        Jobless Recoveries and Skill-Biased Sectoral Shift

        This study first defines skill-biased sectoral shift using two stylized facts. Specifically, the shift features the service sector having more college workers and becoming more productive than the goods sector. Subsequently, this study develops a two-sector model in which the shift is incorporated via a sector-specific labor adjustment cost and a reallocation shock. Although the model generates a jobless recovery, its implications on unemployment duration are not entirely consistent with the data. Therefore, this study considers its sectoral theory as promising, but does not claim that such theory fully explains jobless recoveries, especially when the existence of many alternative explanations is considered.

        Modified Ginseng Extract Induces Apoptosis in HepG2 Cancer Cells by Blocking the CXCL8-Mediated Akt/Nuclear Factor- <tex> $ \kappa $</tex> B Signaling Pathway

        <P>The cytokine C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 8 (CXCL8) is produced in the tumor microenvironment and has an important role in cancer pathogenesis. CXCL8 activates the nuclear factor (NF)-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B signaling. However, the role of NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B inactivation in apoptosis induced by negative regulation of CXCL8 remains unclear. Here, we assessed the effects of MRGX on the transcriptional activity of NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B and the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-<TEX>$ \alpha $</TEX>-stimulated target genes in liver cancer cells. Furthermore, we found that modified regular ginseng extract (MRGX)-mediated inhibition of NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B signaling induced apoptosis. Importantly, MRGX exerted strong activity, inhibiting TNF-<TEX>$ \alpha $</TEX>-induced expression of Akt and NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, MRGX inhibited the TNF-<TEX>$ \alpha $</TEX>-induced expression of genes encoding CXCL8, CXCL1, inducible nitric oxide synthase and intercellular adhesion molecule 1. MRGX also dowregulated Akt activation, and there was a significant decrease in Akt activation in HepG2 cells treated with CXCL8 siRNA. Conversely, CXCL8 overexpression increased Akt activation in MRGX-treated HepG2 cells. When Akt was silenced, MRGX treatment of HepG2 cells overexpressing CXCL8 decreased nuclear translocation of NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B, whereas Akt overexpression increased nuclear translocation of NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B in MRGX-treated HepG2 cells. Moreover, MRGX negatively regulated the TNF-<TEX>$ \alpha $</TEX>-mediated I<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B/NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B pathway to promote Bax activation, resulting in caspase-3 activation and apoptosis. Taken together, these results indicated that MRGX inhibited CXCL8-mediated Akt/NF-<TEX>$ \kappa $</TEX>B signaling, which upregulated Bax activation and consequently induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells.</P>

        Effects of tax policy in a life-cycle model with asset illiquidity

        This study proposes a general equilibrium life-cycle model where households make labor supply decisions and smooth consumption using one asset. This asset involves a stochastic adjustment cost. A recession arises when the tax revenue generated from a tax hike is spent as government expenditures. A prolonged expansion occurs when the revenue is distributed as transfers, especially to older and lower income households with higher savings. The tax hike invariably leads to recession when the adjustment cost is absent. Thus, how tax revenue is spent can significantly affect the aggregate economy once asset illiquidity is considered.

        중국과 한국 공공기관의 인포그래픽 유형 비교 분석

        본 연구 목적은 빅데이터 시대 인포그래픽의 의미를 고찰하고, 중국과 한국의 공공기관 인포그래픽의 활용 현황과 표현방식을 비교 분석해 디자인 문제를 발견하고 개선 방향을 제시하는 것이다. 중국과 한국의 주요 업무가 같은 6개 공공기관이 홈페이지에 게시한 인포그래픽을 연구 대상으로 하였다. 연구 방법은 첫째, 국내외 정보디자인 관련 논문 및 문헌 자료에 대해 고찰하였다. 둘째, 설문 조사를 바탕으로 SPSS 통계패키지를 활용해 중국과 한국의 공공기관 인포그래픽 실증사례를 비교 분석하였다. 셋째, 우수한 디자인 사례를 분석해 중국과 한국 공공기관 인포그래픽 디자인의 장단점을 찾아냈다. 연구 결과는 공공기관과 인포그래픽의 관련성이 기관 기능과 정보의 성질을 근거로 그래픽, 색채, 서체, 레이아웃 등의 요소에 대한 디자인 배열을 통해 대중의 인지 본능을 유도하고 정보의 소통과 전달을 촉진한다. 분석 결과 중국과 한국의 공공기관 인포그래픽은 흡인력, 간결성, 탈문자화 측면에서 자체적인 미흡함이 있어 공공기관 인포그래픽의 디자인 원칙과 디자인 방법에 관한 연구가 필요하다. This study aims to evaluate the value of infographics in the era of big data, compare and analyze the current situation and presentation of infographics in public authorities in China and Korea, identify problems in the design of infographics in public authorities, and propose solutions. The infographics published on the official websites of six public authorities with the same main operations in China and Korea were used as the object of study. The research methodology is first, an exploration of domestic and international papers and literature materials related to information design. Secondly, a comparative analysis of empirical examples of infographics in Chinese and Korean public authorities was carried out using a questionnaire-based survey and SPSS statistical methods. Thirdly, the strengths and weaknesses of infographics design in Chinese and Korean public authorities were identified through the analysis of outstanding design works. The findings are that the relevance of public authorities to infographics is based on the functions of the authorities and the nature of the information and that the design and arrangement of graphics, colors, fonts, and typography are used to guide the cognitive instincts of the public and facilitate the communication and delivery of information. The findings of the survey indicate that the Chinese and Korean public authorities infographics are lacking in attractive, simple, and wordless with the public, and therefore research into the design principles and methods of public authorities infographics is necessary.

