Processing the Clause-Mate Condition Effects in Korean
Suyoung Bae,Bum-Sik Park 한국언어학회 2018 언어 Vol.43 No.3
In this paper we examine the Clause-Mate Condition (CMC) effects in Korean multiple fragment answers (MFA). We first observe that Korean MFAs do not always obey the CMC, and show that a syntactic account would fall short of capturing the variability. In this paper, we attempt to provide a direction towards an account. In particular, we claim that the variability arises due to intricate interactions of ellipsis and processing. Observing a close correlation between MFAs and what we call alternative long answers, we first claim that MFAs can be derived by double clausal ellipsis, where ellipsis of the matrix TP is followed by the fronted embedded CP. In terms of processing, the parser strongly tends to process the overt fragments as arguments of the first predicate that it encounters in the linear order, i.e., the (elided) embedded predicate. In some cases, however, this induces wrong parsing, giving rise to the CMC effects in question. The processing effect is unique to ellipsis and thus the non-elided counterpart does not exhibit the same CMC effects. We suggest that the uniqueness of the processing effect might be due to the covertness of predicate.
Neutrophil Proteinase 3 Induces Diabetes in a Mouse Model of Glucose Tolerance
Bae, Suyoung,Choi, Jida,Hong, Jaewoo,Jhun, Hyunjhung,Hong, Kwangwon,Kang, Taebong,Song, Keeho,Jeong, Sangmin,Yum, Hokee,Kim, Soohyun Informa Healthcare 2012 Endocrine research Vol.37 No.1
<P>Type 1 diabetes is considered to be an autoimmune disease in which T cells attack pancreatic islet cells. Impaired glucose tolerance with type 2 diabetes has been classified as an obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. However, recent studies have revealed that type 2 diabetes is an autoinflammatory disease due to an imbalance of inflammatory cytokine production and related molecular components that cause inflammation. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and the insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 (IGFBP3) system are known to be involved in the development of experimental diabetic nephropathy, and urinary IGFBP3 protease activity has been observed in patients with type 2 diabetes. A serine protease was found to be responsible for the proteolytic activity in diabetic urine; however, the identity of the precise enzyme remains unknown. We investigated neutrophil proteinase 3 (PR3) to see whether it has specific enzymatic activity associated with insulin-like growth factor-1 and IGFBP3. In our study, both molecules were sufficiently degraded, which leads us to believe that PR3 may induce insulin resistance in the mouse model utilized. In addition, we found that PR3 in the urine of diabetic patients similarly affects insulin resistance. Moreover, PR3-immunized mice had an increase in glucose clearance due to inhibition of PR3 activity. As such, PR3 can be considered as an inflammatory enzyme directly linking inflammation to type 2 diabetes through downregulation of insulin-like growth factor-1/IGFBP3.</P>
Further Notes on Intervention Effects on Reconstruction
( Suyoung Bae ),( Bum-sik Park ) 한국외국어대학교 언어연구소 2021 언어와 언어학 Vol.- No.92
The main purpose of this paper is to examine the domain and properties of reconstruction of long-distance scrambled phrases in Korean. We argue that Beck & Kim’s (1997) intervention effect can be extended to reconstruction cases, which corroborates the conclusion made by Bae (2020). The main evidence comes from the data showing that long-distance scrambled phrases (outside their base positions) can interact with the syntactic operations such as binding and also affect semantic interpretation of idioms. In particular, we show that the interpretive option for anaphors and idioms is determined by how far reconstruction can be implemented. The result further suggests that binding condition A is not a derivational condition in Korean (contra Belleti & Rizzi 1998).

<P>Proteinase 3 (PR3), a neutrophil granule serine protease, is the major autoantigen for autoantibodies in the systemic vasculitic disease, Wegener's granulomatosis. It is also found to be involved in various inflammatory diseases including Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and gingivitis. However, there is no high quality antibody available to detect endogenous PR3 in biological samples such as plasma and tissue. Several commercial anti-PR3 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were obtained by using HMC-1/PR3 cell granule extracts as the antigen, but the resulting antibodies could not be applied for immunoblotting or other immunological methods. Therefore, we produced human recombinant PR3 in Escherichia coli and developed several MAbs that are highly sensitive and can be used for immunoblotting, FACS analysis, and immunofluorescent staining. The PR3 MAbs recognized both rhPR3 and human plasma-derived neutrophil PR3 in reducing and non-reducing conditions at low nanogram levels. In addition, new MAbs detect endogenous PR3 from normal human plasma and urine with high specificity. The new anti-PR3 MAbs will be an essential tool for investigating the role of PR3 in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.</P>
Points to consider when developing drugs for dry eye syndrome
Suyoung Bae,Hosun Seung,Ho Jung Oh 질병관리본부 2023 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.14 No.2
Changes in both the social environment (e.g., the increased use of electronic media) and the atmospheric environment (e.g., air pollution and dust) have contributed to an increasing incidence of eye disease and an increased need for eye care. Notably, the signs and symptoms of dry eye syndrome can impact the daily quality of life for various age groups, including the elderly, and usually requires active treatment. The symptoms of dry eye syndrome include tear film instability, hyperosmolarity, ocular surface inflammation and damage, and neurosensory abnormalities. As treatments for dry eye are being developed, a standardized guideline is needed to increase the efficiency of drug development and improve the quality of clinical trial data. In this paper, we present general considerations for the pharmaceutical industry and clinical trial investigators designing clinical trials focused on the development of drugs to treat dry eye syndrome.
