The Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Signal Transduction Pathways in Alternaria Species

        Xu, Houjuan,Xu, Xiaoxue,Wang, Yu-Jun,Bajpai, Vivek K.,Huang, Lisha,Chen, Yongfang,Baek, Kwang-Hyun The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2012 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.28 No.3

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are conserved signaling modules in the eukaryotic cells. They are involved in many major cell processes in fungi such as stress responses, vegetative growth, pathogenicity, secondary metabolism and cell wall integrity. In this review, we summarized the advances of research on the MAPK signaling pathways in Alternaria species. As major phytopathogenic fungi, Alternaria species reduce crop production. In contrast to the five MAPK pathways known in yeast, only three MAPK pathways as Fus3/Kss1-type, Hog1-type, and Slt2-type have been characterized in Alternaria. The Fus3/Kss1-type MAPK pathway participates in regulation of vegetative growth, conidiation, production of some cell-wall-degrading enzymes and pathogenicity. The Hog1-type pathway is involved in osmotic and oxidative stress, fungicides susceptibility and pathogenicity. The Slt2-type MAP kinases play an important role on maintaining cell wall integrity, pathogenicity and conidiation. Although recent advances on the MAPK pathways in Alternaria spp. reveal many important features on the pathogenicity, there are many unsolved problems regarding to the unknown MAP kinase cascade components and network among other major signal transduction. Considering the economic loss induced by Alternaria spp., more researches on the MAPK pathways will need to control the Alternaria diseases.

L-lysine and L-arginine inhibit the oxidation of lipids and proteins of emulsion sausage by chelating iron ion and scavenging radical

        Xu, Peng,Zheng, Yadong,Zhu, Xiaoxu,Li, Shiyi,Zhou, Cunliu Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.6

Objective: To evaluate the effects of L-lysine (Lys)/L-arginine (Arg) on lipid and protein oxidation of emulsion sausage during storage and its possible mechanism. Methods: Four samples were prepared based on the presence or absence of additional sodium isoascorbate, Lys, or Arg: sample A (control), sample B (0.05 g of sodium isoascorbate), sample C (0.4 g of Lys), and sample D (0.4 g of Arg). Peroxide value (POV), thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS), protein carbonyls and thiols were measured. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical-scavenging, ferrous ion-chelating ability were also measured. Results: Compared with the control, the sample treated with sodium isoascorbate, Lys or Arg had significantly lower POV during the initial 20 days, TBARS during the initial 15 days. Protein carbonyls were significantly lower compared Sample B, C, and D with A during the later storage (10 to 25 days); basically, protein thiols became lower during storage when the samples were treated with sodium isoascorbate, Lys, or Arg. Both Lys and Arg had weak reducing power but strong ferrous ion-chelating activity and DPPH radical- and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity. Conclusion: Both Lys and Arg effectively inhibited the oxidation of lipids and proteins in emulsion sausage by scavenging free radicals and chelating ferrous ions. The results obtained may be favorable for the prevention of lipid and protein oxidation during processing and storage of meat products.

The association between glaucoma and all-cause mortality in middle-aged and elderly Chinese people: results from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study

        Xiaoxu Huang,Mengqiao Xu,Minwen Zhou,Wenjia Liu,Xiaohuan Zhao,Xiaodong Sun 한국역학회 2023 Epidemiology and Health Vol.45 No.-

OBJECTIVES: This population-based, prospective cohort study investigated the association between glaucoma and mortality in older adults. METHODS: Participants aged 45 years or older at baseline (47.9% male) were enrolled in 2011 for the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). All-cause mortality was observed during 7 years of follow-up. The baseline data were collected in the 2011 CHARLS, and participants were followed up for 7 years (until 2018). The risk of all-cause mortality was investigated using Cox proportional-hazards regression with age as the time scale, adjusting for significant risk factors and comorbid conditions. RESULTS: Among the 14,803 participants included, the risk of all-cause death was significantly higher among people with glaucoma than among those without glaucoma, after adjustment for other confounders (hazard ratio [HR], 1.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04 to 2.03). In a subgroup analysis based on the mean age of death, among those who were 75 years and older (n=1,231), the risk of all-cause death was significantly higher in patients with glaucoma than in those without glaucoma (HR, 1.89; 95% CI, 1.24 to 1.89). CONCLUSIONS: Participants with glaucoma had a higher risk of all-cause mortality, especially those aged 75 years and above. Our findings revealed potential mechanisms underlying an association between glaucoma and all-cause mortality. They also highlighted the importance of glaucoma management to prevent premature death in middle-aged and older adults.

