        Opposite Effects of Vitamin C and Vitamin E on the Antifungal Activity of Honokiol

        The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of two well-known natural antioxidants, vitamin C (VC) and vitamin E (VE), on the antifungal activity of honokiol against Candida albicans. The broth microdilution method was employed to test the antifungal activities of honokiol with or without antioxidants in the medium against C. albicans strain. Intracellular reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation were determined by fluorescence staining assay. Mitochondrial dysfunction was assessed by detecting the mitochondrial DNA and the mitochondrial membrane potential. We observed that VC could significantly potentiate the antifungal activities of honokiol while VE reduced the effectiveness of honokiol against C. albicans. In addition, VC accelerated honokiol-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and inhibited glycolysis leading to a decrease in cellular ATP. However, VE could protect against mitochondrial membrane lipid peroxidation and rescue mitochondrial function after honokiol treatment. Our research provides new insight into the understanding of the action mechanism of honokiol and VC combination against C. albicans.

        Surgical Options for Appropriate Length of J-Pouch Construction for Better Outcomes and Long-term Quality of Life in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis after Ileal Pouch-Anal Anastomosis

        Background/Aims: Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is widely accepted as a radical surgery for refractory ulcerative colitis (UC). Definite results on the appropriate pouch length for an evaluation of the risk-to-benefit ratio regarding technical complications and long-term quality of life (QOL) are still scarce. Methods: Data on UC patients who underwent IPAA from 2008 to 2022 in four well-established pouch centers affiliated to China UC Pouch Center Union were collected. Results: A total of 208 patients with a median follow-up time of 6.0 years (interquartile range, 2.3 to 9.0 years) were enrolled. The median lengths of the patients’ short and long pouches were 14.0 cm (interquartile range, 14.0 to 15.0 cm) and 22.0 cm (interquartile range, 20.0 to 24.0 cm), respectively. Patients with a short J pouch configuration were less likely to achieve significantly improved long-term QOL (p=0.015) and were prone to develop late postoperative complications (p=0.042), such as increased defecation frequency (p=0.003) and pouchitis (p=0.035). A short ileal pouch was an independent risk factor for the development of late postoperative complications (odds ratio, 3.100; 95% confidence interval, 1.519 to 6.329; p=0.002) and impaired long-term QOL improvement (odds ratio, 2.221; 95% confidence interval, 1.218 to 4.050, p=0.009). Conclusions: The length of the J pouch was associated with the improvement in long-term QOL and the development of late post-IPAA complications. A long J pouch configuration could be a considerable surgical option for pouch construction.

        Effects of feeding pipe diameter on the performance of a jet-driven Helmholtz oscillator generating pulsed waterjets

        Self-excited oscillation pulsed waterjet (SOPW) can take advantage of water hammer effect by generating discrete water slugs with large pressure oscillations. To further improve its efficiency, the performance of a jet-driven Helmholtz oscillator generating SOPWs was experimentally studied with feeding pipe diameter being considered. The axial pressure oscillations of the jets against the chamber length and standoff distance under four pump pressures were analyzed. It was found that feeding pipe diameter greatly affects the pressure oscillations. This dramatically depends on the pump pressure and is mainly caused by the wave and acoustic interactions in the oscillator. Feeding pipe which induces the maximum peak is the one that results in the minimum amplitude, and vice versa. Moreover, feeding pipe of diameter of 25 mm makes the amplitude fluctuate more violently at lower pump pressures. Further investigations related to the interactions of feeding pipe, hydroacoustic waves, and vorticities in shear layer should be performed.

        An experimental investigation on the pressure characteristics of high speed self-resonating pulsed waterjets influenced by feeding pipe diameter

        The destructive power of a continuous waterjet issuing from a nozzle can be greatly enhanced by generating self-resonance in the nozzle assembly to produce a Self-resonating pulsed waterjet (SRPW). To further improve the performance of SRPW, effects of feeding pipe diameter on the pressure characteristics were experimentally investigated by measuring and analyzing the axial pressure oscillation peaks and amplitudes. Four organ-pipe nozzles of different chamber lengths and three feeding pipes of different diameters were employed. Results show that feeding pipe diameter cannot change the feature of SRPW of having an optimum standoff distance, but it slightly changes the oscillating frequency of the jet. It is also found that feeding pipe diameter significantly affects the magnitudes of pressure oscillation peak and amplitude, largely depending on the pump pressure and standoff distance. The enhancement or attenuation of the pressure oscillation peak and amplitude can be differently affected by the same feeding pipe diameter.

