The Anti-cancer Effect of Oriental Medicine Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang in the Mouse with Metastatic Lung Cancer. Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 231-243, 1999.-The oriental medicine Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang is an herbal medicine which has been used for pulmonary diseases and known as having immune stimulatory effects. It has been known effective in lung cancer. So we studied the effects and the mechanisms of this herbal medicine it the mouse with metastatic lung cancer. The metastatic lung cancer of the mouse was produced with melnoma cell line(B16BL/6).5×10□/mouse tumor cells were injected intravenously to the CDF1 mouse via tail vein. The mice were divided 4 groups. The first group was treated with 50mg/kg extract of Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang per oral for 10 days after cancer cell injection, second group treated with saline after cancer cell injection, the third group with medicine without cancer cell, and the last group with saline only. After 10 days treatments some of the mice were scarificed and the lung and spleen was removed. The survival duration, weight change, the number of metastatic cancer nodule of the lung, the NK cell activity, the capacity of cytokines(INF-γ,INF-α,IL-2) production and the proliferation activities of mouse lymphocytes were measured. The surival times of the group 1 mice were longer and the weight loss was less than the group 2 significantly. The number of the metastatic nodule of the lung were decresed in the group 1 than the group 2. The production of INF-γ,was increase in group 2 than group 3 and 4, IL-2 production was increased in group 1 than group 2,3,4 significantly. There was no difference in TNF- α production and proliferation activity of lymphocyte in each group. The NK cell activity was significantly increased in group 1 than group 2,3,4. We conclude that the Chung-Ri-Ja-Gam-Tang has the effect of increasing the NK cell activity of the CDF1 mouse with metastatic lung cancer(B16BL/6). And it is suggested that the increased production of the IL-2 is the mechanisms of enhanced NK cell activity.

        작문매체와 학습자의 메타인지가 작문의 질과 길이 및 작문태도에 미치는 영향

        본 연구의 목적은 작문에서의 컴퓨터(워드프로세서) 사용이 최근 작문에서 중요하게 논의되고 있는 학습자의 메타인지와 함께 작문의 결과에 미치는 영향을 알아보는 것이었다. 이를 위해 광주에 있는 U중학교 3학년 남학생 80명을 대상으로 메타인지 수준별(상·하)과 워드집단과 지필집단으로 무선 배정한 후 수업시간에 작문을 하도록 하고 작문 결과와 작문 태도 검사를 통해 작문의 길이와 질, 그리고 작문에 대한 태도 및 그 상호작용 효과를 실험하였다. 실험 결과 워드를 사용한 집단과 메타인지 상위 집단의 작문의 길이와 질은 더 좋았으나, 작문의 태도나 작문 매체와 메타인지 수준에 따른 작문의 길이와 질, 태도의 상호작용 효과는 의의 있는 차이가 없었다. 이에 작문 매체와 메타인지 수준은 작문의 길이와 질에 영향을 준다는 것과, 작문의 태도 및 매체와 메타인지 수준의 상호작용 효과는 다양한 실험 설계와 충분한 시간, 워드프로세서를 이용한 작문 기회의 확대 등과 더불어 다시 논의되어져야 할 것임을 알 수 있었다. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of media and metacognition and their interactive effects on writing quantity, quality, and students' attitudes toward writing. The subjects of this experiment were selected 80 male students from third grades at U middle school in Kwangju city. The research design was 2x2 factorial design with four groups by levels of metacognition and writing medm. On the basis of metacognition test scores, the subjects were divided into two groupshgh vs. low), and these groups were randomly assigned to ane of word-processor writing group and hand-writing group, forming four groups in total. After pretest of writing attitudes, each group were given 45 minutes writing time and took the posttest of writing attitudes after a week. ANOVA and ANCOVA were employed to analyze the data and the significance level, alpha was set at a .05 level. The results were as follows: First, the word-processing group was superior to the hand writing group in writing quantity and quality. second, the high-metacognition group was superior to the low metacognition group in writing quantity and quality. But, writing media and metacognition didn't have a significant effects on student' s attitudes. third, there was no interaction effects between the writing media and the levels of prior metacognition on writing quantity, quality and students' attitudes. Last, in the word-processing group, high metacognition subjects received higher scores than low metacognition subjects. The findmgs from this study indicated that writing media and metacognition had significant effects on writing quantity and quality, and that we must rethink

