        A Critical Look at the Multimodal Pragmatic Approach to Translation

        번역은 일종의 다중기호체계를 이용한 의사소통이다. 다중기호체계는 번역과정과 번역텍스트에서 점점 더 중요하게 고려되고 있다. 번역 영역에서 다중기호 텍스트의 등장과 더불어, Dicerto (2018)는 다중기호 원본텍스트 (source text) 분석을 위한 다중기호적 화용분석 모델을 제시했다. 다중기호체계 연구(multimodal studies)와 번역연구 분야에 화용 이론을 응용함으로써 언어적, 비언어적 다중기호(언어, 음향, 시각 기호)들의 해석을 보편적 원리로 설명하려 하였다. 이 다중기호적 화용분석 모델은 다학문적 연구가 가지는 장점을 통해 번역 분석을 이론적으로, 체계적으로 설명할 수 있는 모델이다. 본 연구에서는 Dicerto의 모델이 가지는 장단점을 실제 텍스트, 즉 정적 다중기호 텍스트 (static multimodal text) 뿐만 아니라, 동적 다중기호 텍스트 (dynamic multimodal text)에도 적용해 봄으로써 그 적용가능성을 살펴본 후, 그 번역모델의 한계점과 문제를 적시하고, 이를 해결하기 위한 모델의 확장 필요성과 가능성을 논의한다. Translation is a kind of multimodal communication. Its multimodality is getting more significant in the translation process and translation texts. With the rise of multimodal texts in translation landscape, Dicerto (2018) proposes a multimodal pragmatic (MP) model for the analysis of multimodal source texts in translation. However, a critical look at her MP model shows that, for all of its multi-disciplinary advantages, it limits its theoretical applications to only target texts, and static multimodal texts; it does not pay attentions on various relations between source and target texts, and dynamic multimodal texts. In line with such limitations, we apply the model to a dynamic pragmatic example, and suggest some modifications to get over such limitations.

        A Modified Multimodal Pragmatic Model for Translation Analysis

        번역학 영역에서 다중기호 텍스트의 급증으로 새로운 연구방법과 다중기호 분석 모델이 제시되어 왔다. 그 중 Dicerto (2018)는 다중 기호적 화용분석 모델을 제시하여, 다중기호학과 번역연구 분야에 화용이론을 응용하는 다학문적 시도를 하였다. 하지만, 이론적 약점과, 동적 다중기호 텍스트 분석의 문제점이 Jiang & Lee (2020)에서 제기되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 Dicerto 모델이 가진 문제를 해결하기 위한 수정 모델을 제시하는 것이다. 수정 모델은 적절성 이론의 interpretive resemblance 역할을 강화시키고, 다중 기호간 관계는 단순화시킴으로써, 번역 분석의 설명력을 확장시키고 있다. 이에 대한 검증을 위해 영화 Shadow의 한 장면, 즉 동적 텍스트에 적접 적용하여, 효과적인 번역분석의 장점을 논의한다. The multimodal trend in the translation landscape have required new approaches and multimodal models to be proposed for the translation studies. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new multimodal pragmatic model, modifying Dicerto’s model to solve its problems for the translation of dynamic multimodal texts. This new modified multimodal pragmatic model strengthens the role of interpretive resemblance, but simplifies the cross-modal relations: the model enables translation to be studied and assessed comparatively. We demonstrated how the model works successfully, by applying it to a subtitled scene picked up from the movie ‘Shadow’ (2018). We expect it to contribute to multimodal studies and pragmatic approaches to translation.

        Sesquiterpenoids from Farfugium japonicum and Their Inhibitory Activity on NO Production in RAW264.7 Cells

        A new eremophilane sesquiterpenoid, namely, 3β-angeloyloxy-6β,8β-dihydroxy-9β-senecioyloxyeremophil-7(11)-en-12,8α-lactone, along with eight known sesquiterpenoids, was isolated from the rhizome of Farfugium japonicum. The structures of all isolates were identified based on analyses of spectroscopic data (HRESIMS, IR, 1D, and 2D NMR) and comparison with literature data. The inhibitory effects of compounds 1-4 on nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccaride-activated mouse macrophages were also evaluated.

        Biodegradable organosilica-based targeted and redox-responsive delivery system of resveratrol for efficiently alleviating ulcerative colitis

        Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by a low redox potential in the colon. Targeting redox-responsivestrategies are highly desirable due to the capacity of improving the treatment efficiency of drugs againstUC. Resveratrol (Res), a natural ingredient, possesses prominent anti-inflammatory activity. However, thelimited bioavailability and poor water-solubility severely hinder its clinical translation. Herein, we fabricatean oral delivery carrier of Res-encapsulated tetrasulfide-containing organosilica nanoparticles(DSMSNs), functionalized by targeting component chondroitin sulfate (CS). Benefiting from smart‘‘switch” and targeted ‘‘guider”, CS shell enables high internalization and promotes selective accumulationin colon epithelial cells and macrophages through CD44-mediated pathway; meanwhile, glutathione(GSH) response-mediated rapid disassembly exhibits targeted Res release and efficient biodegradation,consequently achieving enhanced intracellular delivery of Res, improved Res-enabled treatment andrecovered gut microbial diversity in the colitis model to mitigate colonic inflammation. These findingsthus bring fresh insights into the potential of MONs in UC treatment as an oral delivery platform.

