The information contained in vivo fluorescence spectra of biological specimens is often obscured by severe overlapping of component spectra. Fluorescence intensity is separately linear in functions of excitation wavelength, emission wavelength, and any chemical treatment which alters overall fluorescence yield. When data are collected for several values of each of these three independent variables, strongly overlapping spectra can be resolved without the use of any a priori information about their shapes. Using concentration of a fluorescence quencher, potassium iodide, as a third variable, a mixture of rhodamine 6G, rhodamine B, and sulforhodamine 101 was used as a test system; the spectra resolved agreed closely with the spectra of the pure dyes. Previously published applications of trilinear analysis to luminescence spectroscopy have required either an instrument capable of time resolution or multiple specimens with varying relative concentrations of fluorophores; use of quencher concentration as a variable permits use of the method with a steady-state fluorometer and without changing fluorophore concentrations. Requiring that the spectra deduced be non-negative can increase the accuracy of the results.

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P><B>Background</B></P><P>Organochlorine pesticides are associated with an increased risk of Parkinson's disease. A preliminary analysis from the Honolulu‐Asia Aging Study suggested that heptachlor epoxide, a metabolite from an organochlorine pesticide extensively used in Hawaii, may be especially important. This was a cross sectional analysis to evaluate the association of heptachlor epoxide and other organochlorine compounds with Lewy pathology in an expanded survey of brain organochlorine residues from the longitudinal Honolulu‐Asia Aging Study.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Organochlorines were measured in frozen occipital or temporal lobes in 705 brains using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. Lewy pathology was identified using hematoxylin and eosin‐ and α‐synuclein immunochemistry‐stained sections from multiple brain regions.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The prevalence of Lewy pathology was nearly doubled in the presence versus the absence of heptachlor epoxide (30.1% versus 16.3%, <I>P</I> < 0.001). Although associations with other compounds were weaker, hexachlorobenzene (<I>P</I> = 0.003) and α‐chlordane (<I>P</I> = 0.007) were also related to Lewy pathology. Most of the latter associations, however, were a result of confounding from heptachlor epoxide. Neither compound was significantly related to Lewy pathology after adjustment for heptachlor epoxide. In contrast, the association of heptachlor epoxide with Lewy pathology remained significant after adjustments for hexachlorobenzene (<I>P</I> = 0.013) or α‐chlordane (<I>P</I> = 0.005). Findings were unchanged after removal of cases of PD and adjustment for age and other characteristics.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Organochlorine pesticides are associated with the presence of Lewy pathology in the brain, even after exclusion of PD cases. Although most of the association is through heptachlor epoxide, the role of other organochlorine compounds is in need of clarification. © 2018 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society</P>

<P>We present a joint experimental and computational study of the hexacyanoferrate aqueous complexes at equilibrium in the 250 meV to 7.15 keV regime. The experiments and the computations include the vibrational spectroscopy of the cyanide ligands, the valence electronic absorption spectra, and Fe 1s core hole spectra using element-specific-resonant X-ray absorption and emission techniques. Density functional theory-based quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics molecular dynamics simulations are performed to generate explicit solute-solvent configurations, which serve as inputs for the spectroscopy calculations of the experiments spanning the IR to X-ray wavelengths. The spectroscopy simulations are performed at the same level of theory across this large energy window, which allows for a systematic comparison of the effects of explicit solute-solvent interactions in the vibrational, valence electronic, and core-level spectra of hexacyanoferrate complexes in water. Although the spectroscopy of hexacyanoferrate complexes in solution has been the subject of several studies, most of the previous works have focused on a narrow energy window and have not accounted for explicit solute-solvent interactions in their spectroscopy simulations. In this work, we focus our analysis on identifying how the local solvation environment around the hexacyanoferrate complexes influences the intensity and line shape of specific spectroscopic features in the UV/vis, X-ray absorption, and valence-to-core X-ray emission spectra. The identification of these features and their relationship to solute-solvent interactions is important because hexacyanoferrate complexes serve as model systems for understanding the photochemistry and photophysics of a large class of Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes in solution.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Sixty eight wild rats were caught from Seoul city, Kyonggi, Kangwon, Cholla, and Kyongsang-province. All of them were in same species, Rattus norvegicus. Sixty eight sera from wild rats were studied by immunofluorescent antibody assay for evidence of infection by scrub typhus. The antibody prevalance was 22% (15/68) for scrub typhus. The sero-prevalance rates for scrub typhus were the higest in Kangwon with 63% (5/8), Kyongsang with 40% (8/20), and Kyonggi province and Seoul city with 6% (1/16) positive respectively. The sero-positive rate difference between sexes for scrub typhus was not revealed. According to age classification, 15 positive cases to scrub typhus were divided in 16% (1/12) of subadult, 47% (8/17) of middle-aged, and 23% (5/21) of old adult rats.

Sixty eight wild rats, Rattus norvegicus, were caught from Seoul city, Kyonggi, Kangwon, Cholla, and Kyongsang-provinces. All sera collected from rats were examined by immunofluorescent test to find antibody against murine typhus. The antibody prevalance to murine typhus was 4.4%(3/68). Sero-positive rate was 12.5%(2/16) in Kyonggi province and 12.5%(1/8) in Cholla province. The sero-positive rate difference between sexes of rats was not recognized. Three Rattus norvegicus having antibody to murine typhus were morphologically classified as subadult with 8.3%(1/12), middle-aged adult with 5.9%(1/17), and old adult with 4.8%(1/21), respectively.

Backgrounds/Aims: Middle hepatic vein (MHV) is usually preserved as a part of the right or left hepatectomy in order preserve the venous outflow of remnant liver. The aim of this study was to evaluate if resection of MHV could influence post-resection outcomes of standard right or left hepatectomy. Methods: Patients who underwent standard right or left hepatectomy between January 2015 and December 2019 were included. Anatomical remnant liver volumes were measured retrospectively using the Hermes workstation (Hermes Medical Solutions AB, Stockholm, Sweden). Uni- and multi-variate analyses were performed to assess the difference in outcomes of those with preservation of MHV and those without preservation. Results: A total of 144 patients were included. Right hepatectomy was performed for 114 (79.2%) and left hepatectomy was performed for 30 (20.8%) patients. MHV was resected for 13 (9.0%) in addition to the standard right or left hepatectomy. Median remnant liver volume was significantly higher in the MHV resected group (p < 0.01). There was no significant difference in serum level of bilirubin, international normalized ratio, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine on postoperative day 1, 3, 5, or 10, ≥ grade IIIa complications (p = 0.44), or 90-day mortality (p = 0.41). On multivariable analysis, resection of the MHV did not influence the incidence of post hepatectomy liver failure (p = 0.52). Conclusions: Resection of the MHV at standard right or left hepatectomy did not have a negative impact on postoperative outcomes of patients with adequate remnant liver volume.
