Background/Aims: To investigate the rate of detection of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in the synovial fluid (SF) of patients with acute gouty arthritis and factors associated with false-negative results. Methods: A total of 179 patients with acute gouty arthritis who had undergone SF crystal examination were identified from the data warehouse of two university hospitals. Clinical and laboratory data were obtained from the medical records. Results: The overall rate of detection of MSU crystals was 78.8%. In univariate analyses, the only significant differences between the variables of crystal-negative and crystal-positive patients were a lower C-reactive protein level (p = 0.040) and fewer patients undergoing emergent surgery in the crystal-positive group (p = 4.5 × 10-6). In logistic regression analyses, MSU crystal-negative results were significantly associated with the interval from arthritis onset to crystal examination (p = 0.042), and this was the most significant risk factor for arthroscopic surgery (p = 2.1 × 10-4). Seventeen patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery had a significantly longer hospital stay (p = 0.007) and a significant delay in gout treatment (p = 8.74 × 10-5). The distribution of crystal-negative patients differed significantly between the SF samples that were evaluated by both the laboratory medicine and the rheumatology departments (p = 1.2 × 10-14), and the κ value was 0.108. Conclusions: Although several clinical features were associated with detection failure, SF MSU crystal identification was critically dependent on the observer. Considering the impact on the treatment outcomes, implementation of a quality control program is essential.

The progression and exacerbation of liver fibrosis are closely related to the gut microbiome. It is hypothesized that some probiotics may slow the progression of liver fibrosis. In human stool analysis [healthy group (n = 44) and cirrhosis group (n = 18)], difference in Lactobacillus genus between healthy group and cirrhosis group was observed. Based on human data, preventive and therapeutic effect of probiotics Lactobacillus lactis and L. rhamnosus was evaluated by using four mice fibrosis models. L. lactis and L. rhamnosus were supplied to 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine or carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis C57BL/6 mouse model. Serum biochemical measurements, tissue staining, and mRNA expression in the liver were evaluated. The microbiome was analyzed in mouse cecal contents. In the mouse model, the effects of Lactobacillus in preventing and treating liver fibrosis were different for each microbe species. In case of L. lactis, all models showed preventive and therapeutic effects against liver fibrosis. In microbiome analysis in mouse models administered Lactobacillus, migration and changes in the ratio and composition of the gut microbial community were confirmed. L. lactis and L. rhamnosus showed preventive and therapeutic effects on the progression of liver fibrosis, suggesting that Lactobacillus intake may be a useful strategy for prevention and treatment.
An Unusual Clinical Presentation of Kimura`s Disease Occurring on the Buttock of a Five-year-old Boy
Won Jun Choi,Jae Hur,Joo Yeon Ko,Kwang Yeoll Yeo,Joung Soo Kim,Hee Joon Yu 대한피부과학회 2010 Annals of Dermatology Vol.22 No.1
Kimura`s disease is a rare inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology primarily seen in young Asian males. It is characterized by painless subcutaneous masses, blood and tissue eosinophilia, and markedly elevated serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. Clinically, the subcutaneous nodules occur predominantly in the head and neck. However, we report the case of a five-year-old boy presenting with an asymptomatic solitary brown pigmented nodule on the left buttock diagnosed with Kimura`s disease. Here we describe the diagnosis and treatment of this unusual case. (Ann Dermatol 22(1) 57∼60, 2010)
Performance Analysis of an Industrial Inkjet Printing Head Using the 1D Lumped Model
Won-Chul Sim,Sung-Jun Park,Jaewoo Joung 한국정밀공학회 2008 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.9 No.2
A design approach using a one-dimensional (1D) lumped model was studied and applied to an industrial inkjet printing head design for micro patterning on printed circuit boards. For an accurate analysis, a three-dimensional piezoelectric-driven actuator model was analyzed and its jetting characteristics were applied to 1 Danalysis model. The performance of the 1 D lumped model was verified by comparing measured and simulated results. The developed 1 D model helped to optimize the design and configuration of the inkjet head and could be implemented in the design of multi-nozzle inkjet printing heads to improve the jetting frequency and minimize crosstalk.

The objective of this study was to evaluate several types of uterine bacteria in Hanwoo. uterine bacteria from randomly selected 5 uterus was collected by flushing methods into a sterilized 1.5 ml centrifuge tube and was inoculated onto MacConkey agar and blood agar, respectively. After being incubated for 5% CO2, aerobic or anaerobic condition at 37℃ during 48h, bacterial colonies were selected and re-inoculated onto blood agar plates. Re-cultured colonies were identified by Gram staining and finally identified using Vitek system. The identified bacteria were Staphylococcus lentus, Staphylococcus sciuri, Staphylococcus vitulinus, Staphylococcus warneri of Gram (+) and Rhizobium radiobacter, Sphingomonas paucimobilis of Gram () bacteria. Although, pathogenicity of identified bacteria was unclear, the bacteria can have an effect on the uterine microenvironment. Therefore, repetitive research will be required to determine the effects of bacteria in cattle exposed to a various environment.

<P>Four known alkyl 4-hydroxybenzoates, i.e., methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (1), ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (2), propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (3), and butyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (4), were isolated from the seeds of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner (Nymphaeaceae) for the first time. The structures of the isolates were identified by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy and comparison with published values. The compounds were evaluated for their effects on the 5-HT-stimulated inward current (I5-HT) mediated by the human 5-HT3A receptors expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Compounds 1 and 2 enhanced the I5-HT, but 4 reduced it. These results indicate that 4 is an inhibitor of the 5-HT3A receptors expressed in Xenopus oocytes.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P> <img src='wiley_img_2010/16121872-2010-7-9-CBDV200900393-content.gif' alt='wiley_img_2010/16121872-2010-7-9-CBDV200900393-content'> </P>

A resorbable barrier membrane is commonly used for the repair of perforated sinus membranes during sinus lifting surgeries. However, repairing largescale perforations poses challenges for clinicians as the protection and isolation of graft material remain uncertain. With this technique, we aimed to prevent graft material loss and subsequent sinus-related complications using intra-sinus rigid fixation of the resorbable barrier membrane in cases with a large perforation of the sinus membrane.
