Effect of anatomic, semi-anatomic and non-anatomic occlusal surface tooth preparations on the adaptation of zirconia copings

Habib, Syed Rashid,Asiri, Waleed,Hefne, Mohammed Jameel The Korean Academy of Prosthodonitics 2014 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.6 No.6

PURPOSE. To compare the accuracy of marginal and internal adaptation of zirconia (Zr) copings fabricated on anatomic (A), semi-anatomic (SA) and non-anatomic (NA) occlusal surface preparations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 45 extracted bicuspid teeth were prepared for receiving zirconia crowns, with different occlusal preparation designs A=15, SA=15 & NA=15. The Zr copings were fabricated by using CAD4DENT, CAD/CAM. The copings were adjusted, cemented and were cross sectioned centrally from buccal cusp tip to lingual cusp tip into mesial and distal halves. The copings were examined under electron microscope at ${\times}200$ magnification and the measurements were recorded at 9 predetermined areas in micrometers. RESULTS. Overall mean gap values for the three groups was found to be $155.93{\pm}33.98{\mu}m$ with Anatomical Occlusal preparation design having the least gap value of $139.23{\pm}30.85{\mu}m$ showing the best adaptation among the groups. Post Hoc Tukey's test showed a statistically significant difference (P=.007) between the means of gap for A & NA preparation designs. Measurements recorded at 9 predetermined points showed variations for the three groups. CONCLUSION. Anatomical occlusal preparation designs resulted in better marginal and internal adaptation of Zr copings. There is a considerable variation between the measured marginal and internal gap values for the Zr copings fabricated by the (CAD4DENT-CAD/CAM). This variation may be associated with the lack of standardization of the preparation of teeth, computerized designing of the coping for each tooth, cement used, uniform pressure application during the cementation of the copings, sectioning of the copings and the microscopic measurements.

A Study on the Fracture Strength of All-Ceramic Crown according to the Zirconia Coping Design using CAD/CAM System L. Bulgan, In-Ho Cho, Soo-Yeon Shin Department of Prosthodontics, Graduate School, Dankook University The fracture strength of prosthesis is important, because it affects the function, and long term success of prosthesis and teeth. The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of zirconia coping designs. Experimental test group were classified into three designs according to coping design, Modified design: Zirconia coping margin was located at 1mm above the axiogingival line angle. Collarless design: The coping margin terminated at the axiogingival line angle Butt design: The coping margin was extended to the finishing line of prepared margin. A Cercon(Degussa, Germany) CAD/CAM system was used to make the zirconia coping. Fracture strength was measured using loading machine at a cross head speed of 1mm/min. The results were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison test. Statistical significance was set in advance at the probability level of less than 0.05. The result : I. Collarless(738N±155N) and Modified(755N±185N) groups showed significantly a lower fracture strength than Butt(1057N±262N) group(p<0.05). II. There were no statistical differences of the fracture strength between Modified(755N±185N) and Collarless(738N±155N) groups. III. When comparing the fractured surface, all the group showed porcelain fracture, which were fractured at the labial surface of baked porcelain The butt design of the zirconia coping has higher fracture strength than modified and collarless design.

The effect of different cooling rates and coping thicknesses on the failure load of zirconia-ceramic crowns after fatigue loading

Yu Lung Tang,Jee-Hwan Kim,June-Sung Shim,Sunjai Kim 대한치과보철학회 2017 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.9 No.3

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of different coping thicknesses and veneer ceramic cooling rates on the failure load of zirconia-ceramic crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia copings of two different thicknesses (0.5 mm or 1.5 mm; n=20 each) were fabricated from scanning 40 identical abutment models using a dental computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system. Zirconiaceramic crowns were completed by veneering feldspathic ceramics under different cooling rates (conventional or slow, n=20 each), resulting in 4 different groups (CONV05, SLOW05, CONV15, SLOW15; n=10 per group). Each crown was cemented on the abutment. 300,000 cycles of a 50-N load and thermocycling were applied on the crown, and then, a monotonic load was applied on each crown until failure. The mean failure loads were evaluated with two-way analysis of variance (P=.05). RESULTS. No cohesive or adhesive failure was observed after fatigue loading with thermocycling. Among the 4 groups, SLOW15 group (slow cooling and 1.5 mm chipping thickness) resulted in a significantly greater mean failure load than the other groups (P<.001). Coping fractures were only observed in SLOW15 group. CONCLUSION. The failure load of zirconia-ceramic crowns was significantly influenced by cooling rate as well as coping thickness. Under conventional cooling conditions, the mean failure load was not influenced by the coping thickness; however, under slow cooling conditions, the mean failure load was significantly influenced by the coping thickness.

