Review of Domestic and Foreign Legal Status and Issues of Conscientious Objection to Abortion

2019 Asia Pacific Journal of Health Law & Ethics Vol.12 No.3

In accordance with Article 15 of the Medical Service Act , medical personnel or a founder of a medical institution may not, upon receiving a request for medical treatment or assistance in childbirth, refuse to render his/her service without ‘any justifiable ground’in Korea. However, conscientious objection to abortion became a hot topic, as gynecologists who were unable to perform abortion in accordance with their religious and conscientious beliefs asked to recognize their right to veto after the Constitutional Court ruling on the punishment for abortion. It is forbidden to arbitrarily deny a medical provider a medical act. but conscientious and religious freedom of all people should be guaranteed. So it is also necessary to discuss the appropriateness of the range of conscientious objection for specific medical practices. As a based from the data, this paper summarizes the current status of the United States, Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Canada, which guarantee the conscientious objection of medical providers to abortion in the form of medical law, special law and guidelines. And through this work, we have drawn up issues that require social consensus for domestic legalization. We hope that the discussion on conscientious objection to the realization of the rights of both the patient and the health care provider will be initiated through social consensus on these issues.

One in the Same? Unpacking Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ESG in South Korea

        Hannah Jun(Hannah Jun) 한국학술연구원 2023 Korea Observer Vol.54 No.1

Substantial growth in global ESG investments has led to calls to better understand regional trends. To this end, this paper provides three major contributions with respect to the Korean market. First, it provides a comprehensive overview of the local ESG landscape. While drivers include aggressive ESG allocation and disclosure requirements, initial growth may have been propelled by a relabeling of existing investments rather than channeling of new capital. Second, this study unpacks ESG and corporate social responsibility (CSR) as presented in the literature. While prior studies have often used ESG and CSR interchangeably, clearer distinctions between the two terms may be called for. Third, this paper inves tigates ESG and CSR in South Korea through unique news data analysis of 88,946 articles. Unlike the academic literature to date, we see clearer distinctions between ESG and CSR via news analysis. Specifically, related terms for ESG focus on corporate governance and investors, while CSR retains a focus on social contribution and social responsibility.

      • Developing EFL students' writing skills through a genre-based strategy

Vol.2 No.1

Korean students of English as a foreign language (EFL) may find it particularly difficult to write academic papers due to the country's emphasis on traditional classroom instruction. Proficiency in academic writing requires students to have a deep comprehension of genre variance and to become experts in genre expertise. The purpose of this study was to investigate how genre-based training affected EFL students' academic writing performance. This study specifically aims to ascertain if students who study academic writing using genre-based education increase both their writing performance and their sense of genre. 56 Korean undergraduate students participated in the study. Four research tools were employed in total: semi-structured interviews, student writing, student reflection, and pretest and posttest. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the writing scores of the students. Using an independent-sample design, a t-test was run to analyze the mean differences between the two groups that received various kinds of teaching. Through student comments and interviews, the awareness of genres and attitudes toward the learning process of the target students were investigated. On the basis of the findings of the pretest, this study came to the conclusion that the writing abilities of both the control group and the experimental group were comparable. The experimental group fared much better than the control group in every category of academic writing when compared to the control group. This was the case across the board. In addition, the data demonstrated that the students who were the focus of the study improved their understanding of the genre in four unique areas: textual aspects, audience awareness, purpose awareness, and permissible material. Additionally, they had a positive attitude with regard to instruction that was based on genre. In order to provide educators and practitioners with recommendations for incorporating genre-based training into writing education, the purpose of this study is to provide guidelines.

A Canonical Reconsideration of the Song at the Sea (Exod 15:1-21): The Song of Moses or the Song of Miriam?

2016 Canon&Culture Vol.10 No.1

A growing number of scholars working from a variety of critical assumptions endorse the idea that the Song at the Sea (Exod 15:1b-18), which is traditionally associated with Moses, should be attributed, instead, to Miriam. This article examines J. Gerald Janzen’s contribution supporting the Miriamic priority based on a canonical reading of the exodus narrative. A close reading of the relevant biblical texts, however, indicates that the final form of the exodus account affirms the Mosaic initiative of the song. The purported function of the analeptic כי in Exodus 15:19 does not hold up in the broader narrative scheme of Exodus 14-15, especially in light of Isaac Rabinowitz’s thesis of אז as a literary device in Exodus 15:1. The present author argues that the double-envelope structure (Exod 14:22//14:29; 15:1//21) created by the distinct literary features of Exodus 14:22-15:21 provides the interpretive framework for understanding the narrative dynamics of the events surrounding the Song at the Sea. Moreover, the divine ascriptions in the Song at the Sea (Exod 15:2), in contrast to the songs of Deborah and Hannah, evince that the present literary form of the Song at the Sea (Exod 15:1b-18) places the song first on Moses’s lips. A Canonical Reconsideration of the Song at the Sea (Exod 15:1-21)

2016 Canon&Culture Vol.10 No.1

Business Strategy for Pursuing Social Value for B-Corp Certified Social Enterprises: Oyori Asia Case Study Review

