Zγ production and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings in pp@? collisions at s=1.96 TeV

We present a study of eeγ and μμγ events using 1109 (1009) pb<SUP>-1</SUP> of data in the electron (muon) channel, respectively. These data were collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp@? collider at s=1.96 TeV. Having observed 453 (515) candidates in the eeγ (μμγ) final state, we measure the Zγ production cross section for a photon with transverse energy E<SUB>T</SUB>>7 GeV, separation between the photon and leptons ΔR<SUB>@</SUB>?<SUB>&</SUB>gamma;>0.7, and invariant mass of the di-lepton pair M<SUB>@</SUB>?<SUB>@</SUB>?>30 GeV/c<SUP>2</SUP>, to be 4.96+/-0.30(stat.+syst.)+/-0.30(lumi.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 4.74+/-0.22 pb. This is the most precise Zγ cross section measurement at a hadron collider. We set limits on anomalous trilinear Zγγ and ZZγ gauge boson couplings of -0.085<h<SUB>30</SUB><SUP>&</SUP>gamma;<0.084, -0.0053<h<SUB>40</SUB><SUP>&</SUP>gamma;<0.0054 and -0.083<h<SUB>30</SUB><SUP>Z</SUP><0.082, -0.0053<h<SUB>40</SUB><SUP>Z</SUP><0.0054 at the 95% C.L. for the form-factor scale Λ=1.2 TeV.
A combined search for the standard model Higgs boson at s=1.96 TeV

We present new results of the search for WH->@?νbb@? production in pp@? collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=1.96 TeV, based on a dataset with integrated luminosity of 0.44 fb<SUP>-1</SUP>. We combine these new results with previously published searches by the D0 collaboration, for WH and ZH production analyzed in the E@?<SUB>T</SUB>bb@? final state, for ZH (->@?<SUP>+</SUP>@?<SUP>-</SUP>bb@?) production, for WH (->WWW) production, and for H (->WW) direct production. No signal-like excess is observed either in the WH analysis or in the combination of all D0 Higgs boson analyses. We set 95% C.L. (expected) upper limits on σ(pp@?->WH)xB(H->bb@?) ranging from 1.6 (2.2) pb to 1.9 (3.3) pb for Higgs boson masses between 105 and 145 GeV, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 0.13 pb for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with mass m<SUB>H</SUB>=115 GeV. After combination with the other D0 Higgs boson searches, we obtain for m<SUB>H</SUB>=115 GeV an observed (expected) limit 8.5 (12.1) times higher than the SM predicted Higgs boson production cross section. For m<SUB>H</SUB>=160 GeV, the corresponding observed (expected) ratio is 10.2 (9.0).
Piezoelectric and Dielectric Properties of Lead-Free (1-x)(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-xBiFeO3 Ceramics

<P>Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of lead-free (1-x)(Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3-xBiFeO(3) ceramics prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method were studied in the range of x = 0 similar to 40 mol%. A tetragonal perovskite structure was maintained at x = 0 similar to 10 mol% forming a solid solution between (Bi0.5K0.5)TiO3 and BiFeO3 with no secondary phase. Piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) increased from 31 pC/N at x = 0 mol% to 64 pC/N at x = 6 mol% and then decreased with further addition of x. Depolarization temperature (T-d) gradually decreased with increasing x from 302 degrees C at x = 0 mol% to 163 degrees C at x = 20 mol% and slightly increased up 180 degrees C at x = 40 mol%.</P>
Cooperative Activation of PI3K by Ras and Rho Family Small GTPases

Phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) and Ras and Rho family small GTPases are key regulators of cell polarization, motility, and chemotaxis. They influence each other's activities by direct and indirect feedback processes that are only partially understood. Here, we show that 21 small GTPase homologs activate PI3K. Using a microscopy-based binding assay, we show that K-Ras, H-Ras, and five homologous Ras family small GTPases function upstream of PI3K by directly binding the PI3K catalytic subunit, p110. In contrast, several Rho family small GTPases activated PI3K by an indirect cooperative positive feedback that required a combination of Rac, CDC42, and RhoG small GTPase activities. Thus, a distributed network of Ras and Rho family small GTPases induces and reinforces PI3K activity, explaining past challenges to elucidate the specific relevance of different small GTPases in regulating PI3K and controlling cell polarization and chemotaxis.
Anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective effects of the Lindera neesiana fruit in vitro