        이정환,안재석 대한치과기공학회 2017 대한치과기공학회지 Vol.39 No.4

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the marginal and internal gap of zirconia copings fabricated by CAD/CAM system and to research the effect of cement space on the fit of zirconia prosthesis. Methods: Zirconia copings were designed using 3shape software and then milled from presintered zirconia blocks by Kavo dental milling machine. The cement space was set at 0 ㎛ around the margins for all groups, and additional cement space appling 1 mm above the finish lines of tooth. The samples were classified into 4 groups according to the cement space setting(Cs-0, Cs-40, Cs-80, Cs-120). Replica technique used to investigate marginal and internal gap. The silicone film thickness was recorded using a optical microscope with image software analysis system at 75×magnification. The assessment performed on the six points in bucco-lingual and mesio-distal sections(4 groups, 10 copings per group, 12 measuring points per coping). The data were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA followed by pair-wise Tukey’s post hoc tests(α<0.05). Results: Better marginal and internal fit values were exhibited by 80 ㎛ cement space. The results showed that different cement space values had statistically significant effect on the marginal and internal gap of zirconia copings(p<0.001). The gap of margin and axial wall area was smaller than that the gap of occlusal area in all groups(p<0.001). Conclusion : Effect of different cement spaces on the marginal and internal gap of zirconia copings.

The purpose of this study was to compare of marginal fitness of zirconia copings according to impression techniques and zirconia blocks. For the conventional impression, two types of rubber impression materials were used and digital impression was made by using an intraoral scanner. Zirconia copings were manufactured from three types of blocks. With each of ten zirconia copings was determined by surface roughness and marginal fitness. For surface roughness, LUXEN Smile(2.3±0.9㎛) block was superior. And the lowest mean values and standard deviations of marginal gap for the HL specimens were 26.5±2.1㎛ for buccal, 27.2±2.1㎛ for lingual, and that of the HJ specimens 29.6±4.0㎛ for mesial, 29.0±3.0㎛ for distal. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for marginal fitness(p<0.05). From the above results, the impression techniques and zirconia blocks had influence on marginal fit of the zirconia copings. Also the marginal fitness of all groups showed clinically acceptable range.

The effect of resin cements and primer on retentive force of zirconia copings bonded to zirconia abutments with insufficient retention

김승미,윤지영,이명현,오남식 대한치과보철학회 2013 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.5 No.2

PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of resin cements and primer on the retentive force of zirconia copings bonded to zirconia abutments with insufficient retention. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia blocks (Lava, 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) were obtained and forty sets of zirconia abutments and copings were fabricated using CAD/CAM technology. They were grouped into 4 categories as follows, depending on the types of resin cements used, and whether the primer is applied or not:Panavia F2.0 (P), Panavia F2.0 using Primer (PRIME Plus, Bisco Inc, Schaumburg, IL, USA) (PZ), Superbond C&B (S), and Superbond C&B using Primer (SZ). For each of the groups, the cementation was conducted. The specimens were kept in sterilized water (37℃) for 24 hours. Retentive forces were tested and measured, and a statistical analysis was carried out. The nature of failure was recorded. RESULTS. The means and standard deviations of retentive force in Newton for each group were 265.15 ± 35.04 N (P), 318.21 ± 22.24 N (PZ), 445.13 ± 78.54 N (S) and 508.21 ± 79.48 N (SZ). Superbond C&B groups (S & SZ) showed significantly higher retentive force than Panavia F2.0 groups (P & PZ). In Panavia F2.0 groups, the use of primer was found to contribute to the increase of retentive force. On the other hand, in Superbond C&B groups, the use of primer did not influence the retention forces. Adhesive failure was observed in all groups. CONCLUSION. This study suggests that cementation of the zirconia abutments and zirconia copings with Superbond C&B have a higher retentive force than Panavia F2.0. When using Panavia F2.0, the use of primer increases the retentive force.
