Evaluating the Load mass of foragers enhances the pre-selection of Apis cerana koreana honey bees for honey production

        Frunze Olga,Dong Won Kim,김수배,박보선,Peter N. Akongte,Yong-Soo Choi 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.2

Improving honey yield is a crucial concern in global beekeeping. Typically, honey extraction is used simulta neously to collect honey and assess honey bees, but this can vary from year to year, which has led to the development of alternative selection methods. The aim of this study was to analyze honey-related traits in order to update honey bee pre-selection methods. Apis cerana koreana X, R lines, RX crossbred were evaluated using traditional (Weekly honey control and Cut-honey) methods, internal morphological traits (Load mass 10 , Load mass 30 , Load mass All , Maximal Load mass All , Load (%), and Nectar crop weight), and Acfor gene expression. Xline colonies were selected for significantly higher (P < 0.0001) Load mass 10 , and Load mass 30 which had high discriminatory power (P < 0.0001) and low positive correlation to traditional methods. Our observations can be used for improving the method of honey bee selection for honey production and reducing dependence on nectar flow. However, further testing on Apis mellifera honey bees is necessary to confirm the universality of these criteria.

2021~2022년 아카시아 벌꿀 생산 특성과 현황 조사

        김경문,김주경,오대근,박보선,김수배,강은진,최용수,한상미,이만영,김동원 한국양봉학회 2022 韓國養蜂學會誌 Vol.37 No.3

Honey from the false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia) accounts for more than 70% of Korean honey production. Severe decrease of the honey production have been reported in Korea and caused economic losses in the bee farms in recent years. To investigate the annual status of the honey production in 2021 and 2022, we carried out a survey targeting the bee farms in different regions with different breeding scale. The mean acacia honey production in 2021 was 7.7 kg/ colony, which was similar to the low level of 2020 (9.1 kg/colony). 18.0 kg/colony of acacia honey was produced in 2022, showing a 133.8% recovery from the production of 2021, but it was found to be below the mean production level of before 2018. The mean water content of the acacia honey in 2021 and 2022 was 25.2±5.5% and 22.6±3.4%, respectively. The low and annually fluctuated production level of the acacia honey in recent years were due to the abnormal climate change, diseases and pests. We plan to continually carry out nationwide survey to prepare the countermeasures against the factors affecting honey production and reduce the economic damage of the apiaries.

Status and Prospective of Beekeeping in Bhutan: A Review

        Prasad Bhujel,Eun Jin Kang,김수배,박보선,Joo Gyeong Kim,Yong-Soo Choi 한국양봉학회 2022 韓國養蜂學會誌 Vol.37 No.2

Beekeeping is an ancient tradition in Bhutan. The country is divided into six agro-ecological zones and about 70.5% of the total land is covered with natural forest. Total six honey bee species are found. Three of them are kept in traditional and modern hives for honey production. Among the four regions, east central region produces the maximum honey followed by west central, western and eastern regions. The honey price per kg is Nu.5,000 ( US $ 63.5 ) to 7,000 (US $ 88.9) for Trigona honey, Nu.550 (US $ 6.9 ) to 1,410 (US $ 17.9) for A. cerana honey and Nu.700 (US $ 8.9 ) to 1,000 (US $ 12.7) for A. mellifera honey respectively. Currently, the estimated number of three species of honey bee colonies in Bhutan is 18,000 including traditional and modern hives. As domestic honey production cannot meet the growing market demand of the honey, Bhutan imports the quantity equal to its annual production from India to meet the domestic market demand. Beekeeping sector development was mainly constrained by the lack of a laboratory facilities and absence of breeding station for bee selection and breeding. Further, pests and predators, agro-chemical use and the negative impact of climate change are hindering beekeeping sector development. To address these problems, government and non-government organizations including private sectors are collectively putting their efforts to improve the sector.

Naturally produced honey by feeding chitosan to the honeybees

        Geon Kim,Young min Yun,Young Heun Jee,Chen Gum Oh,Byoung Su Yoon,Jae hyuk Yang,Yoon Kyu Lim 한국예방수의학회 2018 예방수의학회지 Vol.42 No.2

Chitosan is attracting attention as a health supplement material because of its various physiological activities. In this study, sugar solution containing chitosan was fed to honey bees to induce the production of ‘chitosan fortified honey’ by their same mode of natural honey production. To accomplish this, sugar solutions containing 0.1%, 1%, 2% and 5% chitosan were fed to the honey bees. Fully inverted Chitosan-honey was harvested after feeding the chitosan in sugar solution. To investigate the anti-obesity and immune-enhancing effects of Chitosan-honey, 1% and 10% Chitosan-honey containing drinking water were administrated freely to C57BL mice. Glucosamine concentrations in serum rapidly increased to peak levels in 10 minutes (1261.0 ± 97.6 ng/ml), then decreased gradually for more than 24 hours 793.0 ± 34.7 ng/ml. There were no significant differences in weight and or splenocyte proliferative capacity among experimental mice groups. However, increased granulocytes and monocytes were observed upon flow cytometric analysis. These results suggest that Chitosan-honey could induce removal of foreign antigens. In conclusion, ‘Chitosan-honey’ developed in this study has the potential for use as a honey type dietary health supplement with the same bioactivity as chitosan; however additional research should be conducted to confirm these effects.

