        Interaction and micellar behavior of ternary mixture of amphoteric amino sulfonate surfactant with traditional anionic and nonionic surfactants: Effect of hydrophilicity

        The micellization and the molecular interaction behaviors for two ternary mixtures constituted by anamphoteric sodium 3-(n-dodecyl ethylenediamino)-2-hydroxypropyl sulfonate (C12AS), an anionicsodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and a nonionic octylphenol polyoxyethylated ether with thenumber (n) of oxyethylene glycol ethers OP-n (n = 10 or 7) in aqueous solution were investigated usingthe tensiometry and the effect of hydrophilicity on them was also discussed. In the framework of pseudophaseseparation model and based on the regular solution theory, the related micellization parametersincluding the mixed critical micelle concentration (cmc) values in the ideal and real cases, the activitycoefficients and the compositions in mixed micelle, etc. and thermodynamic parameters were estimatedby the Clint’s model and the Rubingh’ model. The mixed cmc value is dependent on the composition inaqueous solution and influenced by the hydrophilicity of nonionic surfactant. With increasing the nonionicin ternary mixture, the mixed cmc value is initially decreased and then slightly rise. An increasingin the hydrophilicity of nonionic will make the minimum value of mixed cmc be increased from1.299 mM to 1.705 mM. The resulting phenomena can be explained reasonably by the electrostatic effect,the steric hindrance, the hydrogen bonding, etc. Thermodynamic data indicate that the contribution ofentropy or enthalpy plays a vital role on the spontaneous process of micellization and the share ofentropy or enthalpy in free energy change is dependent largely on the amount of nonionic surfactantand the hydrophilicity. In ternary mixtures of C12AS/SDBS/OP-10, an increase in an amount of OP-10 willinduce the change from the enthalpy-driven micellization process to the entropically favorable process. Once an abundant amount of OP-7 is added, while, the enthalpy will make a main contribution on themicellization process, which can be described by the drop in the share of entropy at the composition(0.6970/0.0000/0.3030) of ternary mixture from 0.6478 to 0.4901. These findings will help with understandingthe molecular interaction behavior for the ternary surfactant mixture and the effect of the additionof nonionic surfactant and its hydrophilicity.

        Seroprevalence of Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Toxoplasma gondii in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in China

        The breeding of domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) for human consumption has a long tradition in China. Infections that can affect the production of meat or even be transmitted from animals to humans are important to monitor, especially for public health reasons as well as for their impact on animal health. Thus, a total of 1,132 domestic rabbit sera from 4 regions in China were collected for serological screening for Encephalitozoon cuniculi and for Toxoplasma gondii by ELISA and modified agglutination test (MAT), respectively. Antibodies to E. cuniculi were detected in 248/1,132 (21.9%) sera tested while antibodies against T. gondii revealed a seroprevalence of 51/1,132 (4.5%). We believe that the present results are of epidemiological implications and public health importance due to the acknowledged susceptibility of humans to E. cuniculi and T. gondii infections. Therefore, routine screening tests of domestic rabbits are proposed considering the zoonotic potential of these parasites.

      • Epidemiology of Esophageal Cancer in Yanting - Regional Report of a National Screening Programme in China

        Background and Objectives: Yanting in Sichuan Province is one of the highest risk areas of esophageal cancer (EC) in the world. We here summarize the epidemiology of EC in Yanting using data from the national screening programme during 2006-2011. Methods: Random cluster sampling was used to select a proportion of natural villages from six towns in Yanting, and residents aged 40-69 years old were invited for screening. Participants were screened using endoscopy with iodine staining and then confirmed by histological examinations. Results: The overall detection rates of low-grade hyperplasia (LH), moderate hyperplasia (MH), high-grade hyperplasia (HH), carcinoma in situ (CIS), intramucosal carcinoma (IC) and invasive carcinoma (INC) were 5.33%, 1.28%, 0.68%, 0.15%, 0.06% and 0.29%, respectively. The detection rates of LH, MH, HH and INC increased with age, reaching the peak among those aged 60-65 years, and the prevalences of LH and MH were higher among men than among women. In addition, the detection rates of hyperplasia were much higher in mountainous than in hilly areas. Conclusions: Among the high risk population, there are a great number of people with early-stage EC or precancerous conditions who do not have presenting symptoms. In particular, the elderly, men, or those living in mountainous areas are the most vulnerable population. It is therefore important to reinforce health education and screening services among such high risk populations.

      • Detection of Building in Natural Images with one New Discriminative Random Fields

        This paper presents a new Discriminative Random Fields (DRFs) framework. Based on the DRFs framework proposed by Kumar and Hebert, the following improvements have been conducted. Firstly, the interaction potential and the associated potential model are simplified. Secondly, we reduce the dimension of the multi-scale features, re-definedimension of the single-scale feature, and increase the color feature of Building. Thirdly,the quasi-Newton method with linear search and gradient descent method are adopted to solve parameters, whichget a simple model and achieve good performance. Finally, the partition function of the DRF is eliminatedby using Pseudo-likelihood method for parameter learning. The simulation results show thatthe proposed method’s false positive rate is lower than the method from Kumar and Hebert, while the correct rate and detection ratearehigher than their experimental effects after these improvements.

