Lung cancer is the most common cause of death from cancer worldwide, and its incidence is increasing in East Asian and Western countries. To identify genetic factors that modify the risk of lung adenocarcinoma, we conducted a genome-wide association study in a Japanese cohort, with replication in two independent studies in Japanese and Korean individuals, in a total of 2,098 lung adenocarcinoma cases and 11,048 controls. The combined analyses identified two susceptibility loci for lung adenocarcinoma: TERT (rs2736100, combined P = 2.91 ? 10<SUP>??11</SUP>, odds ratio (OR) = 1.27) and TP63 (rs10937405, combined P = 7.26 ? 10<SUP>??12</SUP>, OR = 1.31). Fine mapping of the region containing TP63 showed that a SNP (rs4488809) in intron 1 of TP63 showed the most significant association. Our results suggest that genetic variation in TP63 may influence susceptibility to lung adenocarcinoma in East Asian populations.
日本の高校生の異文化間能力育成のための理論的考察 : 韓国語 · 韓国文化学習の観点から

This study explores the goal of Korean language and culture learning in Japanese highschool in terms of 'Intercultural Competence.' In other words, preparing for the situation that problems occur when meeting someone who has different cultural background, it explores the concept of the competence theoretically and attempts to organize the ways to apply the competence into education so that students can realize the existence of the stereotypes toward other cultures and various perspectives including their own. Specifically, after reviewing the concept of the Intercultural Competence proposed by Byram(1997) and the curriculums used in several countries to deal with the competence in the schools, it is investigated how they can apply the competence in the context that Japanese highschool students learn Korean language and culture. Focusing on the pre-training for an exchange between Japanese and Korean highschool students, especially, the types, the themes, and the examples of activities are proposed. It might not be that simple for students to relativize their own cultural perspectives. It would be significant, however, for highschool students, who have not advanced into society yet, to learn about various perspectives in the ways proposed in this study. 본고에서는 일본 고등학교에서 이루어지고 있는 한국어 및 한국 문화 학습의 목표를 이문화간 능력(Intercultural Competence)의 관점해서 살펴봤다. 즉 타문화(他文化)를 가진 사람들과의 교류에서 일어날 만한 갈등 상황에 대비하여, 타문화에 관한 고정관념에 대한 자각뿐만 아니라 자문화(自文化)의 관점을 포함한 다양한 관점을 인지하며 활용할 수 있도록 하기 위한 이론적 고찰과 교육에 대한 적용을 시도해 봤다. 구체적으로, Byram(1997)이 제시한 '이문화간 능력'의 개념과 이 능력에 해당되는 능력의 육성을 지향한 각국의 교육 과정 및 교육 자료를 참조하며 이론적으로 살펴본 후, 이를 일본 고등학생의 한국어 및 한국 문화 학습의 맥락으로 적용하는 방안을 모색해 봤다. 특히, 한일 고등학생 교류의 사전 교육을 염두에 두고 활동 유형, 주제를 설정한 후, 갈등 상황이 담긴 활동의 예를 제시하였다. 물론 자문화의 관점을 상대화 하기란 그렇게 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 아직 본격적인 사회 진출을 하지 않은 고등학교 시절에 이와 같이 여러 관점에 대한 학습을 하는 것은 매우 의의가 있는 일이라 본다.

Mandibular bone depression, also known as Stafne bone cavity, is defined as a bone depression filled mainly with salivary gland tissue. Parotid gland bone defects are infrequently observed. We report the case of a 52-yearold male patient who underwent radiographic examinations due to temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and a radiolucent area was detected in the mandibular ramus, with a provisional diagnosis of traumatic bone cyst or parotid mandibular bone defect. The patient was then referred for magnetic resonance imaging, which demonstrated a hyperintense area eroding the mandibular ramus, which corresponded to glandular tissue. Although the defect was a benign lesion, radiolucencies in the mandibular ramus lead to concerns among professionals, because their radiographic features can resemble various intrabony neoplastic lesions, such as giant cell tumors or benign tumors of the parotid gland.
Perspective of Small-Molecule AdipoR Agonist for Type 2 Diabetes and Short Life in Obesity

Obesity associated with unhealthy diet and lack of exercise is shown to contribute to the onset and/or aggravation of the metabolic syndrome and diabetes, thus placing affected individuals at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Plasma adiponectin levels are decreased in obesity, which causes insulin resistance and diabetes. Therefore, we identified adiponectin receptors (AdipoRs) as the therapeutic target. It was suggested that, similarly to caloric restriction and exercise, activation of the AdipoRs may have the potential not only to improve lifestyle-related diseases but to contribute to prolonged the shortened lifespan on a high caloric unhealthy diet. To this end, we have identified “AdipoRon” as an adiponectin receptor agonist. Indeed, AdipoRon ameliorated diabetes associated with obesity as well as to increase exercise endurance, thus prolonging shortened lifespan of obese mice fed on a high fat diet. Additionally, we have recently determined the crystal structures of the human AdipoRs. The seven-transmembrane helices of AdipoRs are structurally distinct from those of G-protein coupled receptors. It is expected that these findings will contribute not only to the elucidation of the AdipoR-related signal transduction but to the development and optimization of AdipoR-targeted therapeutics for obesity-related diseases such as diabetes.

This study explored which type of explicit instruction (explicit-deductive or explicit-inductive) was more effective for Japanese EFL learners across different proficiency levels and examined the role of language analytic ability (LAA) in L2 proficiency and learning outcomes. This study also investigated how individual differences in LAA mediated the effects of these two types of explicit instructional approaches. The participants were 82 late learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). They completed a subtest of an aptitude test and a form-focused sentence correction test to measure their resulting performance. The results indicated that explicit-deductive grammar instruction might be more beneficial than explicit-inductive instruction for Japanese EFL learners with low proficiency. LAA had a positive effect on L2 proficiency, but the effects of individual differences in LAA on instructional outcomes were neutralised by more structured explicit grammar instruction in the case of Japanese EFL learners. Follow-up analyses showed that the interaction effect of LAA with explicit-deductive instruction was significant in the low-LAA group. This study highlights the importance of considering the interaction among LAA, language proficiency, and instructional conditions in the design of the most effective learning activities in Japanese EFL classrooms.