        Iridology, developed more than 100 years ago, is the diagnosis of medical conditions through noting irregularities of the pigmentation in the iris The purpose of this study is to compare interrelation between CVA, hypertension family history and cardio-renal connective tissue in Iris Constitution through iris constitution examination. The subjects consist of 114 patients who were examined in Iris Constitution at Chonju Oriental Medicine Hospital attached to Wonkwang Univ. from September. 1St. 2000 to August. 31th. 2002. 1. In the distribution of Iris Constitution, among of 79cases, There are neurogenic type 13cases, abdominal connective tissue weakness constitution 31 cases, cardio-renal connective tissue weakness constitution 6 cases, cholesterol 7 cases and others 22 case in control group. 2. There are familial history of CVA and hypertention 32 cases, no familial history of CVA and hypertention1 3 cases, in 35cases of experimental group. These results imply that there is meaningfulness of interrelation between cardio-renal connective tissue weakness constitution and. CVA, hypertention.

        Improved hydrogen recovery in microbial electrolysis cells using intermittent energy input

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a bioelectrochemical technology that can produce hydrogen gas from various organic waste/wastewater. Extra voltage supply (>0.2 V) is required to overcome cathode overpotential for hydrogen evolution. In order to make MEC system more sustainable and practicable, it is necessary to minimize the external energy input or to develop other alternative energy sources. In this study, we aimed to improve the energy efficiency by intermittent energy supply to MECs (setting anode potential = −0.2 V). The overall gas production was increased up to ∼40% with intermittent energy input (on/off = 60/15sec) compared to control reactor. Cathodic hydrogen recovery was also increased from 62% for control MEC to 69–80% for intermittent voltage application. Energy efficiency was increased by 14–20% with intermittent energy input. These results show that intermittent voltage application is very effective not only for energy efficiency/recovery but also for hydrogen production as compared with continuous voltage application.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Intermittent energy supply to MECs used instead of continuous energy supply. </LI> <LI> Overall gas production was increased up to ∼41% with intermittent MECs. </LI> <LI> Shorter duty length (more frequent energy on/off) was better. </LI> <LI> Energy efficiency, recovery, and hydrogen recovery was improved 8–29%. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Effects of low-strength ultrasonication on dark fermentative hydrogen production: Start-up performance and microbial community analysis

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Our previous studies have demonstrated the positive impacts of low-strength (LS)-ultrasonication on biological methane production via anaerobic digestion. In this study, the effects of LS-ultrasonication and effluent recirculation on dark fermentative hydrogen production using upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor were investigated. Significant increase in hydrogen (H<SUB>2</SUB>) yield (up to 0.89 mol H<SUB>2</SUB>/mol hexose) was observed under LS-ultrasonication conditions. This enhanced H<SUB>2</SUB> yield seems to be associated with the decrease in dissolved H<SUB>2</SUB> concentration via a degassing effect, as evident from increased H<SUB>2</SUB> content (up to 20%). Effluent recirculation alone led to positive effects. However, applying both LS-ultrasonication and effluent recirculation decreased H<SUB>2</SUB> yield compared to the trial with only LS-ultrasonication (0.89–0.72 mol H<SUB>2</SUB>/mol hexose), possibly due to the cumulative shear stress and sludge bed expansion above the ultrasonication zone. Microbial community analysis revealed that the presence/absence of LS-ultrasonication and/or effluent recirculation significantly affected the microbial communities. <I>Ethanoligenes cloacae</I>, <I>Aeromonas hydrophila</I> and <I>Clostridium pasteurianum</I> were identified as principal H<SUB>2</SUB> producers under the LS-ultrasonic conditions, while <I>C. butyricum</I>, the most commonly reported H<SUB>2</SUB> producer, was more abundant in the controls. The energy balance of the LS-ultrasonication system was evaluated and future research directions were suggested.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Low-strength ultrasonication enhanced bio-hydrogen production by dark fermentation. </LI> <LI> Effluent recirculation also affected hydrogen production performance. </LI> <LI> <I>Ethanoligenes</I>, <I>Aeromonas</I> and <I>Clostridium</I> were assumed as key H<SUB>2</SUB> producers. </LI> <LI> Some <I>Clostridium</I> spp. responded differently upon ultrasonication treatment. </LI> </UL> </P>
