Background : CD43 is a sialoglycoprotein that is highly expressed on most leukocytes, except on B lymphocytes and dendritic cells. CD43 has been reported to be involved in the adhesion and apoptosis of lymphocytes. Although the aberrant expression of CD43 antigen in non-lymphoid tissues has been reported, the expression of the CD43 antigen in gastrointestinal malignancies is not well studied. Here, we studied the expression of CD43 in colon adenocarcinoma using the anti-CD43 monoclonal antibody developed in our laboratory. Methods : Thirty patients who had undergone surgical resection for colorectal carcinoma were recruited. The expression of CD43 molecule was determined by analyzing the formalin-fixed, paraffinembedded specimens immunohistochemically using our newly developed anti-CD43 mAb (K06). The results obtained by the immunohistochemical analysis correlated to the clinicopathological parameters. Results : The expression of CD43 were found in 20 out of 30 colorectal carcinoma cases. The expression of CD43 antigen is higher in well differentiated adenocarcinomas than poorly or moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas. Conclusions : The new anti- CD43 mAb might be helpful for the detection of the expression of CD43 on colorectal carcinoma cells. Further studies are required to assess the relationship between the CD43 expression and the colorectal carcinogenesis.

Pentamethylenetetrazol, though an excellent drug for the provocation of epileptiform discharges, often causes untoward clinical seizures or status epilepticus. Various evaluations by many investigators have been made on the clinical significance of sleep EEG as a technique of the provocation before the use of pentamethylenetetrazol. The purpose of this study is to verify the clinical value of sleep tracing in the Korean cases of convulsive disorders as compared with the results reported by other investigators. Of the patients refered to Seoul National University Hospital EEG laboratory during the past 5 years, 1570 cases with clinical seizures were analysed. Their EEG tracings comprised: 1) Waking spontaneous EEG, 2) Spontaneous sleep EEG and 3) Drug induced sleep EEG. The percentages of EEG abnormalities by the above three methods were 50.1%, 58.8% and 63.5% respectively. The drug-induced sleep EEG showed a higher rate of the provocation were compared by each age brachet.: the younger age group revealed higher rate of abnormality by provocation. This result gives a significance to the clinical use of sleep EEG but the procedure has yet to be improved to show a higher rate of the provocation as recorded by Gibbs and Gibbs who had provided as much time as 3-4 hours for one tracing. Furthermore, it is necessary to investigate the provocation rates of sleep EEG of each subtypes of epileptic seizures including focal seizure disorders.
