The fracture of acrylic resin dentures is an unresolved problem in removable prosthodontics. This study was aimed to evaluate the repair-rates of the flexure strength, fracture toughness and deflection of repaired acrylic resins. The specimens were divided into 9 groups and tested under 3-point flexure system of U.T.M. The fractured specimens were repaired with heat-cured or cold-cured acrylic resin and re-tested. The following results were obtained, 1. In the heat cured repairs, flexure strength, fracture toughness and deflection were highly increased(P<0.01). 2. The flexure strength of the heat cured repairs was 83% of original strength and that of the cold cured repairs was between 55% and 67%. 3. The groups which have smooth, monomer-pretreated joint surface were increased in the flexure strength, fracture toughness and defletion. 4. The groups which were cured in 37℃ water or 37℃ water under air pressure were increased in the flexure strength, fracture toughness and deflection, but the air-cured groups were decreased.

Background : CD24, also referred to as the heat stable antigen in mice, is a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol-linked glycoprotein expressed by thymocytes, B cells, neutrophils and immature neuronal cells. It has been recently observed in a variety of human malignancy. Here, we demonstrated the expression of CD24 in gastric adenocarcinomas. Methods : A total of 40 gastric adenocarcinomas and 20 tubular adenomas were immunohistochemically examined for the expression of CD24 and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) proteins. The immunoreactivity of CD24 was semiquantitatively scored (0, 1+, 2+) and compared with clinicopathologic variables and MMP-2 expression in tumor cells. Results : CD24 was rarely expressed in normal gastric tissue and not expressed in tubular adenoma. In contrast, a moderate/strong expression (2+) of CD24 was observed in 25% of gastric adenocarcinomas, and 30% cases showed a weak CD24 staining (1+). Moreover, CD24 expression was significantly correlated with the depth of tumor invasion and MMP-2 expression. Conclusions : These results suggest that the aberrant expression of CD24 in gastric adenocarcinomas might be associated with tumor progression and invasiveness.

Background : CD43 is a sialoglycoprotein that is highly expressed on most leukocytes, except on B lymphocytes and dendritic cells. CD43 has been reported to be involved in the adhesion and apoptosis of lymphocytes. Although the aberrant expression of CD43 antigen in non-lymphoid tissues has been reported, the expression of the CD43 antigen in gastrointestinal malignancies is not well studied. Here, we studied the expression of CD43 in colon adenocarcinoma using the anti-CD43 monoclonal antibody developed in our laboratory. Methods : Thirty patients who had undergone surgical resection for colorectal carcinoma were recruited. The expression of CD43 molecule was determined by analyzing the formalin-fixed, paraffinembedded specimens immunohistochemically using our newly developed anti-CD43 mAb (K06). The results obtained by the immunohistochemical analysis correlated to the clinicopathological parameters. Results : The expression of CD43 were found in 20 out of 30 colorectal carcinoma cases. The expression of CD43 antigen is higher in well differentiated adenocarcinomas than poorly or moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas. Conclusions : The new anti- CD43 mAb might be helpful for the detection of the expression of CD43 on colorectal carcinoma cells. Further studies are required to assess the relationship between the CD43 expression and the colorectal carcinogenesis.
