In inbound logistics, a careful vehicle routing planning is required to cope with inventory and quality problems arising when LCD manufacturing adopts a just-in-time (JIT) raw material delivery philosophy. Dynamic environments that disturb the system"s flexibility and robustness should be considered, such as regulation of stocks, distance of vendors, time limits of delivery, and changes of production plan. Before the generation of vehicle routing plan, however, other factors associated with the company"s policy such as the number of vehicles, time allowance of JIT, and inventory level should be considered. In this paper, multi-pass simulation as a kind of the rule-based approach was employed to determine the optimal values of these factors. And then using these values, vehicle routing plan was created by consideration of various constraints. The details of simulation algorithm and simulation results of the proposed method are presented and demonstrated through a case study.

Dynamic and flexible enterprise networks are essential components for a global industry. To cope with a dynamic environment, enterprises frequently collaborate with other enterprises in the different as well as in the same domains. Virtual enterprise (VE) is an innovative network model to support such enterprise collaborations. In VE, the success is largely dependent upon the selection of partners. Minimizing risk and maximizing trust are two most important factors to guarantee this success. In this paper, a new concept of risk and risk factors in the VE creation are proposed and described. Risk, as a kind of criteria for partner selection, is a partner’s uncertainty that causes negative effects on VE like cost, due date and so on. Since trust is based on the competency and reputation of potential partners, it cannot fully represent partners ’ intrinsic uncertainties. Thus, risk management becomes an essential issue for the partner selection process. Comparison between the risk management in VE and those in the project and the system managements is presented and discussed. A methodology for reducing risks caused from partner selection in VE is also discussed and suggested.

Despite the fact that inbound supply chain plays an important role in the entire supply chain, it has not been paid much attention compared with outbound supply chain. Furthermore, in order to manage inbound supply chain, quite different characteristics of inbound vs. outbound, environmental constraints, and production policy should be considered. In this paper, characteristics of inbound supply chain are discussed and a novel approach for managing inbound supply chain is proposed. The proposed approach generates a vehicle routing schedule to efficiently manage inbound supply chain considering the production plan and the manufacturing policy. Operating mechanism is also described and a simulation study is conducted to validate the proposed approach.

Supply chain management (SCM) is one of the most important issues in improving enterprises’ profitability. Generally, supply chain consists of three sub-chains, namely inbound, intercompany, and outbound; and many research works for the SCM have considered outbound supply chain as overall supply chain. However, inbound supply chain should be distinguished from the other supply chains at the various aspects. In this paper, peculiar features of inbound supply chain are described in contrast with outbound. Especially, to control the inventory level and generate the vehicle routes in inbound supply chain are more critical than the outbound case. Although inventory routing problems (IRPs) deal with these issues at the outbound supply chain, existing IRPs are not suitable to apply to inbound case because inbound case is more complicated by its intrinsic characteristics. Therefore, IRP for inbound supply chain is also investigated. Using these inbound supply chain’s characteristics, rule-based vehicle routing planning system for inbound supply chain is developed and the details of the proposed system are described via the case study.

Determination of appropriate number of vehicles is one of the most important issues in the logistics field, especially when the delivery quantity of each day is defined such as inbound supply chain. It mainly depends on the number of shipment, however, delivery job making policies also play an important role. This paper develops period-based delivery scheduling method, which makes delivery jobs with divided production plan by using various length of periods. To design vehicle route, many rules are employed, and the best job combination is selected in a given period. After integration of selected job combinations of each period, scheduling process is performed for a day’s vehicle schedule. Via the comparative analysis of vehicle schedules, which can be diverse due to the diversity of period length, suitable length of period can be determined in a given day, furthermore, appropriate number of vehicles is also decided. During the comparative analysis, various constraints are considered such as stock capacity, inventory holding cost, and vehicle hiring cost. Operation mechanism and details of proposed approach are described via the simulation study.
