The purpose of this study was to investigate whether enzyme-hydrolyzed poultry by-product meal (EHPBM) is more effective as a protein source than poultry by-product meal (PBM) and soybean meal (SBM) for broiler chickens. A group of 300 one-day-old broiler chicks was randomly allocated to three treatments with five replicates (20 birds/replicate) for five weeks. The treatments consisted of basal diets containing 1) SBM, 2) PBM, and 3) EHPBM. The EHPBM-fed group (1,853 g±125.60) showed the highest final body weight (P<0.05) when compared to the PBM-fed group (1,723 g±76.81) and SBM-fed group (1,545 g±62.31). The feed conversion ratio of the EHPBM treatment group (1.740±0.104) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of the SBM (1.653±0.056) and PBM groups (1.674±0.072). It can be speculated that the increased feed intake in the EHPBM group led to higher body weight gain and FCR. There was no significant effect of treatments on internal organ weight except for the bursa of Fabricius. Blood biochemical characteristic analysis showed that aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase levels were higher in the EHPBM and PBM groups (P<0.05), probably due to the strained liver caused by the rapid growth of birds. In conclusion, EHPBM may partly replace conventional dietary protein sources such as soybean meal or poultry by-product meal and can be used to improve the productivity of broilers.

Poultry By-Product Meal as a Potential Protein Source in Broiler Diets with Exogenous Protease Supplementation

        Heshani Amalka Vithana,Shemil Priyan Macelline,Shan Randima Nawarathna,Dinesh Darshaka Jayasena,유명환,서은수,Mangala Amarsinghe,Maleeka Nadeemale Nambapana,Jin Ho Cho,허정민 한국가금학회 2023 韓國家禽學會誌 Vol.50 No.1

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of exogenous protease supplementation in dietsformulated with poultry by-product meal on growth performance, small intestine magnitudes, and meat physiochemicalcharacters in broiler chickens from 21 to 35 days post-hatch. A total of 120, one-day-old "Arbor Acres Plus" broiler chickens(male: female - 50:50) were allocated one of two dietary treatments to give six replicates and ten birds per cage. Two dietarytreatments included a control diet (CON) and a diet supplemented with protease (CON+Pro). At day 35, body weight andfeed intakes were measured to calculate the feed conversion ratio for the entire experiment period. Two birds from each penwere euthanized to measure the relative lengths and relative weights of three small intestine sections and meat samples werecollected for physiochemical characteristic analyses at 35 days post-hatch. Exogenous protease supplementation did notinfluence (P>0.05) growth performance but showed a tendency to improve FCR (P=0.082). Protease supplementation showed a tendency to reduce proximal small intestine length (P=0.091). Broilers offered dietary treatments influenced minced meatcolor where protease supplementation resulted in lower CIE b* (P<0.001) colorimetric value for yellowness and showed a significant trend (P=0.059) on reducing meat redness CIE a*. In conclusion, the addition of exogenous protease to a broilerdiet formulated with poultry by-product meal did not affect the growth performance, small intestine magnitudes, and meatphysiochemical parameters (except CIE b*) in broiler chickens.

Effects of Replacement of Fish Meal with Poultry By-product Meals on Apparent Digestibility, Body Composition and Protein Efficiency Ratio in a Practical Diets for Rainbow Trout, Onchorynchus mykiss

Erturk, M.Mustafa,Sevgili, Huseyin Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.9

This study examined the replacement of the fish meal (FM) with commercial poultry by-product meal (PBM) in practical diets for rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss, Walbaum). Five isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets containing levels 0 (control), 10, 20, 30 and 40% of PBM as a replacement for FM were fed to three replicate groups of rainbow trout with a initial weight $34.50{\pm}0.43g$ (mean${\pm}$SE). Protein efficiency ratio (PER) of diets containing PBM up to 20% were similar to the control while significantly lower values were obtained from the groups receiving higher levels of PBM (p<0.05). Apparent protein digestibility coefficients (ADCs) were significantly lower than that of the control group when PBM was included at level of 20% or more. Similarly, significantly lower values were observed with diets containing 30 and 40% PBM in terms of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, ash and energy digestibility (p<0.05). Dietary treatments did not significantly affect the body composition of the fish in terms of dry matter, crude protein, ether extract and ash. In conclusion, PBM in a proportion of 20% may replace about 40 % of FM in rainbow trout diet without significant impairment grow.

On-farm evaluation of dietary animal and plant proteins to replace fishmeal in subadult olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus

2020 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.23 No.3

Background: High demand and low supply of fishmeal due to overexploitation of fisheries resources have resulted in a dramatic increase in the price of this ingredient. Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) commercial feed contains approximately 60% fishmeal and limited success has been achieved in identifying sustainable alternative protein sources for this species. Methods: An on-farm feeding trial was conducted to compare a basal diet containing 65% as the control (CONT) with two experimental diets replacing 10% of fishmeal by animal protein (AP10) or 20% of fishmeal by animal and plant protein (APP20). Sub-adult olive flounder averaging 327 ± 9.3 g (mean±SD) were fed one of the three diets in triplicate groups for 16 weeks. Results: Weight gain, specific growth rate, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, and survival were not significantly different among fish fed all the experimental diets (P > 0.05). Also, non-specific immune responses (superoxide dismutase and lysozyme activity), serum biochemical parameters, and intestinal villi length were not significantly different among fish fed all the experimental diets (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Therefore, based on growth performance, non-specific immune responses, serum biochemical parameters, and intestinal histology, dietary animal and plant protein mixtures could replace up to 20% of fishmeal in the diet of sub-adult olive flounder.