      • Neutrophil Count and the Inflammation-based Glasgow Prognostic Score Predict Survival in Patients with Advanced Gastric Cancer Receiving First-line Chemotherapy

        Purpose: To explore the value of systemic inflammatory markers as independent prognostic factors and the extent these markers improve prognostic classification for patients with inoperable advanced or metastatic gastric cancer (GC) receiving palliative chemotherapy. Methods: We studied the prognostic value of systemic inflammatory factors such as circulating white blood cell count and its components as well as that combined to form inflammation-based prognostic scores (Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS), Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR), Platelet Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR), Prognostic Index (PI) and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI)) in 384 patients with inoperable advanced or metastatic gastric cancer (GC) receiving first-line chemotherapy. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to examine the impact of inflammatory markers on overall survival (OS). Results: Univariate analysis revealed that an elevated white blood cell, neutrophil and/or platelet count, a decreased lymphocyte count, a low serum albumin concentration, and high CRP concentration, as well as elevated NLR/PLR, GPS, PI, PNI were significant predictors of shorter OS. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that only elevated neutrophil count (HR 3.696, p=0.003) and higher GPS (HR 1.621, p=0.01) were independent predictors of poor OS. Conclusion: This study demonstrated elevated pretreatment neutrophil count and high GPS to be independent predictors of shorter OS in inoperable advanced or metastatic GC patients treated with first-line chemotherapy. Upon validation of these data in independent studies, stratification of patients using these markers in future clinical trials is recommended.

      • 학습자 자기주도 학습에 영향을 미치는 사회문화요인과 시사점 - 외국어학습자 중심

        This study bases on sociocultural theory of Lev Vygotsky, to explore the relationship between the learners’ autonomous learning and sociocultural environment. In order to explore the relationship between them, we set up three questions: firstly, what are the positive sociocultural environment factors to learners’ autonomous learning? Secondly, what are the negative sociocultural factors to learners’ autonomous learning? Thirdly, what are the inspirations for the educators to make full use of the positive sociocultural environment, and as far as possible to exclude the negative sociocultural factors that interfere with learners’ autonomous learning. A total of 102 students of two grade of English, Korean and Japanese major in three universities in Weifang, Shandong Province, China, were selected for the survey, and 10 professors and 20 students were interviewed. The results show that there are three beneficial sociocultural factors influencing learners’ autonomous learning. First, the emphasis on collectivism and mutual learning in the Oriental cultural circle. Second, the attitude of the authority of teachers. Third, by the impact of Western culture, learners improve their sense of autonomy. There are four negative sociocultural factors that affect learners autonomous learning. First, the traditional concept of teacher authority and conflicts of students to raise awareness of self-contradictions. Second, the teacher-centered traditional teaching concepts and teaching patterns. Third, the erroneous ideas of teachers’ self-development as the center. Fourth, attention to the examination and certification of the wrong ideas. Educators should make full use of good for learners’ autonomous learning of the sociocultural environment factors, eliminate the factors that influence and interfere with the learners’ autonomy, and giving guidance to the students. 본 연구는 Lev Vygotsky의 사회문화이론을 이론적인 배경을 삼고 학습자 자기주도 학습은 사회문화 환경요인과 어떤 관계가 있을 것인가를 탐색하기 위하여 첫 번째는 학습자 자기주도 학습에 유익한 사회문화요인이 무엇인지? 두 번째는 학습자 자기주도 학습에 불리한 사회문화요인이 무엇인지? 세 번째는 유익한 사회요인을 살리고 불리한 사회요인을 배제하는 데서 학교 교육자한테 어떤 시사점을 주었는지? 와 같은 연구문제를 설정하여 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구는 중국산동성 웨이팡시 지역 3개의 대학교의 영어, 한국어, 일본어 전공을 한 대학교 2학년 학생102명을 연구 대상로 설문하였다. 동시에 전문 교사10명, 학생20명과 따로 인터뷰를 하였다. 연구 결과는 학습자 자기주도에 유익한 사회문화요인은 3가지가 있다. 첫 번째는 동양문 화권이 강조하는 집단주의 의식이다. 두 번째는 교사권위에 대한 태도다. 세 번째는 서양문화영향을 받아 자기주도의식의 향상이다. 불리한 사회문화요인은 4가지가 있다. 첫 번째는 전통적인 교사권위 관념과 학생 자기주도의식 향상 간의 충돌이다. 두 번째는 교사가 교수중심의 전통적인 교수이념과 교수패턴이다. 세 번째는 교사가 자기발달 중심의 잘못된 사상관념이다. 넷 번째는 시험, 자격증 중요시하는 사상 관념이다. 교육현장에 있는 교육자들이 유익한 사회문화요인들을 살리고 불리한 사 회요인을 배제하는 것은 바람직한 교수행동이다.

        Establishment and Application of Target Gene Disruption System in Saccharomyces boulardii

        Saccharomyces boulardii is the best knownprobiotic yeast, widely used as a therapeutic agent for thetreatment or prevention of diarrhea and intestine disorders. In the present work, we established a target gene disruptionsystem for S. boulardii based on the Cre-loxP system usedfor S. cerevisiae and other fungi by screening out selectionmarkers, working out the transformation method, andconstructing essential plasmids for S. boulardii. Theestablished system was successfully applied to the URA3gene disruption and created an ura3 null mutant strain ofS. boulardii. The system can be used for PCR mediatedgene disruption, cloning mediated gene disruption, andreintroduction of the deleted gene back to the mutant. Allthe introduced exogenous DNAs in the gene disruptionprocedures were removed from the final mutant strainexcept the two 34 bp loxP pieces left in deleted gene loci.
