Mary Wollstonecraft 교육론의 유아교육적 함의

본 연구의 목적은 18세기 여성 페미니스트였던 울스톤크래프트의 교육 사상을 탐구하고, 그녀의 교육론의 유아교육적 함의를 고찰하는 데 있다. 울스톤크래프트의 교육관은 교육을 통한 여성해방, 이성의 함양, 적극적 모성론으로 정리될 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 유아교육적인 가치, 아동관, 교육목표, 교육내용과 방법, 부모교육의 측면에서 유아교육적인 의미를 고찰하였다. 고찰한 결과 울스톤크래프트의 교육론이 갖는 유아교육적 의미는 유아기부터 남녀에게 동등한 교육을 제공하는 것에 가치를 부여하고, 아동을 사회적 존재로 보며, 유아기 교육의 주요 목표는 이성을 발달시키는 것이며, 유아의 발달적 특성에 맞는 유아교육의 내용과 방법을 적용하여 교육하며, 부모들은 모델링을 통한 교육의 가치를 인식하고 실천할 것으로 정리되었다. 울스톤 크래프트는 최초의 페미니스트로서 여성의 목소리로 여성의 교육권에 대하여 주장하였으며 그 구체적인 방법의 제안은 유아교육에 갖는 의미가 크다고 할 수 있다. This study examined the thought of education of Mary Wollstonecraft, a feminist in the 18th century and explored its meanings in the field of childhood education. The thought of education of Wollstonecraft was the liberation of female through education, fostering rationality, active motherhood to care and educate their children. According to Wollstonecraft’s thought of education, meanings for childhood education could be suggested in the aspect of value of childhood education, the view of child, object of education, contents and the ways of education. And the results are; the value of her opinion for education was to give same opportunity between female and male from childhood to be educated. She imaged a child as a social one, the main object of childhood education was to develop their rationality, there could be suggested better ways to educate children according to their development, and parents should recognize and practice to discipline children by modeling. Wollstonecraft maintained the equal rights of female to be educated, suggested practical ways of educating children, and gave valuable implications in the field of childhood education.

루소(Rousseau)와 울스톤크라프트(Wollstonecraft)

이 글에서 필자는 인간의 자유와 평등을 주장하는 근대사상가로서 루소의 여성에 대한 분석과 평가, 판단과 프랑스 혁명 정신을 격찬하는 근대 여성사상가 울스톤크라프트의 여성에 대한 가능성을 ‘여성 시민’ 개념을 중심으로 비교, 분석하고자 한다. 나아가 루소의 여성에 대한 이해와 좋은 사회를 위한 각자의 역할을 찾아보고, 울스톤크라프트의 루소 비판을 분석한다. 특히 루소와 울스톤크라프트의 여성에 대한 이해는 각자의 소설에 잘 드러나 있는만큼, 루소의 〈에밀〉의 여주인공 소피와, 〈뉴엘로이즈〉의 여주인공 줄리, 울스톤크라프트의 소설 〈메리〉와 〈여성의 고난〉의 여주인공 메리와 마리아, 저마이마의 삶을 통해 드러나는 희망과 절망을 통해 이들의 사상을 들여다 보면서, 여성 시민의 가능성과 새로운 미래사회의 가치에 대해 논해보고자 한다. In this study, I would like to compare and analyze Rousseau’s analysis and evaluation of women and women’s possibility proposed by Wollstonecraft. Here the core concept is the female citizen. Furthermore, I will search for understanding on women by Rousseau and her role for good society, and also explain Wollstonecraft’s critic on Rousseau. It is because that their own understanding on women is especially represented very well in their novels such as Emile, New Eloise, Mary: a Fiction and Maria: Wrongs of Women. Through the life of Sophie, Julie, Mary, Maria and Jemima as their heroines, I will look for the possibility of the female citizen and also the value of the future society.

결혼, 여성의 의무인가? - 18세기 영국 지식인 여성들의 선택

본 논문은 18세기에 새로운 결혼관이 정립될 때 영국의 여성지식인들이 이를 어떻게 수용했는지를 다루고 있다. 특히 당대의 진보적인 여성관을 주도한 메리 울스톤크래프트와 블루스타킹의 결혼관을 비교분석하여, 그들의 지향점이 약간씩은 달랐음에도 불구하고 결혼은 남녀의 자유로운 의사에 의한 결합이어야 한다는 계몽주의적 견해를 공유했음을 밝혔다. 이들은 결혼이 당시 남성지식인들의 주장대로 `여성의 의무`라는 담론을 넘어서서, 결혼은 특히 여성이 주도하는, 여성에 의한 선택이어야 한다고 강조하였다. 따라서 이들에 따르면 사회는 여성이 스스로 선택을 할 수 있도록 여성 교육을 허용해야 하며, 나아가 자발적인 비결혼여성, 즉 독신 여성의 사회적 활동을 보장하는 환경을 조성해주어야 했다. 아니면 적어도 여성들끼리 우정과 연대에 기초한 조직, 예를 들어 이전의 수녀원과 유사한 조직이나 오늘날의 기숙학교와 비슷한 기구를 인정해주어야 한다고 주장한다. 그리고 그들은 이러한 대안적 기구나 조직을 직접 만들어 여성 교육을 담당하고자 하였다. The purpose of this paper is to examine what was the thought of women intellectuals` about marriage in Eighteenth-Century England. At that time, the view of marriage of Enlightenment was spread out the intellectuals with step by step, that is a kind of social contract. Mary Wollstonecraft and the Bluestockings played a important role in proliferating this concept of marriage and they shared the opinion, especially that was the choice of woman. Even though they had viewed the `women`s question` in a different light, they persisted together that women have a right of the marriage and so need women`s education to prepare their own future by themselves. Furthermore, they also have had a attempt to build women`s social organization which founded on friendship and solidarity. It was Millenium Hall, a kind of convent or boarding school. Then it was explicit that they would have in mind, but come out, a solidarity and `new family` to replace the marriage.

프랑스대혁명과 근대기획 그리고 시민 여성의 희망과 절망: 울스톤크라프트(Wollstonecraft)의 소설을 중심으로

이 글은 모든 인간의 자유와 평등이라는 프랑스 혁명 정신에 열광했던 영국의 여성 지식인 메리 울스톤크라프트의 사상을 기초로 하여, 당시 여성의 삶에 대한 암울한 보고서라 할 수 있는 그의 작품 <Mary, a Fiction: 소설 메리>와 <Maria, or The Wrongs of Woman: 마리아, 여성의 고난>을 통해 자유와 평등의 가치가 세상에 자리잡아가는 시기에 여성들에게는 그 빛이 미치지 못하고 있음에 대해 알아본다. 근대기획의 핵심에는 인간의 자유와 평등이 자리잡고 있으며, 이를 기반으로 한‘근대 시민’이 정치의 주인으로 등장한다. 이 글의 핵심적 논제는 근대기획 당시 울스톤크라프트의 소설에 나타난 여성의 희망과 절망을 통해 시민 여성의 가능성을 알아보는데 있다. This is based on the thought of Mary Wollstonecraft who admired the spirit of liberty and equality embedded in the French Revolution. Through her novels such as <Mary, a Fiction> and <Maria, or the Wrongs of Woman>, she wanted to let the people know the unjust fact that women could not fully enjoyed liberty and equality. Human freedom and equality are situated in the core of the modern project, with which ‘modern citizen’ has come to the fore of the political arena. In this study, I would like to search the possibility of the female citizen through the hope and despair of women appeared in the novels of Wollstonecraft at the time of the modern project.
