        Opportunistic Relay Selection for Joint Decode-and-Forward Based Two-Way Relaying with Network Coding

        This paper investigates the capacity rate problems for a joint decode-and-forward (JDF) based two-way relaying with network coding. We first characterize the achievable rate region for a conventional three-node network scenario along with the calculation of the corresponding maximal sum-rate. Then, for the goal of maximizing the system sum-rate, opportunistic relay selection is examined for multi-relay networks. As a result, a novel strategy for the implementation of relay selection is proposed, which depends on the instantaneous channel state and allows a single best relay to help the two-way information exchange. The JDF scheme and the scheme using relay selection are analyzed in terms of outage probability, after which the corresponding exact expressions are developed over Rayleigh fading channels. For the purpose of comparison, outage probabilities of the amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme and those of the scheme using relay selection are also derived. Finally, simulation experiments are done and performance comparisons are conducted. The results verify that the proposed strategy is an appropriate method for the implementation of relay selection and can achieve significant performance gains in terms of outage probability regardless of the symmetry or asymmetry of the channels. Compared with the AF scheme and the scheme using relay selection, the conventional JDF scheme and that using relay selection perform well at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).

        Immobilization of ammonium and phosphate in aqueous solution by zeolites synthesized from fly ashes with different compositions

        Immobilization of ammonium and phosphate by zeolites synthesized from low-calcium (LC-Z) and highcalcium (HC-Z) fly ashes is studied. LC-Z has higher ammonium immobilization capacity while HC-Z has better performance in phosphate uptake. As part of Ca2+ released from HC-Z compete with ammonium the exchangeable sites in LC-Z, LC-Z can affect phosphate immobilization of HC-Z, and HC-Z also lowers ammonium uptake of LC-Z. Separate dosing of LC-Z and HC-Z, i.e., first LC-Z and then HC-Z, is proved better than mixed dosing at simultaneous immobilization of ammonium and phosphate. The effect parameters for phosphate and ammonium immobilization of LTH-Z are investigated.

      • HLA–DPB1 and DPB2 are genetic loci for systemic sclerosis: A genome-wide association study in Koreans with replication in North Americans

        <B>Objective</B><P>To identify systemic sclerosis (SSc) susceptibility loci via a genome-wide association study.</P><B>Methods</B><P>A genome-wide association study was performed in 137 patients with SSc and 564 controls from Korea using the Affymetrix Human SNP Array 5.0. After fine-mapping studies, the results were replicated in 1,107 SSc patients and 2,747 controls from a US Caucasian population.</P><B>Results</B><P>The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs3128930, rs7763822, rs7764491, rs3117230, and rs3128965) of HLA–DPB1 and DPB2 on chromosome 6 formed a distinctive peak with log P values for association with SSc susceptibility (P = 8.16 × 10<SUP>−13</SUP>). Subtyping analysis of HLA–DPB1 showed that DPB1*1301 (P = 7.61 × 10<SUP>−8</SUP>) and DPB1*0901 (P = 2.55 × 10<SUP>−5</SUP>) were the subtypes most susceptible to SSc in Korean subjects. In US Caucasians, 2 pairs of SNPs, rs7763822/rs7764491 and rs3117230/rs3128965, showed strong association with SSc patients who had either circulating anti–DNA topoisomerase I (P = 7.58 × 10<SUP>−17</SUP>/4.84 × 10<SUP>−16</SUP>) or anticentromere autoantibodies (P = 1.12 × 10<SUP>−3</SUP>/3.2 × 10<SUP>−5</SUP>), respectively.</P><B>Conclusion</B><P>The results of our genome-wide association study in Korean subjects indicate that the region of HLA–DPB1 and DPB2 contains the loci most susceptible to SSc in a Korean population. The confirmatory studies in US Caucasians indicate that specific SNPs of HLA–DPB1 and/or DPB2 are strongly associated with US Caucasian patients with SSc who are positive for anti–DNA topoisomerase I or anticentromere autoantibodies.</P>

        Cascade Network Based Bolt Inspection In High-Speed Train

        The detection of bolts is an important task in high-speed train inspection systems, and it is frequently performed to ensure the safety of trains. The difficulty of the vision-based bolt inspection system lies in small sample defect detection, which makes the end-to-end network ineffective. In this paper, the problem is resolved in two stages, which includes the detection network and cascaded classification networks. For small bolt detection, all bolts including defective bolts and normal bolts are put together for conducting annotation training, a new loss function and a new boundingbox selection based on the smallest axis-aligned convex set are proposed. These allow YOLOv3 network to obtain the accurate position and bounding box of the various bolts. The average precision has been greatly improved on PASCAL VOC, MS COCO and actual data set. After that, the Siamese network is employed for estimating the status of the bolts. Using the convolutional Siamese network, we are able to get strong results on few-shot classification. Extensive experiments and comparisons on actual data set show that the system outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in bolt inspection.

        Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical Coupling Research on Overburden Pressure Mitigated Ice Lens Growth in the Freezing Soil

        Frost heave induced ground surface uplift can have a destructive impact on infrastructures when freezing methods are used for underground construction. The complexity of overburden pressure and the coupled heat and mass transport interaction and their relation to different water flow rates make frost heave modelling an interesting but challenging task. A frost heave model describing phase transition and multiphase interactions (liquid-crystal-soil matrix) is presented in this paper and used to investigate the kinetic growth of the ice lens. By introducing water activity determined growth rate of ice crystals, the micro- and meso-physical mechanisms underlying ice lens growth involve ice crystal nucleation, crystallization, phase transition, and water migration in the frozen fringe are explored. This work indicates that the frozen fringe thickness, the ice crystals growth and the cryogenic-suction in the frozen fringe are particularly significant in determining the ice lens growth kinetics (frost heave) under different overburden pressures. The variation in ice lens growth under various overburden pressures appears to be controlled by the water flow path, cryogenic-suction, and permeability of the frozen fringe. This research reveals the kinetic growth of the ice lens, and helps to evaluate and mitigate geological hazards when artificial ground freezing is applied.

        중국 전지공예(剪紙) 기법 분석 기준에 따른 현대 패션디자인의 사례 연구 - 2015 S/S ~2019 S/S 컬렉션을 중심으로 -

        본 연구는 중국 전통 전지공예 기법에 대한 고찰과 이를 바탕으로 현대 패션에 표현된 사례를 전지공예 기법의 고유 특성에 따라 분석하고자 했다. 서적과 선행 연구를 통해 중국 전통 전지공예 기법을 분석한 후, 현대 사례로는 vogue.com의 최근 5년 컬렉션 자료를 사적 고찰하여 분석하였다. 연구 분석 결과, 첫째, 전통 전지공예 표현기법의 단색전지는 양·음각을 주기법으로하며 현대 패션에서 세밀한 강약 대비효과를 표현하였다. 이를 통해 현대 패션디자인의 예술적이면서 세밀한 장식적인 효과를 전달할 수 있다. 둘째, 현대 패션 디자인에 나타난 디자인 사례를 전통 전지공예 기법의 기준에 따라 분석하였고 그에 따른 대표적 미적가치를 찾을 수 있다. 셋째, 전통 전지 공예 기법 분석과 현대 패션디자인 적용 사례 분석을 통해 다양한 분야에 종사자들에게 창의적이고 무한한 활용 가능성을 제공할 것이다. In this study, we inspected the Chinese traditional paper cutting methods than based on the findings, the techniques and forms of shape of modern fashion were analysed, then analyzed their characteristics. The tradition paper cutting methodology was studied from books, and earlier studies, the case studies of modern fashion were collected from last five collections viewed from the webpage-vogue.com. The results of this study are as a following: firstly, Yin and Yang carving of monochrome paper cutting technique was often used to express the delicate contrast beauty in modern fashion designs. They were be able to convey artistic and decorative effect of Modern fashion design. Secondly, we found out the own aesthetic values from modern fashion design cases which were analysed by the Chinese paper cutting methodologies. Thirdly, Chinese paper cutting provided unlimited creativities and possibilities. Therefore, this study can provide a solid foundation to inherit the technique and multidirectional developments in various design fields in the future.

        Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging Characteristics of Prostate Tuberculosis

        To describe the multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of prostate tuberculosis. Six patients with prostate tuberculosis were analyzed retrospectively. The mean age of the patients was 60.5 years (range, 48–67 years). The mean prostate specific antigen concentration was 6.62 ng/mL (range, 0.54–14.57 ng/mL). All patients underwent a multiparametric MRI examination. The histopathological results were obtained from biopsies in four men and from transurethral resection of the prostate in two men after the MRI examination. Nodular (33%, 2/6 patients) and diffuse lesions (67%, 4/6 patients) were seen on MRI. The nodular lesions were featured by extremely low signal intensity (similar to that of muscle) on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI). The T2WI signal intensity of the diffuse lesions was low but higher than that of muscle, which showed high signal intensity on diffusion weighted imaging and low signal intensity on an apparent diffusion coefficient map. MR spectroscopic imaging of this type showed a normal-like spectrum. Abscesses were found in one patient with the nodular type and in one with the diffuse type. The appearance of prostate tuberculosis on MRI can be separated into multiple nodular and diffuse types. Multiparametric MRI may offer useful information for diagnosing prostate tuberculosis.

