Chromium doped sapphire (Ruby) films have been fabricated on Si substrate by laser ablation, and their fundamental optical property and thermal characteristics are evaluated for temperature sensor application. The red emission near 700 nm which originates from 3d transition in Cr3+ ions was clearly observed from the Ruby films. The split of PL peak, originated in 3d-orbital of chromium ion, is also clearly observed from Ruby films. Temperature dependence of PL spectrum from ruby films was measured under Ar laser excitation. PL intensity and PL peak positiongreatly vary with temperature ranging from 293 K to 443 K. To take the advantage of this phenomenon, the temperature sensor with calibration free can be developed.

Hiroaki Aizawa,Hiroaki Ishizawa,Eiji Toba 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
This paper describes an optrode sensor for chemical and physical measurement and its application to industrial examinations. Among many king of optrode sensors, we have fabricated a temperature, oxygen and pH sensor and characteristics of which was experimentally investigated. Our experimental data shows the optrode sensor for chemical and physical measurement has singular capability as compared with a conventional sensor such as an electrode sensor.

Yukari Miyazaki,Hiroaki Aizawa,Toru Katsumata,Shuji Komuro 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
A possibility of low temperature measurement using fluorescence thermometry was examined. Temperature dependence of fluorescence lifetime applied to low temperature measurement. Chromium ion doped sapphire crystal (ruby) is known as a suitable sensor material for temperature measurement. Fluorescence thermometer using the ruby which is modified for temperature measurement has been fabricated. From this research, ruby crystal is found to be useful as the sensor head for fluorescence thermometer. In addition, the ruby crystal is potentially useful material for the sensor head crystals to measure low temperature below 273 K.

Toru Katsumata,Hiroaki Aizawa,Shuji Komuro 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8
Phosphor materials, such as Cr doped spinel (MgAl2O4), garnet (Y3Al5O12) and sapphire (Al2O3) crystals and composites of these materials are developed for a highly sensitive thermo-sensor in fluorescence thermometer excited using LED. Temperature dependences of photoluminescence (PL) intensity from these materials are evaluated using LED excitation. PL intensity from sensor materials decreases linearly with temperature. Impurities doped sapphire, spinel, garnet crystals and their composites are found to be suitable materials as sensor materials for fluorescence thermometer using LED excitation. Yellow colored LED is found to be useful excitation light for Cr doped sensor materials. All the materials examined in this paper can be effectively excited using a yellow colored LED.