        Enhancing densification and electrical properties of KNN-based lead-free ceramics via two-step sintering

        0.95(Li 0.02 Na 0.50 K 0.48 )(Nb 0.95 Sb 0.05 )O 3 -0.05AgTaO 3 (0.95LNKNS-0.05AT) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by conventional ceramic processing via the two-step sintering process (abbreviated as TSS). The influences of sintering condi- tions in the first stage of the TSS process on densification, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of the 0.95LNKNS-0.05AT ceramics prepared by the TSS were deeply studied. By introducing TSS for preparing the 0.95LNKNS-0.05AT ceramics, the volatilization of alkali metal elements can be decreased and all the 0.95LNKNS-0.05AT ceramics show high densifica- tion. By optimizing the T 1 sintering temperature and t 1 holding time in the first stage of the TSS, the relative permittivity of the 0.95LNKNS-0.05AT ceramics sintered at 1140 °C for 0.5 h and 1050 °C for 8 h is increased to 5957 at 1 kHz, while the relative permittivity of the 0.95LNKNS-0.05AT ceramics prepared by the conventional sintering method (abbreviated as CS) is only 5205. The d 33 , g 33 , and K p values are increased from 134 pC/N, 14.6 × 10 –3  Vm/N, and 17.4% to 224 pC/N, 25.5 × 10 –3  Vm/N, and 31.9%, respectively. The 0.95LNKNS-0.05AT ceramics exhibit thermal activation relaxation behav- ior, and the high-temperature Cole–Cole impedance performance can be fitted well by the equivalent circuit (RQC) and equivalent circuit (RC) connected in series. The space charge effect conforms to the Arrhenius relationship, which presents a thermally activated hopping type process and relates to the oxygen vacancies generated by the evaporation of alkali metals during the TSS process.

        Preparation and properties of Nd-doped BCTH lead-free ceramics by solid-phase twin crystal method

        0.5 mol% Nd-doped (Ba0.85Ca0.15)(Ti0.9Hf0.1)O3 (BCTH-Nd) lead-free ceramics were prepared by a solid-phase twin crystal method, where the effects of sintering condition on structure, electrical and optical properties were studied. All the sintered BCTH-Nd ceramics exhibit pure perovskite structure, dense microstructure with several micron grain size, which tends to increase with elevating sintering temperature. All synthesized ceramics have complex dielectric behavior, which presents normal ferroelectrics characteristic with slight dispersion phenomenon. The BCTH-Nd ceramics exhibit excellent piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties and acceptable dielectric performance when sintered at 1480 ◦C for 2 h. Under 269 nm light excitation, several fluorescent emission peaks are excited with a whole indigo fluorescence, where the strongest emission peak is emitted at 473 nm, corresponding to the 4G3/2 → 4I9/2 energy level transition of Nd3+. Multifunctional performance is fulfilled in the lead-free BCTH ceramics via rare earth doping, which can broaden the application fields of piezoelectricbased materials.

        Preparation and Self-Healing Behaviors of Poly(acrylic acid)/Cerium Ions Double Network Hydrogels

        This work aims at developing an approach to poly(acrylic acid)/cerium ions (PAA/cerium ions) double network hydrogels and exploring the self-healing properties of the hydrogels, with expectation to provide some clues for constructing new healable gel actuators and enrich the family of self-healable hydrogels. The hydrogel is covalently crosslinked by a traditional crosslinking agent N,N'-methylene bis-acrylamide to form the first network and further physically crosslinked by the ionic interaction between cerium ions and the carboxyl groups in the hydrogel network. The preparation method and self-healing behaviors of the hydrogels are investigated.