        Protective Effect of Astragaloside IV against Matrix Metalloproteinase- 1 Expression in Ultraviolet-Irradiated Human Dermal Fibroblasts

        Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induces skin photoaging associated with up-regulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression. Inhibition of MMP expression is suggested to alleviate photoaging induced by UV irradiation. Astragaloside IV (As-IV), one of the main active ingredients of Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bge, has been reported to have various biological activities. However, its anti-photoaging effect has not been examined to date. In the present study, we observed the effect of As-IV on matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression in UV-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). We found that treatment with As-IV significantly decreased UV-induced MMP-1 expression at the messenger RNA and protein levels. In addition, western blotting analysis revealed that As-IV concentration-dependently suppressed UV-induced phosphorylation of extracellular-regulated protein kinase, Jun-N-terminal kinase and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Furthermore, treatment with As-IV markedly inhibited UV-induced nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) activity. These results suggest that As-IV down-regulates UV-induced MMP-1 expression, perhaps through suppression of MAPK and NF-κB activation in HDFs. As-IV is thus a potential agent for the management of skin photoaging.

      • Staged development of long-lived T-cell receptor αβ T<sub>H</sub>17 resident memory T-cell population to <i>Candida albicans</i> after skin infection

        <P><B>Background</B></P> <P> <I>Candida albicans</I> is a dimorphic fungus to which human subjects are exposed early in life, and by adulthood, it is part of the mycobiome of skin and other tissues. Neonatal skin lacks resident memory T (T<SUB>RM</SUB>) cells, but in adults the <I>C albicans</I> skin test is a surrogate for immunocompetence. Young adult mice raised under specific pathogen-free conditions are naive to <I>C albicans</I> and have been shown recently to have an immune system resembling that of neonatal human subjects.</P> <P><B>Objective</B></P> <P>We studied the evolution of the adaptive cutaneous immune response to <I>Candida</I> species.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>We examined both human skin T cells and the <I>de novo</I> and memory immune responses in a mouse model of <I>C albicans</I> skin infection.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>In mice the initial IL-17–producing cells after <I>C albicans</I> infection were dermal γδ T cells, but by day 7, αβ T<SUB>H</SUB>17 effector T cells were predominant. By day 30, the majority of <I>C albicans</I>–reactive IL-17–producing T cells were CD4 T<SUB>RM</SUB> cells. Intravital microscopy showed that CD4 effector T cells were recruited to the site of primary infection and were highly motile 10 days after infection. Between 30 and 90 days after infection, these CD4 T cells became increasingly sessile, acquired expression of CD69 and CD103, and localized to the papillary dermis. These established T<SUB>RM</SUB> cells produced IL-17 on challenge, whereas motile migratory memory T cells did not. T<SUB>RM</SUB> cells rapidly clear an infectious challenge with <I>C albicans</I> more effectively than recirculating T cells, although both populations participate. We found that in normal human skin IL-17–producing CD4<SUP>+</SUP> T<SUB>RM</SUB> cells that responded to <I>C albicans</I> in an MHC class II–restricted fashion could be identified readily.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>These studies demonstrate that <I>C albicans</I> infection of skin preferentially generates CD4<SUP>+</SUP> IL-17–producing T<SUB>RM</SUB> cells, which mediate durable protective immunity.</P>

      • Transgenic sweetpotato plants overexpressing <i>tocopherol cyclase</i> display enhanced α-tocopherol content and abiotic stress tolerance

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) under various environmental stresses significantly reduces plant productivity. Tocopherols (collectively known as vitamin E) are a group of lipophilic antioxidants that protect cellular components against oxidative stress. Previously, we isolated five tocopherol biosynthesis genes from sweetpotato (<I>Ipomoea batatas</I> [L.] Lam) plants, including tocopherol cyclase (<I>IbTC</I>). In this study, we generated transgenic sweetpotato plants overexpressing <I>IbTC</I> under the control of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) <I>35S</I> promoter (referred to as TC plants) via <I>Agrobacterium</I>-mediated transformation to understand the function of <I>IbTC</I> in sweetpotato. Three transgenic lines (TC2, TC9, and TC11) with high transcript levels of <I>IbTC</I> were selected for further characterization. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed that α-tocopherol was the most predominant form of tocopherol in sweetpotato tissues. The content of α-tocopherol was 1.6–3.3-fold higher in TC leaves than in non-transgenic (NT) leaves. No significant difference was observed in the tocopherol content of storage roots between TC and NT plants. Additionally, compared with NT plants, TC plants showed enhanced tolerance to multiple environmental stresses, including salt, drought, and oxidative stresses, and showed consistently higher levels of photosystem II activity and chlorophyll content, indicating abiotic stress tolerance. These results suggest <I>IbTC</I> as a strong candidate gene for the development of sweetpotato cultivars with increased α-tocopherol levels and enhanced abiotic stress tolerance.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>IbTC</I> overexpressing transgenic sweetpotato (TC plants) were generated via <I>agrobacterium</I>-mediated transformation. </LI> <LI> α-tocopherol contents in leaves were increased in TC plants compared with NT plants. </LI> <LI> TC plants showed enhanced tolerance to various environmental stresses including salt, drought and oxidative stresses. </LI> </UL> </P>