Enhancing the Adsorption Capacity of Hematite by Manganese Doping: Facile Synthesis and its Application in the Removal of Congo Red

        Huaifen Su,Xiaoxue Wang,Yuanwei Sun,Dan Xu,Lei Li,Caihua Liu,Suyuan Zeng,Dezhi Sun 대한화학회 2017 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.38 No.10

This work aims to provide a facile method for the preparation of Mn-doped hematite microrods and reveals the relationship between Mn doping and the enhanced adsorption properties. The adsorption performance of hematite could be greatly enhanced by Mn doping. The maximal adsorption capacity of the Mn-doped α-Fe2O3 is calculated to be 84.54 mg/g, which exhibits obviously enhanced adsorption capacity as compared to the un-doped α-Fe2O3 (33.02 mg/g). To further understand the adsorption process, the adsorption kinetic as well as thermodynamic behaviors are carefully investigated. The results suggest that the adsorption process of CR onto the adsorbents follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Meanwhile, the adsorption process can be designated to be a Langmuir process. The adsorption capacities of CR vary as a function of Mn contents, which are regarded as the synergistic effect between surface areas and pore sizes.

      • Molecular Beam Epitaxy of Highly Crystalline Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide on Hexagonal Boron Nitride

        Fu, Deyi,Zhao, Xiaoxu,Zhang, Yu-Yang,Li, Linjun,Xu, Hai,Jang, A-Rang,Yoon, Seong In,Song, Peng,Poh, Sock Mui,Ren, Tianhua,Ding, Zijing,Fu, Wei,Shin, Tae Joo,Shin, Hyeon Suk,Pantelides, Sokrates T.,Zho American Chemical Society 2017 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.139 No.27

Atomically thin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a direct-band-gap semiconductor, is promising for applications in electronics and optoelectronics, but the scalable synthesis of highly crystalline film remains challenging. Here we report the successful epitaxial growth of a continuous, uniform, highly crystalline monolayer MoS2 film on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) by molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic force microscopy and electron microscopy studies reveal that MoS2 grown on h-BN primarily consists of two types of nucleation grains (0 aligned and 60 degrees antialigned domains). By adopting a high growth temperature and ultralow precursor flux, the formation of 60 degrees antialigned grains is largely suppressed. The resulting perfectly aligned grains merge seamlessly into a highly crystalline film. Large-scale monolayer MoS2 film can be grown on a 2 in. h-BN/sapphire wafer, for which surface morphology and Raman mapping confirm good spatial uniformity. Our study represents a significant step in the scalable synthesis of highly crystalline MoS2 films on atomically flat surfaces and paves the way to large-scale applications.

Preparation and Drug Release Behavior of Tussah Silk Fibroin Composite Membrane

        Zhuang Hu,Kaixia An,Jia Wang,Xiaoxu Xu,Zhangpei Chen,Jianshe Hu,Liqun Yang 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.2

Silk fibroin (SF) aqueous solution was obtained by the degumming and dissolution of tussah silk, and then the obtained solution was chemically cross-linked with sodium alginate (SA) to form composite membrane, which could be used as a carrier for sustained drug release. The mechanical properties and dissolution rate of such composite membrane togetherwith the drug release behavior under different conditions were investigated. A series of structure-tunable composite membranes were prepared through altering the ingredients proportion, the pH value during fabrication, the concentration of Ca2+, and cross-linking time. The drug release behavior of the corresponding drug-loaded composite membrane was elaborate studied using artemisinin as the model drug. It was found that the drug release rate exhibited a decreasing trend with increasing the SF content, the Ca2+ concentration and the cross-linking time of the corresponding composite membrane. Moreover, the drug release behavior exhibited pH sensitivity, and the drug release rate could be promoted under weak alkaline conditions.
