      • Structural characterization of the pulmonary innate immune protein SPLUNC1 and identification of lipid ligands

        <P>The short palate, lung and nasal epithelial clone 1 (SPLUNC1) protein is a member of the palate, lung, and nasal epithelium clone (PLUNC) family, also known as bactericidal/permeability-increasing (BPI) fold-containing protein, family A, member 1 (BPIFA1). SPLUNC1 is an abundant protein in human airways, but its function remains poorly understood. The lipid ligands of SPLUNC1 as well as other PLUNC family members are largely unknown, although some reports provide evidence that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) could be a lipid ligand. Unlike previous hypotheses, we found significant structural differences between SPLUNC1 and BPI. Recombinant SPLUNC1 produced in HEK 293 cells harbored several molecular species of sphingomyelin and phosphatidylcholine as its ligands. Significantly, <I>in vitro</I> lipid-binding studies failed to demonstrate interactions between SPLUNC1 and LPS, lipoteichoic acid, or polymyxin B. Instead, one of the major and most important pulmonary surfactant phospholipids, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), bound to SPLUNC1 with high affinity and specificity. We found that SPLUNC1 could be the first protein receptor for DPPC. These discoveries provide insight into the specific determinants governing the interaction between SPLUNC1 and lipids and also shed light on novel functions that SPLUNC1 and other PLUNC family members perform in host defense.—Ning, F., Wang, C., Berry, K.         Antioxidant Properties of Proanthocyanidins Attenuate Carbon Tetrachloride (CCl4)–Induced Steatosis and Liver Injury in Rats via CYP2E1 Regulation

        Liver steatosis is characterized by lipid dysregulation and fat accumulation in the liver and can lead tooxidative stress in liver. Since proanthocyanidins are present in plant-based foods and have powerful antioxidant properties,we investigated whether proanthocyanidins can prevent oxidative stress and subsequent liver injury. Carbon tetrachloride(CCl4) treatment can cause steatosis in rats that models both alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in humans. Wepre-treated rats by oral administration of proanthocyanidins extracted from grape seeds 7 days prior to intragastricallyadministering CCl4. Proanthocyanidin treatment continued for an additional 2 weeks, after which time liver and serum were harvested, and mediators of liver injury, oxidative stress, and histological features were evaluated. CCl4-treated rats exhibited significant increases in the following parameters as compared to non-treated rats: fat droplets in the liver, liver injury (ALT, AST), and DNA damage (8-OHdG). Additionally, CCl4 treatment decreased antioxidant enzymes SOD, GSH, GPX, and CAT in the liver due to their rapid depletion after battling against oxidative stress. Compared to CCl4-treated rats, treatment with proanthocyanidins effectively suppressed lipid accumulation, liver injury, DNA damage, as well as restored antioxidant enzyme levels. Further investigation revealed that proanthocyanidins treatment also inhibited expression of CYP2E1 in liver, which prevented the initial step of generating free radicals from CCl4. The data presented here show that treatment with orally administered proanthocyanidins prevented liver injury in the CCl4-induced steatosis model, likely through exerting antioxidant actions to suppress oxidative stress and inhibiting the free radical–generating CYP2E1 enzyme.

        A new androstane derivative, 4β-methyl-15-oxa-14β-androstane-7-ene-4α-carboxylic acid (1) and a known one 4β-methyl-15-oxa-14β-androstane-7-ene-4α-hydroxyl (2) were isolated from the EtOAc extract of the cultures of the fungus Marasmiellus ramealis (Bull.) Singer. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR as well as MS spectroscopic data analysis. The inhibitory activity of two isolates against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) revealed that compound 1 exhibited definitely inhibitory activity.

        Distributed Model Predictive Control of Iron Precipitation Process by Goethite Based on Dual Iterative Method

        Iron precipitation is a key process in zinc hydrometallurgy. The process consists of a series of continuousreactors arranged in descending order, overflowing zinc leach solution from one reactor to the next. In this paper,according to the law of mass conservation and the reaction kinetics, a continuously stirred tank reactor model ofa single reactor is first established. Then, a distributed model of cascade reactors is built with coupled controlbased on the single reactor model, considering the unreacted oxygen in leaching solution. Secondly, four reactorsin the iron precipitation process are considered as four subsystems, the optimization control problem of the processis solved by a distributed model predictive control strategy. Moreover, the control information feedback betweensuccessive subsystems is used to solve the optimization problem of each subsystem, because of the existing controlcoupling in their optimization objective function of pre and post subsystems. Next, considering the intractability ofthe optimization problem for subsystems with various constraints, a distributed dual iterative algorithm is proposedto simplify the calculation. With the consideration of its cascade structure and control couplings, the proposedalgorithm iteratively solves the primal problem and the dual problem of each subsystem. The application case showsthat distributed model predictive control based on dual iteration algorithm can handle coupled control effectivelyand reduce the oxygen consumption.

