        Impurity diagnosis of a KSTAR graphite divertor tile using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy technique

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been tested to diagnose impurity elements on a Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) divertor tile. Spectral lines of various impurity elements such as iron, chromium, and nickel were detected from the divertor surface. The variation of spectra with consecutive laser pulses demonstrates the potential for depth profiling analysis for the deposited impurity layer. The LIBS plasma parameters have been qualitatively determined from analysis of the relative line intensities and linewidths for each element. The validity of this analysis has been checked with atomic spectral simulations.</P>

        乾隆時期 宮廷畵家 徐揚의 長券山水畵에서 보이는 지리학적 서사 형성 연구

        이 글은 건륭 시기 제작된 쉬양의 「乾隆南巡圖」 제4권과 청대 水利圖와의 비교 분석을 통하여 쉬양이 시각화하려 했던 지리학의 내용을 파악하고 쉬양 작품에서의 지리학적 서사 형성 과정을 고찰한 논문이다. 「건륭남순도」 제4권에서는 건륭제가 江蘇省 淮安府 靑口 지역을 방문하여 자신의 치수 사업을 기념하는 장면을 묘사하고 있다. 「건륭남순도」보다 앞서 제작된 「南巡紀道圖」는 건륭제의 1차 남순을 전후하여 강남지역의 최신의 지리정보를 보여주고 있다. 두 그림에서의 회안부 청구지역의 지리 묘사는 건륭 1차 남순을 전후로 제작된 南下圖說 , 乾隆南巡紀程圖 등의 지도에서 보이는 최신의 지리정보를 충실하게 반영하고 있다. 두 작품은 일반 지도의 평면식 투영(mapping)에서 보여주기 힘든 城市와 水路 사이의 유기적 관계를 입체적으로 생생하게 보여주고 있다. 미술과 지리학의 경계를 넘나드는 쉬양의 장권산수화에 대한 연구는 중국 전근대시기 시각 지식 형성의 통섭적인 면모를 구명하는데 중요한 의의가 있다. The fourth scroll of The Qianlong Southern Inspection Tour which was painted by a court painter, Xu Yang, is based on a poem written by Emperor Qianlong. The scroll shows the achievements of flood control of the Qingkou region in Huianbu that Emperor Qianlong visited during his first southern inspection tour in 1751. This picture not only faithfully conveys the political narrative of the emperor, but also objectively represents topological information about the region. The achievements of the Qianlong Emperor, such as the extension of the East and West Dams and Gaojia dyke, are shown in the painting, which can be compared with the government documentary, as well as the river maps produced before and after the emperors first tour. This painting is very important in understanding the relationship between realistic representation and topological narrative in Qing Dynasty court painting. It shows how visualizing both the geological and historical information about the Huianfu region and the emperor's water management achievements became a political metaphor. In this paper, I will explore the method of constructing a cartographic narrative in the court painting by comparing the pictorial description shown in the fourth scroll of The Qianlong Southern Inspection Tour with the remaining Qing court documentaries and river maps. I will also examine the realistic manner in Xu yang’s paintings, which uses Western painting techniques to transmit geographic information.

        Combinatorial Effect of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Extracellular Vesicles in a Hydrogel on Cartilage Regeneration

        BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are used for tissue regeneration due to their wide differentiation capacity and anti-inflammatory effects. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from MSCs are also known for their regenerative effects as they contain nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and cytokines similar to those of parental cells. There are several studies on the use of MSCs or EVs for tissue regeneration. However, the combinatorial effect of human MSCs (hMSCs) and EVs is not clear. In this study, we investigated the combinatorial effect of hMSCs and EVs on cartilage regeneration via co-encapsulation in a hyaluronic-acid (HA)-based hydrogel. METHODS: A methacrylic-acid-based HA hydrogel was prepared to encapsulate hMSCs and EVs in hydrogels. Through in vitro and in vivo analyses, we investigated the chondrogenic potential of the HA hydrogel-encapsulated with hMSCs and EVs. RESULTS: Co-encapsulation of hMSCs with EVs in the HA hydrogel increased the chondrogenic differentiation of hMSCs and regeneration of damaged cartilage tissue compared with that of the HA hydrogel loaded with hMSCs only. CONCLUSION: Co-encapsulation of hMSCs and EVs in the HA hydrogel effectively enhances cartilage tissue regeneration due to the combinatorial therapeutic effect of hMSCs and EVs. Thus, in addition to cartilage tissue regeneration for the treatment of osteoarthritis, this approach would be a useful strategy to improve other types of tissue regeneration.

