        Syntactic Distribution of the Semantic Classes of Dative Verbs in English and Cantonese: A Crosslinguistic Perspective

        This paper examines the distribution of the semantic classes of dative verbs in syntactic constructions, focusing on data from English and Cantonese. While both languages have two dative constructions, the prepositional dative construction (PDC) and the double object construction (DOC), they differ as to the extent they extend these constructions to major dative verb classes. This paper proposes a unifying analysis of the syntactic distribution of the semantic classes of dative verbs in English and Cantonese. On the basis of a closer examination of semantic properties of dative verbs and constructions in the two languages, we argue that verb distribution in these languages can be accounted for in a unified way by general constraints on semantic compatibilities between verbs and constructions and the choice of cut-off points on an implicational hierarchy of ditransitive verbs.

        Understanding the Influence of Local Coherence on the Reanalysis Process of Temporally Ambiguous Noun Phrase: The Role of Animacy

        In this study, we conducted a self-paced reading experiment to explore how a locally coherent structure formed by an animate temporally ambiguous noun phrase (DP) and its subsequent verb guides the reanalysis of the ambiguous DP. In the sentence “While the police was investigating the detective examined by the lawyer an officer opened the door,” the DP “the detective” following the ambitransitive verb “investigate” is temporally ambiguous in its syntactic position: it can be the direct object (DO) of “investigate” or the matrix subject (MS) of the main clause. This temporary syntactic ambiguity can be resolved upon encountering the DP “an officer,” which allows only the DO analysis of “the detective.” Following previous studies (cf. Phillips 1995), the DO analysis of “the detective” is initially preferred. This is compatible with the later appearing DP “an officer,” which should be the MS of the main clause. However, processing difficulty was observed when the DP “an officer” was encountered. This suggests that readers performed the MS reanalysis of the DP “the detective” before encountering the disambiguating DP “an officer.” In comparison, no processing difficulty was observed when the temporally ambiguous DP was inanimate (“the evidence”). This suggests that animacy plays a role in forming the local coherence (cf. Tabor et al. 2004) that leads to the reanalysis of the temporally DO/MS ambiguous DP.

        Openings in Informal Cantonese Mobile Phone Conversations

        Phone call openings have been a subject of interest for research studies across cultures and languages since the 1960s (e.g., Desrosiers, 2006; Lee, 2006; Schegloff, 1968, 1979; Sun, 2004). Over the recent decades, many new features in mobile phone openings that coincided with changes in technology have been introduced (e.g., Arminen & Leinonen, 2006; Hutchby & Barnett, 2005; Laursen & Szymanski, 2013; Mahzari, 2019; Weilenmann, 2003). Using the conversation analytic approach, this study investigates the opening sequences and ritual expressions in terms of informal Cantonese mobile phone conversations between acquaintances across ages. Overall, 5 opening sequences are identified by analyzing transcriptions of the data consisting of 30 naturally occurring mobile phone calls made by 12 female native speakers of Cantonese to their friends or families. It is observed that unlike the relatively ordered and routine system in telephone openings, these 5 sequences do not appear together in a fixed order in one single conversation. What’s more, the ritual expressions in these turns seem to orient to the participants’ id, location, and current activities. Furthering this body, the current analysis contributes to the study of the structures and features of mobile phone call openings both interculturally and intraculturally.

        Asymmetries of English wh-adjunct/argument in Negative Island Sensitivity: An Experimental Study

        It has been argued that English wh-adjunct/argument reveals some asymmetries in island (in)sensitivity such that wh-arguments are insensitive to islands while wh-adjuncts are not (Huang 1982; Ross 1984; Rizzi 1990, 1992; Lasnik and Saito 1992; Szabolcsi and Zwarts 1993; Sprouse and Hornstein 2013). Arguments have addressed this assumption from various perspectives, among which the two major classes are general government (e.g., the Empty Category Principle) and binding (e.g., referentiality). While the government relations are strictly local (Chomsky, 1981), binding can span a certain distance as long as there is coindexation between the operator and the variable (Pesetsky 1987; Cinque 1990; Rizzi 1990, 1992). In this study, we conduct two acceptability rating experiments to investigate the adjunct-argument asymmetry in island sensitivity. By comparing two whys with two whos in two distinct syntactic positions (see Kim 2019; Kim, Wellwood, and Yoshida under revision for the assumptions of two different whys), we demonstrate that there is a general ban on wh-movement out of negative islands. However, the referentiality may potentially ameliorate the violation of negative island for wh-argument compared with wh-adjunct (Cinque 1990; Rizzi 1990, 1992).