        Humidity and Temperature Response Characteristics of Optical Fiber Dislocation Fusion Sensor Coated with Graphene Quantum Dots

        An optical fiber dislocation fusion humidity sensor coated with graphene quantum dots is investigated. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer is fabricated with three dislocated single-mode fibers with graphene quantum dots coating humidity-sensitive materials. Humidity response experiments showed a good linear response and high sensitivity with easy fabrication and low-cost materials. From 22% to 98% RH, the humidity response sensitivity of the sensor is 0.24 dB/% RH, with 0.9825 linearity. To investigate the cross-response of humidity and temperature, temperature response experiments are conducted. From30 ℃ to 70 ℃, the results showed 0.02 dB/℃ sensitivity and 0.9824 linearity. The humidity responseexperimental curve is compared with the temperature experimental curve. The big difference between humidity sensitivity and temperature sensitivity is very helpful to solve the cross-response of humidity and temperature. The influence of temperature fluctuations in humidity measurements is not obvious.

        UAV Formation Obstacle Avoidance Control Algorithm Based on Improved Artificial Potential Field and Consensus

        Aiming at the problem of UAV formation's obstacle avoidance and the consensus of position and velocity in a 3D obstacle environment, a novel distributed obstacle avoidance control algorithm for cooperative formation based on the improved artificial potential field (IAPF) and consensus theory is proposed in this paper. First, the particle model of the UAV and the dynamic model of the second-order system are established, and the topological structure of the communication network of the system is described with the knowledge of graph theory. Second, the attractive potential field function containing the coordination gains factor, the repulsive potential field function containing the influence factor of the repulsive force and the planning angle, and the potential field function between the UAVs containing the communication weight are defined. Then, the variables of position and velocity in the consensus protocol are improved by the reference vector of the formation center and the expected velocity, respectively, and a new formation obstacle avoidance control protocol is designed by combining the IAPF and the theory of consensus. Finally, the Lyapunov function is used to prove the stable convergence of the algorithm. The simulation results show that this method can not only prevent the UAV from colliding with each other while avoiding static and dynamic obstacles but also enable the UAV to quickly restore the expected formation and achieve the consensus of the relative distance, relative height, and velocity.

        Efficient degradation of azo dye by dual-doped photo-enhanced Fentonlike catalysts in magnetic suspension reactor

        Fenton-like catalysts have sparked enormous interest from academic to industrial fields because of theirexcellent degradability and offered a promising platform for the effective treatment of wastewater. However, it remains a grand challenge to balance their catalytic performance and corrosion resistancefor industrial application. To address this issue, we report Cr and C dual-doped photo-enhancedFenton-like catalysts (Cr, C-FeSiB) in which Cr functions as a corrosion inhibitor to improve recycling performanceand C acts as an electron transfer accelerator to raise the cycle efficiency of iron ions duringcomplex Fenton-like reactions. Moreover, we design a low energy-consumption magnetic-suspensionlikereactor in which Fenton-like catalysts can work as micro-scaled stirrers to enhance the mass transferefficiency during the Fenton-like reactions owing to their soft magnetic property.

        Adaptive Active Contour Model: a Localized Mutual Information Approach for Medical Image Segmentation

        Troubles are often met when traditional active contours extract boundaries of medical images with inhomogeneous bias and various noises. Focusing on such a circumstance, a localized mutual information active contour model is discussed in the paper. By defining neighborhood of each point on the level set, mutual information is introduced to describe the relationship between the zero level set and image field. A driving energy term is then generated by integrating all the information. In addition, an expanding energy and internal energy are designed to regularize the driving energy. Contrary to piecewise constant model, new model has a better command of driving the contours without initialization.