        Modulated model predictive current control of HERIC AFE converter equipped with LCL filter

        This paper proposes a modulated model predictive control (MMPC) of a highly efficient and reliable inverter concept (HERIC) active front end (AFE) converter equipped with an LCL filter. The proposed method is based on the model predictive control (MPC) concept and obtains the optimized duty cycle by using three-level switching states which can be implemented in the HERIC converter. By doing so, the AFE converter achieves fast and precise current control. In addition, the obtained duty cycle is not limited to the polarity of the grid voltage, so it is possible to track the current reference more accurately near the zero-crossing points. The first-order approximation model of the LCL filter is derived to simplify the controller design process with the proposed MMPC. After that, the MMPC algorithm is adopted based on this simplified model in the single-phase system. The switching pattern of the HERIC topology is also proposed considering the MMPC under changing polarity of the duty cycle. To verify the performance of the proposed scheme, a 3 kW HERIC AFE converter was built and tested. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only improves total harmonic distortion, but also achieves a fast-tracking performance.

        Dynamic Compressive Properties Obtained from a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar Test of Boryeong Shale

        Dynamic compressive properties of a Boryeong shale were evaluated by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar, and were compared with those of a Hwangdeung granite which is a typical hard rock. The results indicated that the dynamic compressive loading reduced the resistance to fracture. The dynamic compressive strength was lower in the shale than in the granite, and was raised with increasing strain rate by microcracking effect as well as strain rate strengthening effect. Since the number of microcracked fragments increased with increasing strain rate in the shale having laminated weakness planes, the shale showed the better fragmentation performance than the granite at high strain rates. The effect of transversely isotropic plane on compressive strength decreased with increasing strain rate, which was desirable for increasing the fragmentation performance. Thus, the shale can be more reliably applied to industrial areas requiring good fragmentation performance as the striking speed of drilling or hydraulic fracturing machines increased. The present dynamic compressive test effectively evaluated the fragmentation performance as well as compressive strength and strain energy density by controlling the air pressure, and provided an important idea on which rock was more readily fragmented under dynamically processing conditions such as high-speed drilling and blasting.

        LIN28A Is a Suppressor of ER-Associated Translation in Embryonic Stem Cells

        <P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>LIN28 plays a critical role in developmental transition, glucose metabolism, and tumorigenesis. At the molecular level, LIN28 is known to repress maturation of let-7 microRNAs and enhance translation of certain mRNAs. In this study, we obtain a genome-wide view of the molecular function of LIN28A in mouse embryonic stem cells by carrying out RNA crosslinking-immunoprecipitation-sequencing (CLIP-seq) and ribosome footprinting. We find that, in addition to let-7 precursors, LIN28A binds to a large number of spliced mRNAs. LIN28A recognizes AAGNNG, AAGNG, and less frequently UGUG, which are located in the terminal loop of a small hairpin. LIN28A is localized to the periendoplasmic reticulum (ER) area and inhibits translation of mRNAs that are destined for the ER, reducing the synthesis of transmembrane proteins, ER or Golgi lumen proteins, and secretory proteins.         Cytotoxicity of Ultra-pure TiO2 and ZnO Nanoparticles Generated by Laser Ablation

        This paper aims to address the cellular toxicity of ultra-pure titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) frequently employed in sunscreens as inorganic physical sun blockers to provide protection against adverse effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation including UVB (290-320 nm) and UVA (320-400 nm). In consideration that the production and the use of inorganic NPs have aroused many concerns and controversies regarding their safety and toxicity and that microsized TiO2 and ZnO have been increasingly replaced by TiO2 and ZnO NPs (< 100 nm), it is very important to directly investigate a main problem related to the intrinsic/ inherent toxicity of these NPs and/or their incompatibility with biological objects. In the present study, we took advantage of the laser-assisted method called laser ablation for generation of TiO2 and ZnO NPs. NPs were prepared through a physical process of irradiating solid targets in liquid phase, enabling verification of the toxicity of ultra-pure NPs with nascent surfaces free from any contamination. Our results show that TiO2 NPs are essentially non-poisonous and ZnO NPs are more toxic than TiO2 NPs based on the cell viability assays.
