The papermaking process for a reconstituted tobacco sheet (RECON) has been preferred more because of the various merits such as a wide range of Recon products with better quality. The screw press is one of the very important process in RECON making process which divides the mixed raw materials into the soluble material and the insoluble material and could greatly affect the productivity and product quality. In this study, the characteristics of the screw press process in a Recon making mill were evaluated for two different RECON products. Three different efficiency index were proposed for the more detailed analysis of the screw press process. The result showed that the difference in the raw material might result in the difference in the efficiency and the properties of the extracts and the filter cake, especially in the HWS. The washing technique which applied in this experiment showed the amount of residual HWS in the fiber portion were not much changed by the each steps of the screw press.

The application of RECON(Reconstituted tobacco sheet) and the ventilation technology has been considered as very useful methods for controlling the tar and nicotine deliveries in modern blended tobacco. In this study, the effects of RECON contents in simulated blends on the smoke delivery and burning temperature were evaluated in three different ventilation levels. The ventilation showed a great influence on the burning temperature and smoke deliveries. The nicotine, tar and CO deliveries was greatly reduced by the ventilation. The amount of RECON showed the minor impacts on the smoke delivery. In high ventilation level such as 85 % ventilation, there was no distinct change in smoke deliveries by the amount of RECON.

The morphological properties of various structure materials of domestic and foreign reconstituted tobacco products(RTP) were investigated by using the Bauer-McNett classifier and the image analyzer. The results of the fiber classification showed the fraction of the bigger size structure materials was larger in a domestic RTP than that in two foreign RTPs. In case of fine fraction, the domestic RTP had bigger fine fraction than two foreign RTPs. Images of each structure materials showed the scrap in the foreign RTPs kept the original shape which were rare in the domestic RTP fractions. Those results deduced that the raw materials in a foreign RTP process might be treated separately depending on the mechanical and morphological properties, which could reduce the amount of fine generation and increase the efficiency in raw material treatment.

The pulping process in a papermaking process for a reconstituted tobacco sheet (RECON) was evaluated. For the practical information, the experiments were conducted in a real mill. Two pulping conditions were chosen and changed depending on the feasibility, such as the pulping temperature and the properties of pulping water. The higher pulping temperature resulted in the easier dissolution of solubles from the raw materials. However, the efficiency of screw press process was decreased by the higher pulping temperature, which resulted in the reduction of the HWS and the concentration in the #1 screw press filtrate. The addition of SEL(Strong extracted liquor) to pulper affected the efficiency of dissolution and the final concentration of #1 screw press filtrate. Although the higher SEL resulted in the less dissolution of the solubles from the raw materials, the concentration of the #1 screw press filtrate was greatly increased by the higher addition of SEL, which could provide much better efficiency to the following evaporation process of the filtrate and could increase the whole productivity.

The pulp mold would be one of the promising environmental friendly materials as a substitute for the plastic material. In this study, the effects of process conditions of wet pulp mold manufacturing on the properties of the pulp mold were investigated with a pilot wet pulp mold simulator. The stock concentration, the vacuum forming pressure, the vacuum forming time and the couching condition were controlled for this experiment. The higher stock concentration, the higher vacuum forming pressure and the longer vacuum forming time resulted in the higher grammage of pulp mold samples. And the dryness of wet pulp mold sheet after the vacuum forming were also greatly affected by the process conditions. The higher number of couching process increased the higher dryness of pulp mold after couching process and the lower bulk of the pulp mold samples. Those results showed the grammage of the pulp mold made with the wet pulp mold manufacturing method were greatly influenced by the stock concentration and the vacuum forming pressure, which indicated the adequate control for the uniformity of stock concentration in the stock tank and the vacuum forming pressure of the wet pulp mold former would be the critical factors for the production of the uniform pulp mold products.

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the changes in handsheet structure by beating, wet pressing and the addition of wood flour spacer on the water absorption and the moisture absorption properties. The higher beating treatment of BKP resulted in the denser structure of handsheet samples, which leaded to the lower water and moisture absorption. The wet pressing showed the similar effects by reducing the bulk of handsheets. In case of the handsheet samples with similar bulk structure made of different beaten pulps, the severer beating treatment increased the water absorption and the moisture absorption. The addition of the wood flour spacer resulted in the higher bulk following the higher water and moisture adsorption. Since the water and the moisture absorption properties of paper products could greatly affect on not only the product quality but also the process runnability, the control of the water response of paper product has been considered as very important technology. The results of this study might be useful for control of water and moisture absorption properties of paper products.
