Hysteresis and fast timescales in transport relations of toroidal plasmas
Itoh, K.,Itoh, S.-I.,Ida, K.,Inagaki, S.,Kamada, Y.,Kamiya, K.,Dong, J.Q.,Hidalgo, C.,Evans, T.,Ko, W.H.,Park, H.,Tokuzawa, T.,Kubo, S.,Kobayashi, T.,Kosuga, Y.,Sasaki, M.,Yun, G.S.,Song, S.D.,Kasuya, International Atomic Energy Agency 2017 Nuclear fusion Vol.57 No.10
<P>This article assesses current understanding of hysteresis in transport relations, and its impact on the field. The rapid changes of fluxes compared to slow changes of plasma parameters are overviewed for both core and edge plasmas. The modulation ECH experiment is explained, in which the heating power cycles on-and-off periodically, revealing hysteresis and fast changes in the gradient–flux relation. The key finding is that hystereses were observed simultaneously in both the the gradient–flux and gradient–fluctuation relations. Hysteresis with rapid timescale exists in the channels of energy, electron and impurity densities, and plausibly in momentum. Advanced methods of data analysis are explained. Transport hysteresis can be studied by observing the higher harmonics of temperature perturbation <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\delta T_{\rm m}$ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/57/10/102021/nfaa796aieqn001.gif'/> in heating modulation experiments. The hysteresis introduces the term <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\delta T_{\rm m}$ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/57/10/102021/nfaa796aieqn002.gif'/>, which depends on the harmonic number <I>m</I> in an algebraic manner (not exponential decay). Next, the causes of hysteresis and its fast timescale are discussed. The nonlocal-in-space coupling works here, but does not suffice. One mechanism for ‘the heating heats turbulence’ is that the external source <I>S</I> in phase space for heating has its fluctuation in turbulent plasma. This coupling can induce the direct input of heating power into fluctuations. The height of the jump in transport hysteresis is smaller for heavier hydrogen isotopes, and could be one of the origins of isotope effects on confinement. Finally, the impacts of transport hysteresis on the control system are assessed. Control systems must be designed so as to protect the system from sudden plasma loss.</P>

We have studied(??) reactions from an emulsion target. The S--2H dibaryon has been searched for by the analysis of the ??? momentum spectrum together with emulsion data. No evidence of H production was observed in the mass range of 1.90-2.16 GeV/c². Upper limits for the production cross section of the H are (0.2-0.6)% of that for the quasifree ??? production at the 90% confidence level.

Second harmonic electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) has been investigated on CHS (Compact Helical System) by using a 2-D steerable EC-beam injection system. The direction of the plasma current, which is the sum of bootstrap current and EC-driven current, is clearly reversed by a reversal of the EC-beam injection direction. The direction of driven current is consistent with expectation in the case of low-field side injection of EC wave. So far, a driven current up to 6 kA has been obtained when bootstrap current is less than 2 kA. It is confirmed that right-hand polarization and low density are effective for ECCD.
Seed-mediated synthesis of Pd-Rh bimetallic nanodendrites
Kobayashi, H.,Lim, B.,Wang, J.,Camargo, P.H.C.,Yu, T.,Kim, M.J.,Xia, Y. North Holland ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2010 Chemical physics letters Vol.494 No.4
This Letter describes a simple, aqueous-phase route to the synthesis of Pd-Rh bimetallic nanodendrites consisting of Rh branches anchored to a Pd nanocrystal core. Palladium nanocrystals with various shapes, including truncated octahedron, cube, octahedron, and thin plate, have all been successfully employed as seeds to grow Rh branches via the reduction of Na3RhCl6 with l-ascorbic acid in an aqueous solution. The degree of Rh branching could be controlled by varying the concentration of Na3RhCl6 involved in a synthesis. Electron microscopy analysis revealed that growth of Rh branches proceeded via attachment of small Rh particles that had been formed via homogeneous nucleation in solution.

To evaluate direct and maternal effects on calf market weight (CMW) and carcass weight (CW) in Japanese Black cattle under an animal model, genetic parameters were estimated using 51,320 records of CMW and 11,944 records of CW, respectively. Direct and maternal heritabilities, and direct-maternal genetic correlation were estimated to be 0.22, 0.06 and 0.27 for CMW, and 0.23, 0.12 and -0.40 for CW, respectively. Correlation coefficient between maternal breeding values for CMW and CW was 0.521 for 157 sires appeared in both CMW and CW data sets. These results suggest that the maternal genetic effect on pre-weaning growth carries over to carcass weight. Maternal breeding values for both calf market weight and carcass weight could be used as the indicator traits of maternal ability in Japanese Black cattle.
