      • Individual Identification by Gait Vibration Data Transmitted Floor

        The establishment of variety methods in the individual identification technology is desirable. In this study, it is considered that the method of individual identification from vibration data generated in gait. In the walking motion, the unique information such as the individual’s body type and habit is contained. It is assumed that the unique information is reflected in the gait vibration data transmitted in the floor. The potential for application to individual identification is shown by extracting one step and analyzing the unique information from the gait vibration data. The Adaboost method is applied to the extraction of one step of the walking. In order to represent the characteristics of each individual and analyzed using the Principal Component Analysis.

        A privacy-preserving sharing method of electricity usage using self-organizing map

        Smart meters for measuring electricity usage are expected in electricity usage management. Although the relevant power supplier stores the measured data, the data are worth sharing among power suppliers because the entire data of a city will be required to control the regional grid stability or demand–supply balance. Even though many techniques and methods of privacy-preserving data mining have been studied to share data while preserving data privacy, a study on sharing electricity usage data is still lacking. In this paper, we propose a sharing method of electricity usage while preserving data privacy using a self-organizing map.

        Effectiveness and Sustainability of Education about Incident Reporting at a University Hospital in Japan

        Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of educational interventions to encourage incident reporting. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental design. The study involved nurses working in two gastroenterology surgical wards at Fukuoka University Hospital, Japan. The number of participants on each ward was 26 nurses at baseline. For the intervention group, we provided 15 minutes of education about patient safety and the importance of incident reporting once per month for six months. After the completion of the intervention, we compared incident reporting in the subsequent 12 months for both groups. Questionnaires about reasons/motives for reporting were administered three times, before the intervention, after the intervention, and six months after the intervention for both the intervention group and the control group. Results: For the intervention group, incident reporting during the 6 months after the intervention period increased significantly compared with the baseline. During the same period, the reasons and motives for reporting changed significantly in the intervention group. The increase in reported incidents during the 6- to 12-month period following the intervention was not significant. In the control group, there was no significant difference during follow-up compared with the baseline. Conclusions: A brief intervention about patient safety changed the motives for reporting incidents and the frequency of incidents reported by nurses working in surgical wards in a university hospital in Japan. However, the effect of the education decreased after six months following the education. Regular and long-term effort is required to maintain the effect of education.

        Clinical and imaging features of multiple system atrophy: Challenges for early and clinically definite diagnosis

        Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is an adult-onset, progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Patients with MSA show various phenotypes during the course of their illness, including parkinsonism, cerebellar ataxia, autonomic failure, and pyramidal signs. Patients with MSA sometimes present with isolated autonomic failure or motor symptoms/ signs. The median duration from onset to the concomitant appearance of motor and autonomic symptoms is approximately 2 years but can range up to 14 years. As the presence of both motor and autonomic symptoms is essential for the current diagnostic criteria, early diagnosis is difficult when patients present with isolated autonomic failure or motor symptoms/signs. In contrast, patients with MSA may show severe autonomic failure and die before the presentation of motor symptoms/signs, which are currently required for the diagnosis of MSA. Recent studies have also revealed that patients with MSA may show nonsupporting features of MSA such as dementia, hallucinations, and vertical gaze palsy. To establish early diagnostic criteria and clinically definitive categorization for the successful development of disease-modifying therapy or symptomatic interventions for MSA, research should focus on the isolated phase and atypical symptoms to develop specific clinical, imaging, and fluid biomarkers that satisfy the requirements for objectivity, for semi- or quantitative measurements, and for uncomplicated, worldwide availability. Several novel techniques, such as automated compartmentalization of the brain into multiple parcels for the quantification of gray and white matter volumes on an individual basis and the visualization of α-synuclein and other candidate serum and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, may be promising for the early and clinically definitive diagnosis of MSA.

        전기이중층 캐패시터 상대전극을 활용한 전기변색소자의 순환안정성 향상

        일반적으로 전기변색소자들은 전기변색물질, 전해질 그리고 상대전극물질로 구성되어 있다. 그 중에서, 상대전극물질은 소자의 장기전환 안정성 및 낮은 작동 전압 등과 같은 전기변색소자들의 성능을 향상하는데 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 다이메틸 프탈레이트 기반 전기변색소자에 페로센과 카본 전극을 적용하고 그 성능을 테스트 하였다. 특히 카본 전극에서 우수한 장기전환 안정성이 구현되었다. Normally, electrochromic devices (ECDs) consist of EC materials, an electrolyte, and counter electrode materials. The counter material is essential for improving ECD properties such as long-term switching stability and low voltage operation. In this paper, we used and compared the counter materials of ferrocene and carbon electrode for the dimethyl terephthalate-based ECD, and the long-term switching stability was achieved with carbon electrode.

