Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), an aggressive malignant tumor of mesothelial origin associated with asbestos exposure, shows a limited response to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Therefore, the overall survival of MPM patients remains very poor. Progress in the development of therapeutic strategies for MPM has been limited. We recently reported that the calpain inhibitor, calpeptin exerted inhibitory effects on pulmonary fibrosis by inhibiting the proliferation of lung fibroblasts. In the present study, we examined the preventive effects of calpeptin on the cell growth of MPM, the origin of which is mesenchymal cells, similar to lung fibroblasts. Calpeptin inhibited the proliferation of MPM cells, but not mesothelial cells. It also prevented 1) the expression of angiopoietin (Ang)-1 and Tie-2 mRNA in MPM cells, but not mesothelial cells and 2) the Ang-1-induced proliferation of MPM cells through an NF-kB dependent pathway, which may be the mechanism underlying the preventive effects of calpeptin on the growth of MPM cells. These results suggest potential clinical use of calpeptin for the treatment of MPM.
Transient osteoporosis of the hip with a femoral neck fracture during follow-up: a case report

We report a case of transient osteoporosis of the hip with a femoral neck fracture found during follow-up. A 53-year-old man presented with left hip pain without trauma. The pain did not improve after 2 weeks and he was brought to our hospital by ambulance. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left hip joint showed diffuse edema in the bone marrow, which was identified by low signal intensity on T1-weighted images, high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, and increased signal intensity on short tau inversion recovery. This edema extended from the femoral head and neck to the intertrochanteric area. He was diagnosed with transient osteoporosis of the left hip. Rest gradually improved his pain; however, 3 weeks later, his left hip pain worsened without trauma. X-ray, computed tomography, and MRI results of the hip joint demonstrated a left femoral neck fracture, and osteosynthesis was performed. Differential diagnoses included avascular necrosis of the femoral head, infection, complex regional pain syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, leukemia, and other cancers. Transient osteoporosis of the hip generally has a good prognosis with spontaneous remission within a few months to 1 year. However, a sufficient length of follow-up from condition onset to full recovery is necessary to avoid all probable complications such as fractures.
Extraction of Water-Soluble Porphyrin and Metalloporphyrins into Acetonitrile by Salting-out
Tabata, Masaaki,Kumamoto, Midori 한국분석과학회 1995 분석과학 Vol.8 No.4
A cationic water soluble porphyrin (5,10,15,20-tetrakis (l-methyl-pyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin, $H_2tmpyp^{4+}$) and its metalloporphyrins (MP) were easily extracted into acetonitrile separated by addition of sodium chloride ($4mol\;dm^{-3}$) in the presence of sodium perchlorate, where M denotes $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{3+}$, $Fe^{3+}$, and $Mn^{3+}$ and $P^{2-}$ is porphyrinate ion. The extracted ion-pair complexes were completely dissociated to $[MP(ClO_4)_3]^+$, and $[MP(ClO_4)_2]^{2+}$. The extraction and the dissociation constants were determined by taking into account of the partition constant of sodium perchlorate ($K_D=1.82{\pm}0.01$). The chemical properties of the separated acetonitrile phase as $E_{T(30)}$ and $D_{II,I}$ were determined and compared with other water miscible solvents (acetone, actonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, 1-propanol and 2-propanol). Furthermore, a sensitive and selective method was proposed for the determination of a subnanogram amount of copper(II) in natural water samples by using the present salting-out method and the porphyrins.
Control of the Ordered-Disordered State of B-site Ions in Ferroelectric Relaxor Superlattices
Hitoshi Tabata,가와이,Yasushi Hotta 한국물리학회 2003 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.42 No.IV
Relaxor type ferroelectrics are treasure boxes both for basic physics and practical applications. Among them, Ba(Zr,Ti)O3 is one of the candidate materials for elucidating the mechanism of relaxor phenomena. It has homo-valent B-site ions of Zr4+ and Ti4+. Therefore, there is no driving force to push the ions into ordered structure. On the other hand, it has a possibility of co-existence of multi phases (so-called pinching eect). In case of the bulk state, we have found that the relaxor behavior is strongly aected by the annealing conditions. To make clear the intrinsic parameter for the relaxor, we have demonstrated the articial control the positioning of the B-site ions by the superlattice technique. The stacking periodicity and the compositional combination of BaTiO3 and BaZrO3 are changed systematically with this method and the sign of the relaxor is detected.
Automatic Classification of Respiratory Sound Considering Hierarchical Structure

Respiratory diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Approximately 8 million people die annually from respiratory diseases. Diagnosis is made primarily by auscultation using a stethoscope. The lack of quantitative criteria makes diagnosis difficult in the field where physicians are in short supply. To solve this problem, a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system that quantitatively analyzes and classifies respiratory sounds and outputs them as a second opinion is needed. In this paper, HPSS (Harmonious / Percussive Sound Separation) is used to separate abnormal respiratory sound features. Images are generated from the spectral envelopes obtained by linear prediction coefficients (LPC) for each of the three types of respiratory sound data before separation. The CNN (convolutional neural networks) framework based on hierarchical structure of the correct labels is introduced. The proposed method was applied to the dataset used in the International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics (ICBHI) 2017 Challenge. As a result, we obtained a sensitivity of 63.5%, specificity of 85.1%, average score of 74.3%, harmonic score of 72.7%, area under the curve of 87.8%, and false negative rate of 24.5%, respectively.
