phosphate glass and its use in integrated photonics devices.

Optical Properties of K9 Glass Waveguides Fabricated by Using Carbon-Ion Implantation

        Chun-Xiao Liu,Wei Wei,Li-Li Fu,Xu-Feng Zhu,Hai-Tao Guo,Wei-Nan Li,She-Bao Lin 한국물리학회 2016 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.69 No.2

K9 glass is a material with promising properties that make it attractive for optical devices. Ion implantation is a powerful technique to form waveguides with controllable depth and refractive index profile. In this work, optical planar waveguide structures were fabricated in K9 glasses by using 6.0-MeV C3+-ion implantation with a fluence of 1.0 × 1015 ions/cm2. The effective refractive indices of the guided modes were measured by using a prism-coupling system. The refractive index change in the ion-irradiated region was simulated by using the intensity calculation method. The modal intensity profile of the waveguide was calculated and measured by using the finite difference beam propagation method and the end-face coupling technique, respectively. The transmission spectra before and after the implantation showed that the main absorption band was not influenced by the low fluence dopants. The optical properties of the carbon-implanted K9 glass waveguides show promise for use as integrated photonic devices.