        Role of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Treating Children With Overactive Bladder From Pooled Analysis of 8 Randomized Controlled Trials

        Purpose: Transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS), as a non-invasive modality, has been clinically used as an alternative treatment for children with overactive bladder (OAB). We conducted a pooled analysis to explore the effect of TENS on OAB. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis guideline was followed in this study. The MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, as well as the reference lists of the retrieved studies, were used to find trials relevant for assessing the use of TENS to treat OAB. Results: Of the 246 records identified, 8 publications were analyzed in our study. Our analysis found that TENS resulted in a greater decrease of wet days/wk, daily voiding frequency, daily incontinence episodes, and daily number of voids than was observed in the control group. Furthermore, TENS-treated patients showed similar visual analogue scale (VAS) scores to patients in the control group, demonstrating that the application of TENS did not increase patients’ discomfort and pain. TENS had a relative advantage in the number of partial responses, but no clear differences were found in frequency of no response or a full response compared to the control group. In urodynamic testing, TENS led to obvious improvements in average voided volume and maximum voided volume in children with OAB. Conclusions: TENS had a remarkable effect on the improvement of urodynamic indexes and objective OAB symptoms without a significant increase in VAS scores for children with OAB.

        Differentiating Benign from Malignant Bone Tumors Using Fluid-Fluid Level Features on Magnetic Resonance Imaging

        Objective: To analyze different fluid-fluid level features between benign and malignant bone tumors on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods: This study was approved by the hospital ethics committee. We retrospectively analyzed 47 patients diagnosed with benign (n = 29) or malignant (n = 18) bone tumors demonstrated by biopsy/surgical resection and who showed the intratumoral fluid-fluid level on pre-surgical MRI. The maximum length of the largest fluid-fluid level and the ratio of the maximum length of the largest fluid-fluid level to the maximum length of a bone tumor in the sagittal plane were investigated for use in distinguishing benign from malignant tumors using the Mann-Whitney U-test and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Fluid-fluid level was categorized by quantity (multiple vs. single fluid-fluid level) and by T1-weighted image signal pattern (high/low, low/high, and undifferentiated), and the findings were compared between the benign and malignant groups using the χ2 test. Results: The ratio of the maximum length of the largest fluid-fluid level to the maximum length of bone tumors in the sagittal plane that allowed statistically significant differentiation between benign and malignant bone tumors had an area under the ROC curve of 0.758 (95% confidence interval, 0.616–0.899). A cutoff value of 41.5% (higher value suggests a benign tumor) had sensitivity of 73% and specificity of 83%. Conclusion: The ratio of the maximum length of the largest fluid-fluid level to the maximum length of a bone tumor in the sagittal plane may be useful to differentiate benign from malignant bone tumors.

      • Plasma Folate and Vitamin B <sub>12</sub> Levels in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        <P>Folate and vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> involved in the one-carbon metabolism may play a key role in carcinogenesis and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through influencing DNA integrity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association of plasma folate and vitamin B12 levels with HCC in a case-control study on 312 HCC patients and 325 cancer-free controls. Plasma concentrations of folate and vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> in all the subjects were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Meanwhile, the information of HCC patients’ clinical characteristics including tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage, tumor size and tumor markers were collected. The patients of HCC had significantly lower folate levels than those of controls; there was no significant difference in the mean of plasma vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> levels. We also observed an inverse association between the levels of plasma folate and HCC: the adjusted odds ratios (OR) (95% confidence intervals (CI)) of HCC from the highest to lowest quartile of folate were 0.30 (0.15–0.60), 0.33 (0.17–0.65), and 0.19 (0.09–0.38). Compared to the subjects in the lowest quartile of plasma vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB>, only the subjects in the highest quartile of vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> exhibited a significant positive relationship with HCC, the adjusted OR was 2.01 (95% CI, 1.02–3.98). HCC patients with Stage III and IV or bigger tumor size had lower folate and higher vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> levels. There was no significant difference in the mean plasma folate levels of the HCC cases in tumor markers status (AFP, CEA and CA19-9 levels), whereas patients with higher CEA or CA19-9 levels retained significantly more plasma vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> than those with normal-CEA or CA19-9 level. In conclusion, plasma folate and vitamin B<SUB>12</SUB> levels could be associated with HCC, and might be used as predictors of clinical characteristics of HCC patients. However, further prospective studies are essential to confirm the observed results.</P>