        Hannah Jun(전희경),Yunjeong Kim(김윤정) 한국경영학회 2021 Korea Business Review Vol.25 No.신년 특별호

In 2019, B Lab announced its annual honoree list of the top-performing B Corps in terms of global business impact. This included recognition for impact-driven businesses in the areas of environment, community, customers, workers and overall impact, or those that earned a score in the top 10% on the B Impact Assessment. Among high-profile honorees such as Patagonia Works, Ben and Jerry’s and The Body Shop was a little-known business from South Korea, Oyori Asia. Oyori Asia was recognized as a World Honoree as Best for Overall 2019 and Best for Community 2019, a remarkable distinction given that the locally-registered social enterprise had just received its B Corp certification earlier that year. In this case study, we examine the growing prominence of B Corps for social impact-driven firms around the world by using Oyori Asia as a focal point of analysis. Oyori Asia aspires to support economic independence of Asian women and create sustainable value through its global food business. The company maintains business operations in South Korea, Nepal and Thailand and offers job training and full-time employment opportunities to disadvantaged women. This case study employs a unique dataset through an in-depth interview with Oyori Asia’s CEO, Lee Ji-hye, and highlights the opportunities and challenges of both B Corp certification and the social enterprise designation system in South Korea.

Recent Innovations in Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) : The Role of “Socially Responsible Bonds” in Spurring Sustainable Development

Hannah Jun,Hyojin Kim,Songhee Han Institute for International Trade and Cooperation, 2018 Asian International Studies Review Vol.19 No.1

While it has become clear that the global community needs to utilize partnerships between the public and private sectors to achieve broader economic and development goals, there has been less discussion about the potential role of investors in shaping and participating in this movement. Part of this may be due to familiarity with traditional methods such as official development assistance (ODA) and relatively less understanding about recent innovations in socially responsible investing (SRI), including social impact bonds and development impact bonds. As economies like Korea have begun to show greater interest in harnessing various investment strategies to achieve broader social goals, we find it critical to better understand what financial tools are available within the context of encouraging sustainable development. As such, this paper highlights the potential role investors can play in contributing to broader social issues both at home and abroad through an examination of recent innovations in SRI – specifically, the category of so-called “socially responsible bonds.”

      • Virtual surgical planning and patient-specific implant design system for fractured orbital wall reconstruction

        Hannah Kim(김한나),Hyun A Kim(김현아),Tae-guen Son(손태근),Hyunchul Cho(조현철),Jerome Charton(샤통 제롬),Woo Shik Jeong(정우식),Jong Woo Choi(최종우),Youngjun Kim(김영준) 대한기계학회 2017 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2017 No.11

Orbital wall is the thinnest bone that surrounds eyeballs. When there is an external force to mid-upper face, it is blown out to protect the eye from the pressure. Orbital fracture is a common traumatic deformity, but it can cause not only functional problems, but also esthetical problems such as exophthalmos or enophthalmus, and diplopia. The surgeon corrects eyeball position by placing plates to the fractured sites, but limited intra-operative view and complex anatomy make it difficult. 3D surgical software systems have been used for seeming the patient safety and getting reliable outcomes. However, these are not specialized for the surgery and time-consuming manual works are needed frequently. Thus, we propose a virtual surgical planning and implant design system. We focus on increasing usability by automated functions and minimized user interaction. There are four main modules in the proposed system. First, 3D patient’s model is automatically reconstructed from CT data, and the next, the fractured region is detected and visualized by registration of both orbits. Based on the detected area, patient-specific implant is designed using template models. After the surgery, pre-and post-operative 3D models can be compared and analyzed by using synchronized dual view, measurement tools and visualization of the difference of both models. We performed visual inspection for 3D modeling and fractured detection. As a result, the orbital wall of 3D facial model is properly reconstructed without unnecessary holes and the detected regions include real fractured sites properly. The average processing time takes about 4 minutes. In comparison with conventional systems, ours covers most functions and has strengths for automated functions such as orbital wall segmentation and fracture detection. We expect that the automated and optimized functions can reduce pre-operation time and improved surgical outcomes can be derived by using patient-specific 3D printed implant.

        Hannah Reyno(한나),Jong-Sup Park(박종섭),Sung-Yong Kang(강성용),Young-Jong Kang(강영종) 한국산학기술학회 2015 한국산학기술학회논문지 Vol.16 No.2

This study investigates the stress concentration factor of a door opening of an offshore tubular steel tower. The tubular steel tower is subjected to eight (8) different load combinations which are deemed to be normal and abnormal operating cases for the ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. Analytical method using parametric equations and numerical method of finite element are used to analyze the stress components as well as any translations or rotations where the flow of stress is interfered with. A finite element program, ABAQUS, is used for the numerical method analysis. Trends of the stress concentration in the localized area near the opening are studied, and points of interest are defined for comparison among three different cases of tubular steel tower: without door and without reinforcement; without door opening and with reinforcement; and with door opening and with reinforcement. Findings are tabulated and shown in illustrative charts, and conclusions are made.