        Analysis of Active Components and Proteomics of Chinese Wild Rice (Zizania latifolia (Griseb) Turcz) and Indica Rice (Nagina22)

        The ancient Chinese wild rice (Zizania latifolia (Griseb) Turcz) (CWR) has valuable biological and medicinal functions. To assess the advantages lost in modern cultivated rice after domestication, we compared the composition of bioactive compounds and the results of proteomic analysis with those of Indica rice (N22). We used routine methods to determine the protein, total dietary fiber, amino acid, mineral substance, plant secondary metabolites, and amino acid composition of CWR and N22. The protein and mineral contents of CWR were two times that of N22, and the levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium, chromium, iron, and zinc were significantly higher than those of N22 (P < .05). There was ~7.6 times more dietary fiber in CWR than in N22, but fewer carbohydrates (P < .05). Anthocyanins and chlorophyll were detected in CWR, but were absent from N22. Compared with N22, CWR had 53, 19, and 5.4 times higher (P < .05) levels of saponins, flavonoids, and plant sterols, respectively. The amino acid score of CWR was 66.6, which was significantly higher than N22. Sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) indicated that the main seed proteins of CWR were glutelins, including both acid and alkaline subunits, which were approximately twice those of N22. To investigate the differences in protein profiles between CWR and N22, we conducted two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) analysis of the total proteins in the seeds of the two rice species. 2-DE gels revealed 19 differentially expressed proteins. Information obtained from peptide mass fingerprinting indicates that glutelin precursor caffeoyl coenzyme A (CoA) O-methyltransferase and putative bithoraxoid-like protein can provide good gene sources for improving rice quality.

        MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous non-coding genes that participate in post-transcription regulation by either degrading mRNA or blocking its translation. It is considered to be very important in regulating insect development and metamorphosis. Insects are the largest group of animals and are extremely valuable in biological and agriculture research. Insects are also important pests to human health and agriculture, and efforts are necessary protect both humans and plants from disease and damage. Despite their importance, insects lag behind mammals, nematodes, and plants in miRNA research. At present, only 279 insect miRNAs have been identified from Drosophila melanogaster, Anopheles gambiae, Apis mellifera, Bombyx mori, and D. pseudoobscura in miRBase, and most of these miRNAs were computationally predicted without experimental validation. Functional analysis of insect miRNAs has only been conducted in D. melanogaster.

        Prestressed concrete bridges with corrugated steel webs: Nonlinear analysis and experimental investigation

        Concrete bridges with corrugated steel webs and prestressed by both internal and external tendons have emerged as one of the promising bridge forms. In view of the different behaviour of components and the large shear deformation of webs with negligible flexural stiffness, the assumption that plane sections remain plane may no longer be valid, and therefore the classical Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam models may not be applicable. In the design of this type of bridges, both the ultimate load and ductility should be examined, which requires the estimation of full-range behaviour. An analytical sandwich beam model and its corresponding beam finite element model for geometric and material nonlinear analysis are developed for this type of bridges considering the diaphragm effects. Different rotations are assigned to the flanges and corrugated steel webs to describe the displacements. The model accounts for the interaction between the axial and flexural deformations of the beam, and uses the actual stress-strain curves of materials considering their stress path-dependence. With a nonlinear kinematical theory, complete description of the nonlinear interaction between the external tendons and the beam is obtained. The numerical model proposed is verified by experiments.

      • Overexpression and Clinicopathological Contribution of DcR3 in Bladder Urothelial Carcinoma Tissues

        Background: To explore the expression of DcR3 protein and its clinicopathological significance in bladder urothelial carcinomas (BUC). Materials and Methods: Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect the expression of DcR3, caspase-3, Bcl-2, VEGF, Ki-67, PCNA and P53 in 166 BUC and 56 normal bladder tissues. Western blotting was used to detect the expression of DcR3 in the supernatants of cultured BUC cells. Results: Overexpression of DcR3 was found in BUC tissues and cell lines, with significant elevation as compared to normal bladder tissues (p<0.0001). Higher DcR3 expression was related to the status of invasion, lymph node metastasis and recurrence. Furthermore, DcR3 expression was negatively correlated with caspase-3 and positively associated with Bcl-2, VEGF, Ki-67 labeling index (LI), PCNA LI and P53 (all p<0.0001), respectively. Conclusions: DcR3 may play a crucial role as an oncogene in tumorigenesis, deterioration and progress of BUC via influencing related pathways of apoptosis, proliferation and angiogenesis. The detection of DcR3 protein in the formalinfixed and paraffin-embedded samples could assist to predict in prognosis of BUC patients.