<P>Background: Lindera neesiana Kurz (Lauraceae), popularly known as Siltimur in Nepal, is an aromatic and spicy plant with edible fruits. It is a traditional herbal medicine widely used for the treatment of diarrhea, tooth pain, headache, and gastric disorders and is also used as a stimulant. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to examine in vitro cytoprotective, anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective potential of an aqueous extract of L. neesiana (LNE) fruit using different central nervous system (CNS) cell lines. Methods: In order to study the neuroprotective potential of LNE, we used three different types of CNS cell lines: murine microglia (BV2), rat glioma (C6), and mouse neuroblastoma (N2a). Cell viability was assessed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reagent, and prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin (IL)-6, and nerve growth factor (NGF) release in the culture media was determined using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) family proteins, Bax, B cell lymphoma (BCL)-2, and cleaved caspase 3. Neurite outgrowth was determined using the IncuCyte imaging system. Results: LNE treatment not only reduced nitric oxide (NO) production in a dose-dependent manner, but also significantly reduced proinflammatory cytokines, iNOS and COX-2 production by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated BV-2 cells. LNE increased the expression of phosphorylated (p)-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), whereas p-p38 and p- janus kinase (JNK) expression was significantly decreased in activated microglia. Furthermore, LNE increased cell viability of N2a cells, which was accompanied by decreased caspase-3 expression and the ratio of Bax/Bcl2 protein expression as well as increased NGF and neurite outgrowth, suggesting its neuroprotective potential against LPS-induced effects. Additionally, LNE substantially increased nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) secretion in N2a cells and inhibited lipid dehydrogenase (LDH) release in H2O2-stimulated BV2 cells demonstrating the strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of LNE in CNS cell lines. Conclusion: Here we found that water the soluble extract of LNE has promising anti-neuroinflammation and anti-apoptotic properties and identify LNE as a potential natural candidate for neuroprotection. Suppression of miRNA-708 by Polycomb Group Promotes Metastases by Calcium-Induced Cell Migration

The progression of cancer to metastatic disease is a major cause of death. We identified miR-708 being transcriptionally repressed by polycomb repressor complex 2-induced H3K27 trimethylation in metastatic breast cancer. miR-708 targets the endoplasmic reticulum protein neuronatin to decrease intracellular calcium level, resulting in reduction of activation of ERK and FAK, decreased cell migration, and impaired metastases. Ectopic expression of neuronatin refractory to suppression by miR-708 rescued cell migration and metastasis defects. In patients with breast cancer, miR-708 expression was decreased in lymph node and distal metastases, suggesting a metastasis-suppressive role. Our findings uncover a mechanistic role for miR-708 in metastasis and provide a rationale for developing miR-708 as a therapeutic agent against metastatic breast cancer.

The hydraulic power-take-off mechanism (HPTO) is one of the most popular methods in wave energy converters (WECs). However, the conventional HPTO with only one direction motion has a number of drawbacks that limit its power capture capability. This paper proposes an adjustable moving angle wave energy converter (AMAWEC) and investigates the effect of the moving angle on the performance of the wave energy converter to find the optimal moving angle in order to increase the power capture capability as well as energy efficiency. A mathematical model of components from a floating buoy to a hydraulic motor was modeled. A small scale WEC test rig was fabricated to verify the power capture capability and efficiency of the proposed system through experiments.

Several studies have reported quantitative trait loci (QTL) for meat quality on porcine chromosome 2 (http://www.animalgenome.org/QTLdb/pig.html). For application of the molecular genetic information to the pig industry through marker-assisted selection, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were analyzed by comparative re-sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products of 13 candidate genes with DNA from commercial pig breeds such as Berkshire, Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc and Korean Native pig. A total of 34 SNPs were identified in 15 PCR products producing an average of one SNP in every 253 bp. PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assays were developed for 11 SNPs and used to investigate allele frequencies in five commercial pig breeds in Korea. Eight of the SNPs appear to be fixed in at least one of the five pig breeds, which indicates that different selection among pig breeds might be applied to these SNPs. Polymorphisms detected in the PTH, CSF2 and FOLR genes were chosen to genotype a Berkshire-Yorkshire pig breed reference family for linkage and association analyses. Using linkage analysis, PTH and CSF2 loci were mapped to pig chromosome 2, while FOLR was mapped to pig chromosome 9. Association analyses between SNPs in the PTH, CSF2 and FOLR suggested that the CSF2 MboII polymorphism was significantly associated with several pork quality traits in the Berkshire and Yorkshire crossed F2 pigs. Our current findings provide useful SNP marker information to fine map QTL regions on pig chromosome 2 and to clarify the relevance of SNP and quantitative traits in commercial pig populations.