Vol.25 No.1

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 75% of the worlds top 100 crops depend on honeybees for pollination. However, 8,000 of the worlds 20,000 species of wild bees are endangered, and honey production is rapidly decreasing. The number of honeybee colonies decreased by 64,299 in 2020 compared to 2019, and honey production in Korea also decreased by 68,272 tons during the same period . Therefore, there is rising awareness of the crisis in the agricultural sector due to the decrease in the honeybee population. Accordingly, this study attempted to identify the factors affecting the decrease in honey production. For this purpose, we analyzed time series data related to honeybees from 1988 to 2021 using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. As a result, it was found that the control area of forest pests and annual honey imports negatively affect honey production in the long run. Moreover, the quantum of honey exports had a negative impact in the short run, but the impact was analyzed to be insufficient. Finally, it was found that the average temperature (between March and August) in the previous year had a positive effect on honey production.

This study was conducted to evaluate the apiculture potential of five cultivated crops. Crops used in the study were grown in Suwon following standard cultivation guidelines. We investigated and analyzed flowering patterns, nectar secretion, sugar content, and potential honey production. The flowering period of buckwheat extended from May 20th to June 8th, while hairy vetch flowered from May 27th to July 4th and sunflower from June 16th to July 22nd. Sesame started flowering on June 23rd and finished on July 12th, perilla flowered from September 19th to October 8th. Among the crops, sesame exhibited the highest nectar secretion per flower at 5.15 μL/flower, followed by buckwheat at 0.50 μL/flower, and hairy vetch at 0.20 μL/flower. The free sugar content per unit was highest in sunflowers and hairy vetch, at 1,482.8 μg/μL and 1,049.0 μg/μL, respectively, compared to other species. Calculating from nectar secretion and free sugar content per unit, sesame had the highest sugar content per flower at 1.95 mg, followed by buckwheat at 0.42 mg and hairy vetch at 0.20 mg. Using sugar content per flower, the number of flowers per plant and the number of plants per hectare, we estimated the potential honey production. Buckwheat exhibited the highest potential honey production at 156.3 kg/ha, followed by sunflowers at 70.4 kg/ha, and sesame and hairy vetch at 55.5 kg/ha and 50.0 kg/ha, respectively. The estimated honey production for perilla was 33.4 kg per hectare.

Perspectives of multi-modal contribution of honeybee resources to our life

Hidehiro HOSHIBA,Masami Sasaki 한국곤충학회 2008 Entomological Research Vol.38 No.-

The European honeybee, Apis mellifera, has been introduced to all continents and their products like honey, propolis, royal jelly and beeswax are well known. However, its contribution is not restricted to such direct products but extends into a much wider area. For example, the economic value of seed production by pollination exceeds the above-mentioned bee products. The application of F1 hybrid is increased to as much as 70% of commercial crops and flowers in Japan and honeybees are important pollinators in the F1 seed production. Incorporation into the large-scale biodiesel fuel production system by culturing rape and sunflower seeds etc. is relied on because it is good to construct possible zero-emission systems that reduce carbon dioxide and increase the rich by-products like honey and royal jelly. Bees' higher brain function and sophisticated social system of the colony opens new perspectives as a model system. Their individual ability to recognize even abstract concepts is comparable to that of higher primates. Rats or mice have no such ability. High performance learning ability of bees associated with proboscis extension reflex can be used to detect drugs at the airport. Function of the colony, on the other hand, is an excellent model for social physiology or a self-organization system. After the whole genome of A. mellifera was read in 2006 by the world consortium, consisting of more than 90 institutions from all over the world, many molecular biologists are coming into bee world. Nobody has yet succeeded in the challenge to make transgenic honeybee, so far, because of the difficulty in controlling the reproductive system headed by the queen. However, if someone succeeded in a breakthrough we will have stingless honeybees and a disease-resistant strain in the future.

The overall goal of this research is to improve the honey production of queen honey bees. This will enhance the economic value of the nation’s honey bees for honey production, and hazard resistance. Our main objective of this research is to test of honey bees(A. mellifera) that have increased as well as being good honey producers and resistance of disease in jeon-nam province. The new honey bee(A. mellifera) stock were identified ability of increasing honey production by comparing with rearing practice colony. The new honey bee(A. mellifera) stock can produce more than 30~50% honey(HP; 12.31 kg) comparing with rearing practice colonies(control 1; 8.17 kg, and control 2; 9.53 kg). Furthermore, we are calculated the number of worker bee per colony. Population of worker bee in new honey bee(A. mellifera) stock are 2,849 (colony 1), 8,860 (colony 2) and 10,451 (colony 3), it was more then 1.2~3.7 fold comparing with controls.

      • Strategies for Continuous Development of Beekeeping Industry in Korea : Year-round Honey Production with Establishing Honey Plants Plantations on Forests as an Example

        Ryu, Jang-Bal 대구대학교 생명과학연구소 2003 생명과학연구 Vol.1 No.3

As an example of strategies for continuous development of beekeeping industry in Korea, year-round honey production with establishing honey plants plantations on forests was carried out and the results were promising, 19 spieces were chosen and plantations were established on the campus of Daegu University this spring. Honey was harvested 7 times, from April to September, and honey from black locust shared 22.5%. This share was much lower than 70% of beekeepers who keep bees without establishing honey plant plantations. Though considering very poor harvest from black locust this year, production of 77.5% of honey from other honey plants are promising, because more blooming would be expected from plantations established this year.
