On Cultural Identity Construction in David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish
( Xie¸ Bin ),( Kim¸ Taehyung ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2021 영어권문화연구 Vol.14 No.2
This study aims to interpret the construction of cultural identity in David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish from the perspective of Homi Bhabha’s cultural translation theory. Cultural translation signifies a strategy of cultural survival, aiming to give each unique language tradition or cultural text its own space. In the play, the playwright displays the ambivalence of the collision between Chinese and Western cultures through the performance of the protagonist Daniel on the Chinese cultural phenomenon “guanxi,” ensuring the likelihood of cultural negotiation. Using hybrid strategies with the protagonists’ languages, cultures, and identities, the playwright undermines stereotypes of the East held by the West and successfully overthrows the hegemonic position of the colonialist culture. Furthermore, through intercultural negotiation and hybridity, each language tradition or cultural text acquires its own living space and creates new meanings in the Third Space, thereby creating a new cultural identity.
A Riddle in Stone: Identifying a Plinth of Yangling Mausoleum 陽陵
XIE,Bo 영남퇴계학연구원 2020 The Journal of Toegye Studies Vol.3 No.2
The archaeological investigation of Yangling started in the 1970s. By now, much more has been written about Han burial system and burial objects. A large number of excavations are valuable to the investigations of Western Han society that covers such realms as politics, economy, military and culture. Furthermore, they are also of great significance in the study of art history. However, the topic of this paper is about a stone selected from numerous unearthed cultural relics. For all the investigations on the basis of archaeological reports of Yangling, the focus on this stone is less than those of the burial system of Western Han and excavated objects from the angle of art history. The stone was recorded as Luojing shi 羅經石 in written form for the first time in the stele to memorize the significant archaeological discovery in 1997. In two of the most important archaeological reports, Pelorus is employed as its English translation. Both the Chinese name and English translation of the stone seemingly imply that the stone was placed in the site of Yangling to confirm the directions. However, it is not a generally accepted conclusion. This article aims to answer the riddle in the Stone in Yangling Mausoleum with more certainty. All previous studies and increasing accessible archaeological data make it possible to conduct a more comprehensive investigation of the nature and function of the Stone and the architecture inside which the Stone was placed. Compared to other speculations, I am more inclined to suggest that the Stone is a central plinth of a Mingtang style ritual architecture in Yangling. Therefore, I prefer to rename it as Plinth of Yangling 陽陵柱礎 rather than Luojing shi 羅經石, which is too misleading.

Xie, Fazhi,Hu, Tingting,Oh, Won-Chun,Sheng, Dandan,Li, Haibin,Wang, Xuechun,Xie, Zhiyong,Li, Guolian,Han, Xuan,Xie, Wenjie,Sun, Mei Materials Research Society of Korea 2017 한국재료학회지 Vol.27 No.3
Removal of phosphate from environmental water has become more important to prevent eutrophication. In the present study, sorption behavior of phosphate onto magnesite was investigated under different conditions. The optimum pH of phosphate adsorption was determined to be 6.0. The adsorption capacity was found to decrease with increasing temperature, which indicates that a low temperature was beneficial for phosphate adsorption. The sorption capacity for phosphate was found to be 10.2 mg/g at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L and a dose of 2 g/L. The first order kinetic equation and Freundlich isotherm model fit the data well. Phosphate adsorption on magnesite was explained by electrostatic attraction and weak physical interactions.

