<P>Anethole is known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities and to be a main constituent of fennel, anise, and camphor. In the present study, we evaluated anti-metastatic and apoptotic effects of anethole on highly-metastatic HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma tumor cells. Despite weak cytotoxicity against HT-1080 cells, anethole inhibited the adhesion to Matrigel and invasion of HT-1080 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Anethole was also able to down-regulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and -9 and up-regulate the gene expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1. The similar inhibitory effect of anethole on MMP-2 and -9 activities was confirmed by zymography assay. Furthermore, anethole significantly decreased mRNA expression of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), but not uPA receptor (uPAR). In addition, anethole suppressed the phosphorylation of AKT, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), p38 and nuclear transcription factor kappa B (NF-κB) in HT-1080 cells. Taken together, our findings indicate that anethole is a potent anti-metastatic drug that functions through inhibiting MMP-2/9 and AKT/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/NF-κB signal transducers.</P>

Background/Aims: The bone marrow functions not only as the primary B-lymphocyte-producing organ but also as a secondary lymphoid organ for CD4 and CD8 cell responses and a site of preferential homing and persistence for memory T cells. Bone marrow T (BM-T) cells are distinguished from peripheral blood T cells by surface phenotype, cytokine secretion profile, and immune functions. In this study, we evaluated the alloreactive potential of donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI) using BM-T cells in mixed chimerism compared to that using spleen T (SP-T) cells. Methods: Cells were prepared using established procedures. BM-T cells were obtained as a by-product of T-cell depletion in BM grafting and then cryopreserved for subsequent DLI. We performed DLI using BM-T cells in allogeneic mixed chimera mice on post-BMT day 21. Results: When the same dose of T cells, 5-10×105 (Thy1.2+), fractionated from BM and spleen were administered into mixed chimeras, the BM-T group showed complete chimeric conversion, with self-limited graftversus-host disease (GVHD) and no pathological changes. However, the SP-T group showed persistent mixed chimerism, with pathological signs of GVHD in the liver and intestine. Conclusions: Our results suggest that DLI using BM-T cells, even in small numbers, is more potent at inducing chimeric conversion in mixed chimerism than DLI using SP-T cells. Further study is needed to determine whether cryopreserved BM-T cells are an effective cell source for DLI to consolidate donor-dominant chimerism in clinical practice without concerns about GVHD. 자녀장려세제의 기본적인 목적은 저소득층의 자녀양육부담 경감이지만, 본 제도는 저소득층의 근로 유인 제고 역시 목적으로 하고 있다. 따라서 자녀장려세제의 효과성을 분석할 때는 자녀양육부담 경감효과뿐만 아니라 본 제도가 노동공급에 미치는 효과 역시 검토가 되어야 한다. 그런데 국내에서 이루어진 대부분의 연구는 자녀장려세제가 빈곤 및 소득재분배에 미치는 효과와 자녀장려금이 자녀를 위한 소비에 사용되는가 등에 초점이 맞추어져 있으며, 노동공급 효과에 초점을 맞춘 연구는 아주 제한적으로만 이루어졌다. 이에 본 연구는 가구주와 배우자의 월평균 근로시간, 배우자의 경제활동 참여확률을 성과변수로 자녀장려세제가 노동공급에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 이론적으로 볼 때 점증구간 없이 평탄구간과 점감구간 만으로 설계되어 있는 자녀장려세제의 특징을 고려하면 자녀장려세제는 노동공급에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상된다. 그러나 본 연구의 분석 결과에 따르면 자녀장려금은 이미 노동공급을 하고있는 가구주와 배우자의 근로시간에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이는 이론적인 예상과는 달리 자녀장려세제의 부정적인 효과가 나타나지 않음을 보여준다. 또한, 본 연구의 분석 결과에 따르면 자녀장려금은 배우자의 노동시장 참여 확률을 유의미하게 증가시켰다. 이는 점감구간이 시작되는 소득을 홑벌이 가구와 맞벌이가구에 차별적으로 적용하는 본 제도의 특징을 반영하는 결과이다. 이상과 같은 분석 결과는 자녀장려세제가 노동시장에 일정 정도 긍정적인 영향을 미치면서 제도 도입의 목적을 효과적으로 달성하고 있음을 시사한다. Basic purpose of the Child Tax Credit(CTC) is to alleviate the burden of child raising for low-income families, but it also aims to induce participation in economic activities. Therefore, when analyzing the effectiveness of the system, it is necessary to analyze not only the effects of CTC on the reduction of child rasing burden but also on the labor supply. However, most previous studies have focused on the basic purpose of CTC and only few studies have focused on the effects on labor supply. So this study analyzed the effects of CTC on the average monthly working hours of household heads and spouses, and the effects of CTC on probability of spouses’ participation in economic activities. Theoretically, CTC is expected to have the effect of reducing working hours because of its characteristic that it is designed with only plateau and phase-out range without the phase-in range. However, according to the analysis results of this study, CTC did not have a significant effects on the working hours of the household head and spouse who are already working. That is, the expected negative effects did not appear in our analysis. In addition, in our empirical results, CTC significantly increased the probability of spouse’s participation in the labor market. This is a result of reflecting the characteristics of this system in which the income at the beginning of the phase-out range is applied differentially to single- and dual-income households. These results implies that the purpose of introducing the system is effectively achieved while the CTC has a certain positive effects on the labor market.

Carnitine (β-hydroxy-γ-trimethylaminobutyric acid) is involved in the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondrial matrix and the removal of potentially toxic acylcarnitine esters. Transient carnitine transport defect is a rare condition in newborns reported in 1/90,000live births. In this paper, we describe a case of transient carnitine transport defect found in a premature baby who had prolonged cholestatic jaundice and poor weight gain, and who responded dramatically to oral carnitine supplementation.

Ni/YSZ $(Y_2O_3-stabilized\;ZrO_2)$ composite as an electrode component for High Temperature Electrolysis (HTE) was fabricated by mechanical alloying method using Ni and YSZ powders. Characterization of the synthesized composite was investigated with various analysis tools, including XRD, SEM and PSA, and a self-supporting planar unit cell prepared with the Ni/YSZ composite was prepared to study the electrochemical reactions for the production of hydrogen. The Ni/YSZ cermet is composed of crystalline Ni and YSZ, in a sub-micro scale, and has an even distribution without aggregated particles. In addition, under an electrochemical reaction, the unit cell showed an $H_2$ evolution rate from steam of 14 Nml/min and $600mA/cm^2$ of current density at the electrode.
