(Jae Do Kim) Korean Society for Precision Engineering Vol.30 No.4
In this paper, the characteristics of ablation processing of the eagle glass by pico-second laser are investigated. The laser ablation is used to process micro forms on materials. The ablation causes little thermal effect and little burr on the surface of eagle glass. In order to examine the characteristics of panic cracks, experiments are conducted under various cutting conditions such as a frequency of 600 kHz, laser powers, scan speeds and number of scan(NS). To minimize the panic cracks, the specimens are heated at 30℃, 45℃, and 60℃ for ten minutes respectively and then they are broken by hands. Laser powers, NS and scan speeds have an effect on glass cutting results. The ablation depths increase with an increase in the laser power and NS whereas the panic cracks decrease with an increase in scan speed. The high temperature on processed specimens reduces the panic cracks and makes good results of laser cutting. The optimal condition for eagle glass laser cutting is found to be at 30 W of laser power, 3 mm/s of scan speed and 500 of NS, respectively.

Vol.4 No.1
The object of this research is to develop an Interactive Computerized Graphic Program for graphic output of velocity, acceleration and motion range of body-task reference point (e.g., C.O.G., joint location, etc.). Human motions can be reproduced by scanning (rate = 60Hz) the vidicon image, and the results are stored in an Apple II P.C. memory. The results of this study can be extended to simulation and reproduction of human motions for optimal task design.

We analyzed glycerol using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and compared the separation resolution of some mobile phases. When acetonitrile:distilled water (85:15 v/v) was used as a mobile phase, the band of glycerol on the TLC was more distinctly and rapidly separated. Using TLC analysis, we prepared a calibration curve for the glycerol concentration vs. the area of the glycerol band in which the glycerol concentration of the x-axis was converted into a log-scale ranging from 3.0 to 0.0625 (%, w/v). Based on this calibration curve, the residual glycerol concentration (0.2 [%, w/v]) in biodiesel was determined successfully using TLC analysis. When the results of the TLC analysis were compared with those of a chemical and enzymatic assay, the results were fairly similar. We conclude that TLC without additional analytical instruments can be used as an alternative method for the quantitative analysis of the concentration of glycerol in biodiesel.

Objectives: To propose a risk-adjustment model from insurance claims data, and analyze the changes in cesarean section rates of healthcare organizations after adjusting for risk distribution. Methods: The study sample included delivery claims data from January to September, 2003. A risk-adjustment model was built using the 1st quarter data, and the 2nd and 3rd quarter data were used for a validation test. Patients' risk factors were adjusted using a logistic regression analysis. The c-statistic and Hosmer-Lemeshow test were used to evaluate the performance of the risk-adjustment model. Crude, predicted and risk-adjusted rates were calculated, and compared to analyze the effects of the adjustment. Results: Nine risk factors (malpresentation, eclampsia, malignancy, multiple pregnancies, problems in the placenta, previous Cesarean section, older mothers, bleeding and diabetes) were included in the final risk-adjustment model, and were found to have statistically significant effects on the mode of delivery. The c-statistic (0.78) and Hosmer-Lemeshow test ($x^2$=0.60, p=0.439) indicated a good model performance. After applying the 2nd and 3rd quarter data to the model, there were no differences in the c-statistic and Hosmer-Lemeshow $x^2$. Also, risk factor adjustment led to changes in the ranking of hospital Cesarean section rates, especially in tertiary and general hospitals. Conclusion: This study showed a model performance, using medical record abstracted data, was comparable to the results of previous studies. Insurance claims data can be used for identifying areas where risk factors should be adjusted. The changes in the ranking of hospital Cesarean section rates implied that crude rates can mislead people and therefore, the risk should be adjusted before the rates are released to the public. The proposed risk-adjustment model can be applied for the fair comparisons of the rates between hospitals.
Sedimentation Pattern in a Macrotidal Bay (Namhaepo Bay), West coast of Korea
LEE, SANG-DO,PARK, SOO-CHUL The Korean Society of Oceanography Vol.26 No.4
The sedimentation pattern in Namhaepo Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment of western Korea, was investigated by means of analysing high-resolution seismic profiles, sediment samples, and tidal currents. Recent sediments up to 20 m which overlie the irregular surface of the acoustic basement. The sediments consist mainly of sandy silt and silt; the mean grain size of these sediments ranges from 4 to 5.5 phi, showing a shoreward-fining distribution pattern. This distribution pattern agrees are largely reversed during ebb, with a maximum velocity of 39 cm/sec. The calculated shear velocity of the tidal currents at sea bed ranges from 0.5 to 3.3 cm/sec during flood and from 0.7 to 2.5 cm/sec during ebb. The mean values of these velocities exceed the critical shear velocity for the silt particles. The data suggest that the tidal currents play an important role in the transportation and deposition of sediments in the bay and the surface topography of the sea floor is largely deter-mined by tidal sedimentation.