Purpose: To examine the economic effects of logistics under the influence of policies. Research design, data and methodology: This study is the first to use the panel data of 31 provinces and municipalities in China from 2012 to 2021, and use the OLS and DID models to evaluate whether the New Western Land-Sea Corridor (NWLSC) has promoted the economic development of the regions along the corridor. Results: The NWLSC has stimulated local economic growth by promoting the development of transportation, postal, and telecommunications industries along the corridor. Further, considering the locational differences of the regions along the NWLSC, we examined the differences in economic effects between regions along the Yangtze River and those not along the Yangtze River under the background of NWLSC implementation. We found that waterway and airway transport located along the NWLSC and in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) region can significantly promote economic growth. However, for regions located along the NWLSC but not in the YREB region, the impact of roadway, railway, and airway transport in these regions on economic growth is more significant. Conclusions: This study has important reference value on how to use logistics to promote the economic and cross-border commerce development of landlocked countries or regions.
Impact of playout buffer dynamics on the QoE of wireless adaptive HTTP progressive video
Xie, Guannan,Chen, Huifang,Yu, Fange,Xie, Lei Electronics and Telecommunications Research Instit 2021 ETRI Journal Vol.43 No.3
The quality of experience (QoE) of video streaming is degraded by playback interruptions, which can be mitigated by the playout buffers of end users. To analyze the impact of playout buffer dynamics on the QoE of wireless adaptive hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) progressive video, we model the playout buffer as a G/D/1 queue with an arbitrary packet arrival rate and deterministic service time. Because all video packets within a block must be available in the playout buffer before that block is decoded, playback interruption can occur even when the playout buffer is non-empty. We analyze the queue length evolution of the playout buffer using diffusion approximation. Closed-form expressions for user-perceived video quality are derived in terms of the buffering delay, playback duration, and interruption probability for an infinite buffer size, the packet loss probability and re-buffering probability for a finite buffer size. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and reveal that the impact of playout buffer dynamics on QoE is content dependent, which can contribute to the design of QoE-driven wireless adaptive HTTP progressive video management.

Human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hPSC-CMs) have great potential in applications such as regenerative medicine, cardiac disease modeling, and in vitro drug evaluation. However, hPSC-CMs are immature, which limits their applications. During development, the maturation of CMs is accompanied by a decline in their proliferative capacity. This phenomenon suggests that regulating the cell cycle may facilitate the maturation of hPSC-CMs. Aurora kinases are essential kinases that regulate the cell cycle, the role of which is not well studied in hPSC-CM maturation. Here, we demonstrate that CYC116, an inhibitor of Aurora kinases, significantly promotes the maturation of CMs derived from both human embryonic stem cells (H1 and H9) and iPSCs (induced PSCs) (UC013), resulting in increased expression of genes related to cardiomyocyte function, better organization of the sarcomere, increased sarcomere length, increased number of mitochondria, and enhanced physiological function of the cells. In addition, a number of other Aurora kinase inhibitors have also been found to promote the maturation of hPSC-CMs. Our data suggest that blocking aurora kinase activity and regulating cell cycle progression may promote the maturation of hPSC-CMs.

Panax notoginseng. Research has shown that Rg1 has a protective effect on the cardiovascular system, includinganti-myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, anti-apoptosis, and promotion of myocardial angiogenesis, suggestingit a potential cardiovascular agent. However, the protective mechanism involved is still not fullyunderstood. Methods: Based on network pharmacology, ligand-based protein docking, proteomics, Western blot, proteinrecombination and spectroscopic analysis (UV–Vis and fluorescence spectra) techniques, potential targets andpathways for Rg1 against myocardial ischemia (MI) were screened and explored. Results: An important target set containing 19 proteins was constructed. Two target proteins with more favorablebinding activity for Rg1 against MI were further identified by molecular docking, including mitogen-activatedprotein kinase 1 (MAPK1) and adenosine kinase (ADK). Meanwhile, Rg1 intervention on H9c2 cells injured byH2O2 showed an inhibitory oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway. The inhibition of Rg1 on MAPK1 andOXPHOS pathway was confirmed by Western blot assay. By protein recombination and spectroscopic analysis, the binding reaction between ADK and Rg1 was also evaluated. Conclusion: Rg1 can effectively alleviate cardiomyocytes oxidative stress injury via targeting MAPK1 and ADK,and inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway. The present study provides scientific basis for theclinical application of the natural active ingredient, Rg1, and also gives rise to a methodological reference to thesearching of action targets and pathways of other natural active ingredients.
