The objective of this study was to determine the effect of macrophages on growth of human colon cancer cells. The results showed that co-culture of colon cancer cells with macrophages inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells (HCT116 and SW620) depending on the number of macrophages, RAW 264.7 cells, and activated THP-1 cells accompanied by down regulation of pSTAT3 in cancer cells. We also found that expression and release of cancer cell growth inhibitory cytokines, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and IL-10, was increased in macrophages. Blocking of the STAT3 pathway with specific inhibitor and siRNA of STAT3 abolished the growth of colon cancer cells and expression of IL-1ra and IL-10. In addition, neutralization of IL-1ra and IL-10 with antibodies resulted in reversal of macrophage-induced inhibition of cancer cell growth. These data showed that IL-1ra and IL-10 released from macrophages inhibit growth of colon cancer cells through inhibition of the STAT3 pathway

The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes for integration education and the intimacy with disabled students of Nondisabled students influenced by disabled students. For such purpose, 477 students of 15 classes from 5 elementary schools located in Daegu Metropolitan City were selected as the object of this study. Integrated Attitudes was measured through an investigation equipment by Oh Won-Seok and Seo-Yeong Ran which adapted and modified a testing document called Inclusion of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing Inventory (ISDHH) invented by Hsin-Ling Hung(2005). The result indicated that the factors which influence the Attitudes of nondisabled students regarding integration with disabled students are the type of injury, the gender and the cleanness of the disabled student. The factors which do not influence the above are interests of the disabled student``s parents, economic level of the family and the learning ability of the disabled student.
Electrical quadruple hysteresis in Pd-doped vanadium pentoxide nanowires due to water adsorption
Kim, Byung Hoon,Oh, Soon-Young,Yu, Han Young,Hong, Won G,Yun, Yong Ju,Kim, Yark Yeon,Kim, Hae Jin Elsevier 2010 SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF ADVANCED MATERIALS Vol.11 No.6
<P>Humidity-dependent current–voltage (<I>I–V</I>) characteristics of Pd-doped vanadium pentoxide nanowires (Pd-VONs) were investigated. Electrical quadruple hysteresis (QH) was observed and attributed to the large amount of water molecules adsorbed on the nanowires. Using QH in Pd-VONs, the reaction of water with PdO was interpreted as the water molecules are desorbed and then dissociated with increasing bias voltage. Owing to the dissociated H+ and OH− ions, PdO is reduced and oxidized. As a result, water molecules recombine as the bias voltage is decreased.</P>

A spin coating process for RRAM, which is a TiN/TiO2/FTO structure based on a PTC sol solution, was developed in this laboratory, a method which enables low-temperature and eco-friendly manufacturing. The RRAM corresponds to an OxRAM that operates through the formation and extinction of conductive filaments. Heat treatment was selected as a method of controlling oxygen vacancy (VO), a major factor of the conductive filament. It was carried out at 100 ℃ under moisture removal conditions and at 300 ℃ and 500 ℃ for excellent phase stability. XRD analysis confirmed the anatase phase in the thin film increased as the heat treatment increased, and the Ti3+ and OH- groups were observed to decrease in the XPS analysis. In the I-V analysis, the device at 100 ℃ showed a low primary SET voltage of 5.1 V and a high ON/OFF ratio of 104. The double-logarithmic plot of the I-V curve confirmed the device at 100 ℃ required a low operating voltage. As a result, the 100 ℃ heat treatment conditions were suitable for the low voltage driving and high ON/OFF ratio of TiN/TiO2/FTO RRAM devices and these results suggest that the operating voltage and ON/OFF ratio required for OxRAM devices used in various fields under specific heat treatment conditions can be compromised.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ion exchange technology is the most effective and economical to remove heat stable salts (HSS) in CO2 absorption processes. However, the disadvantage of high waste generation remains an unsolved problem. This study attempted to reduce the amount of waste generated during the Zr(OH)5 − regeneration process through resource recovery by using ZrCl4 coagulant, then recycling the recovered Zr(OH)4 precipitate to produce Zr(OH)5 − regenerant. The experimental results showed a waste coagulant efficiency of about 75%. The coagulation mechanism was suggested based on the conductivity and zeta potential analysis. The recovered Zr(OH)4 had no differences in terms of chemical composition and regeneration efficiency, when compared with virgin material. These results indicate that the recovery and recycling of Zr(OH)4 from the waste stream using ZrCl4 as a coagulant reduced a large amount of the waste generated from the ion exchange process.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Reduction efficiency using ZrCl4 coagulant from ion exchange waste is about 75.0%. </LI> <LI> Coagulation mechanism of four stages with respect to the coagulant dose is proposed. </LI> <LI> Recovery efficiency of hydroxide, as Zr(OH)4, from the waste is about 99.2%. </LI> <LI> The recovered Zr(OH)4 has no difference in regeneration efficiency of virgin material. </LI> </UL> </P>

The progression and exacerbation of liver fibrosis are closely related to the gut microbiome. It is hypothesized that some probiotics may slow the progression of liver fibrosis. In human stool analysis [healthy group (n = 44) and cirrhosis group (n = 18)], difference in Lactobacillus genus between healthy group and cirrhosis group was observed. Based on human data, preventive and therapeutic effect of probiotics Lactobacillus lactis and L. rhamnosus was evaluated by using four mice fibrosis models. L. lactis and L. rhamnosus were supplied to 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine or carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis C57BL/6 mouse model. Serum biochemical measurements, tissue staining, and mRNA expression in the liver were evaluated. The microbiome was analyzed in mouse cecal contents. In the mouse model, the effects of Lactobacillus in preventing and treating liver fibrosis were different for each microbe species. In case of L. lactis, all models showed preventive and therapeutic effects against liver fibrosis. In microbiome analysis in mouse models administered Lactobacillus, migration and changes in the ratio and composition of the gut microbial community were confirmed. L. lactis and L. rhamnosus showed preventive and therapeutic effects on the progression of liver fibrosis, suggesting that Lactobacillus intake may be a useful strategy for prevention and treatment.