        Design and Development of Superimposed Directional Comparison Protection Scheme

        To achieve the UK Net Zero future by 2050, National Grid needs to integrate significantly more renewable generation into the power grid. This increases the level of harmonics, reduces system inertia and adversely affects the fault level and the performance of existing protection relays. One solution to the protection problem is the use of new types of protection that use the change in the voltage and current caused by the fault, often referred to as a superimposed or incremental based protection technique. This paper describes how a superimposed directional comparison protection scheme performed when applied to a reduced section of the full UK National Grid network and relates this to the operating performance of traditional protection. Tests are performed using the simulators DIgSILENT and RelaySimTest configured with different source levels, fault types, fault locations and fault resistances. Results show the superimposed based protection scheme achieves faster fault detection and tripping than conventional protection and is capable of detecting higher resistive faults on networks where the source capacities vary from strong to weak.

        Finite Time State Estimation of Complex-valued BAM Neutral-type Neural Networks with Time-varying Delays

        This paper considers the finite time state estimation problem of complex-valued bidirectional associativememory (BAM) neutral-type neural networks with time-varying delays. By resorting to the Lyapunov functionapproach, the Wirtinger inequality and the reciprocally convex approach, a delay-dependent criterion in terms ofLMIs is established to guarantee the finite-time boundedness of the error-state system for the addressed system. Meanwhile, an effective state estimator is designed to estimate the network states through the available outputmeasurements. Finally, a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

        NIR light-powered halloysite-based nanomotors for CT imaging diagnosis and synergistic chemo-photothermal cancer therapy

        Near-infrared (NIR) light-powered nanomotors with active motion have attracted extensive attention inthe chemo-photothermal therapy of cancer. However, there are also some limitations such as complicatedsynthesis process, low permeability of drugs and viscous physiological environment. Herein, wedeveloped a facile route to synthesize novel NIR light-powered DOX/Au-m-HTAS nanomotor based onnatural halloysite (HNTs) for active chemo-photothermal therapy. Such nanomotor exhibited NIR lightcontrolled on/off motion with a maximum speed of 64.5 lm/s. Owing to the synergetic NIR lightpoweredmotion and chemo-photothermal therapy, DOX/Au-m-HTAS nanomotor could effectivelyadhere tumor cells, leading to deeper cell penetration, higher cellular uptake, and better ablation oftumor cells. Meanwhile, DOX/Au-m-HTAS nanomotors also had enhanced ability for CT imaging of localtumor, demonstrating the enhanced anticancer efficiency. This strategy provided a new insight into thechemo-photothermal synergistic therapy of tumors.

        A novel vibration isolator for vibrating screen based on magnetorheological damper

        A vibrating screen is widely used in raw coal screening, but intensive resonance in the startup and shutdown stages shortens the service life of the vibrating screen and generates vibration damage to surrounding buildings. Therefore, we designed a novel vibration isolator based on a magnetorheological damper, aiming to improve the vibration isolation performance of the vibrating screen. The rheological mechanical model of damping force was analyzed based on the Bingham model, and a magnetic circuit was designed according to electromagnetic theory. Then, an experiment was designed to evaluate the vibration isolation performance of the vibration isolator. The results show that the novel vibration isolator, compared with the metal spring ones, reduces the maximum resonance amplitude by 64 % in the resonance region. In addition, the time of passing through the resonance region in startup and shutdown stages is also reduced by 50 % and 60 %, respectively. This study can provide a new method to improve the vibration isolation performance of vibrating screens.