      • A Synthesis Method of General Floating-Point Arithmetic Units by Aligned Partition

        Floating-point arithmetic units (FPU) have paramount importance in applications that involve intensive mathematic operations. However, previous implementations of FPU either require much manual work or only support special functions (e.g. reciprocal, square root, logarithm, etc.). In this paper, we present an automatic method to synthesize general FPU by aligned partition. Based on the novel partition algorithm, our method supports functions of wide, irreducible domain. The synthesized FPU achieves smaller area, higher frequency, and greater accuracy. Experimental results show that our method obtains 1) on average 90% smaller and 2.1 times faster indexer than the conventional automatic method; 2) on the hyperbolic functions, 20k times smaller error rate and 50% use of LUTs and flip-flops than the conventional manual design.

        Angiopoietin-Like Protein 2 Induces Synovial Inflammation in the Facet Joint Leading to Degenerative Changes via Interleukin-6 Secretion

        Study Design: Experimental human study. Purpose: To determine whether angiopoietin-like protein 2 (ANGPTL2) is highly expressed in the hyperplastic facet joint (FJ) synovium and whether it activates interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion in FJ synoviocytes. Overview of Literature: Mechanical stress-induced synovitis is partially, but significantly, responsible for degenerative and subsequently osteoarthritic changes in the FJ tissues in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. IL-6 is highly expressed in degenerative FJ synovial tissue and is responsible for local chronic inflammation. ANGPTL2, an inflammatory and mechanically induced mediator, promotes the expression of IL-6 in many cells. Methods: FJ tissues were harvested from five patients who had undergone lumbar surgery. Immunohistochemistry for ANGPTL2, IL-6, and cell markers was performed in the FJ tissue samples. After cultured synoviocytes from the FJ tissues were subjected to mechanical stress, ANGPTL2 expression and secretion were measured quantitatively using real-time quantitative reverse-transcription–polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. Following ANGPTL2 administration in the FJ synoviocytes, anti-nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation was investigated using immunocytochemistry, and IL-6 expression and secretion were assayed quantitatively with or without NF-κB inhibitor. Moreover, we assessed whether ANGPTL2-induced IL-6 modulates leucocyte recruitment in the degenerative process by focusing on the monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) expression. Results: ANGPTL2 and IL-6 were highly expressed in the hyperplastic FJ synovium samples. ANGPTL2 was co-expressed in both, fibroblast-like and macrophage-like synoviocytes. Further, the expression and secretion of ANGPTL2 in the FJ synoviocytes increased in response to stimulation by mechanical stretching. ANGPTL2 protein promoted the nuclear translocation of NF-κB and induced IL-6 expression and secretion in the FJ synoviocytes. This effect was reversed following treatment with NF-κB inhibitor. Furthermore, ANGPTL2-induced IL-6 upregulated the MCP-1 expression in the FJ synoviocytes. Conclusions: Mechanical stress-induced ANGPTL2 promotes chronic inflammation in the FJ synovium by activating IL-6 secretion, leading to FJ degeneration and subsequent LSS.

      • Evaluation of Introducing Multiple Time-multiplexing Degrees to Inter-FPGA Connections on Multi-FPGA Systems

        In this paper, we deal with the optimization of inter-FPGA connections on multi-FPGA systems. To verify the logic functions of a huge circuit on a multi-FPGA system, the target circuit is often partitioned into sub-circuits to fit the capacity of an FPGA of the multi-FPGA system. In such cases, the number of signals between FPGAs tends to exceed the number of wires between FPGAs. To accommodate the inter-FPGA signals, time-multiplexed (TM) wire technique has been introduced into multi-FPGA systems. In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of introducing multiple time-multiplexing degrees to TM wires. We simultaneously use more than two types of TM wires each of which has a different time-multiplexing degree. In the experiment, we confirmed that time-multiplexing with multiple time-multiplexing degrees outperforms the one with a single time-multiplexing degree.
