Anxiolytic effect of leaf galls extracts of Pipernigrum Linn. in Swiss Albino mice

Anxiety disorders are one of the serious problems which need proper therapy devoid of side effects of presently available medicines. The present study evaluates the anxiolytic and sedative activity of leaf galls of Piper nigrum Linn. in Swiss Albino mice. The pet. ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of leaf galls of Piper nigrum Linn were obtained by continuous soxhlet extraction. The prepared extracts were found to be safe up to 2000 mg/kg body weight of mice in the acute toxicity study. Each extract was assessed for anxiolytic activity in Swiss Albino mice by elevated plus Maze, open field test, rota rod test and phenobarbitone induced sleeping time test. In the Elevated Plus Maze test, the pet.ether extract and chloroform extract at a dose of 50 mg/kg b.w. orally, significantly (P < 0.01) increased the number of entries and time spent in open arm comparable with standard diazepam at the dose of 10 mg/kg. b.w. p.o. In the open field test, pet. ether extract (50 mg/kg b.w. p.o.) showed significant increase (P < 0.01) in ambulation and activity in the center. Chloroform extract (50 mg/kg b.w p.o.) was significant (P < 0.05) for both ambulation and center activity. Pet. ether extract (50 mg/kg b.w. p.o) also showed significant activity (P < 0.01) in rota rod test. All the results are comparable with standard diazepam at the dose of 1 mg /kg b.w, p.o. Moreover all the extracts showed significant (P < 0.01) increase in the phenobarbitone induced sleeping time among which pet.ether showed more prominent activity (36%) comparable with control. The results revealed that, the active pet.ether extract and chloroform extract of leaf galls of Piper nigrum Linn is worthwhile to develop the bioactive principle for anxiolytic activity. Pharmacokinetic behaviour of clinically important TCM prescriptions

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has played a vital role in human health and welfare for a long period. Traditional Chinese Medicine prescription is the prime application scheme of TCM. Combination of two or more medicinal herbs is one of the most important and fundamental characteristic of TCM prescription. In light of their simplicity and the basic qualities of complex prescription, multi herb formulations (extract, decoction and etc) are of great significance in the considerations of herb compatibility, standardization, safety evaluation, therapeutic potential and mechanism of action of multi herb formulations. Several research papers have been published that state therapeutic activity of multi herb formulations but few are discussing the exact role of herbal combinations. To provide satisfactory data about rationality and compatibility of these TCM prescription and for pharmacokinetic profile, we reviewed the pharmacokinetic profile of 30 different clinically important TCM prescriptions.
Screening of Alstonia scholaris Linn. R. Br., for wound healing activity

Alstonia scholaris (Family: Apocynaceae) has been indicated for the treatment of various diseases, one among which is wound healing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the wound healing effect and antioxidant role of Alstonia scholaris leaves in animal models. The ethanol and aqueous extracts of Alstonia scholaris (EEAS, AEAS respectively) were tested against excision, incision and dead space wound models to evaluate the wound healing activity. In excision wound model, treatment was continued till the complete healing of wound, in incision and dead space wound models, the treatment was continued for 10 days. For topical application, 5% w/w ointment of EEAS and AEAS were prepared in 2% sodium alginate. For oral administration, EEAS was suspended in distilled water using Tween 80 and AEAS was dissolved in distilled water. The wound healing was assessed by the rate of wound contraction, period of epithelialisation, skin breaking strength, granulation strength, dry granulation tissue weight, hydroxyproline, collagen and histopathology of granulation tissue. Malondialdehyde level was also estimated to evaluate the extent of lipid peroxidation. AEAS and EEAS significantly promoted wound healing activity in all the wound models studied. Increase in the rate of wound contraction, skin breaking strength, granulation strength, dry granulation tissue weight, hydroxyproline and collagen, decrease in the period for epithelialisation and increased collagenation in histopathological section were observed with EEAS and AEAS treated groups. EEAS and AEAS also significantly decreased the levels of lipid peroxidation. The present study is suggestive that EEAS and AEAS promote wound healing activity.

The condensation of cyclic ketone with aromatic aldehydes in the presence of ammonium acetate under ethanol media affords the corresponding 5-aryl-7,8,13,14-tetrahydrodibenzo[a,i]phenanthridine with excellent yield. This mild and efficient procedure with high yield is also applied to the synthesis of 2,4-diaryl-6,7-benzo-3-azabicyclo- [3.3.1]nonan-9-ones and ${\alpha},{\alpha}{$’-bis(substituted benzylidene)cycloalkanones.
Studies on corrosion protection of Al2024 T6 alloy by electropolymerized polyaniline coating

Aqueous electropolymerized polymer coatings on aluminum alloys can replace the carcinogenic chromate coating. In this work, theon aluminum were formed by galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods from a bath of 0.5 M oxalic acid containing 0.1 M aniline. Thecorrosion protection ability of the coating was found out by Tafel polarization and EIS in 1% NaCl solution. It has been found thatpolyaniline coated aluminum alloy has exhibited higher corrosion activity due to the presence of pores in the coating. However, the cor-rosion resistant property of polyaniline coated aluminum has been found to be improved to 90% by post-treatment in cerium containingsolution at 60℃
