      • Particle Size and Loading Effects on Particle-Laden Flow with Mono-sized Droplets

( Wei Hsiang Lai ),( Wei Fu Lu ),( Keh Chin Chang ) 한국액체미립화학회 2010 한국액체미립화학회 학술강연회 논문집 Vol.2010 No.-

Turbulence modulation is an interaction between phases that occurs in multiphase flow, and turbulence intensity traditionally can be represented as an indicator of turbulence modulation. Many researchers paid attention on the subject, but no coincident conclusion can be proposed. A general cognition is that larger particles induced wake to enhance the fluid turbulence intensity and smaller particles suppressed the fluid turbulence intensity since the fluid eddy imparted energy to the smaller particle. Here, the authors orderly changed particle size of dispersed phase and mass loading ratio (LR) to study the change on fluid turbulence intensity. Mono-dispersed droplets with a narrow size distribution were used to load into a homogeneous turbulence to investigate the turbulence modulation. Particle Dynamic Analyzer (PDA) was used to measure the particle (droplets and tracers) dynamic information. The particle concentration effect can be significantly observed. After coupling particle concentration and particle wetting area (πd2), a linear relationship can be obtained and it represents the turbulence modulation dominated the dilute two-phase flow as our expectation.

OPTIMIZED SPUTTERING POWER TO INCORPORATE WO3 INTO C–TiO2 NANOTUBES FOR HIGHLY VISIBLE PHOTORESPONSE PERFORMANCE

        CHIN WEI LAI,SRIMALA SREEKANTAN 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2012 NANO Vol.7 No.6

WO3-incorporated C-TiO2 nanotubes were successfully fabricated using radio frequency sputtering technique. The e®ects of sputtering powers on the nanotube morphology, crystal structure, optical properties and visible photoresponse were investigated. Lattice substitution of WO3species within the lattice of C?TiO2 nanotubes has an important function in maximizing the photocurrent generation. WO3-incorporated C?TiO2 nanotubes exhibit good visible photoresponse compared with C?TiO2 nanotubes. The interpretation of interband states has an important function in improving photoinduced electron transport.

Home Energy Management System for Interconnecting and Sensing of Electric Appliances

        ( Wei-ting Cho ),( Chin-feng Lai ),( Yueh-min Huang ),( Wei-tsong Lee ),( Sing-wei Huang ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2011 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.5 No.7

Due to the variety of household electric devices and different power consumption habits of consumers at present, general home energy management (HEM) systems suffer from the lack of dynamic identification of various household appliances and a unidirectional information display. This study presented a set of intelligent interconnection network systems for electric appliances, which can measure the power consumption of household appliances through a current sensing device based on OSGi platform. The system establishes the characteristics and categories of related electric appliances, and searches the corresponding cluster data and eliminates noise for recognition functionality and error detection mechanism of electric appliances by applying the clustering algorithm. The system also integrates household appliance control network services so as to control them according to users` power consumption plans or through mobile devices, thus realizing a bidirectional monitoring service. When the system detects an abnormal operating state, it can automatically shut off electric appliances to avoid accidents. In practical tests, the system reached a recognition rate of 95%, and could successfully control general household appliances through the ZigBee network.

Efficient Cluster Radius and Transmission Ranges in Corona-based Wireless Sensor Networks

        ( Wei Kuang Lai ),( Chung-shuo Fan ),( Chin-shiuh Shieh ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2014 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.8 No.4

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), hierarchical clustering is an efficient approach for lower energy consumption and extended network lifetime. In cluster-based multi-hop communications, a cluster head (CH) closer to the sink is loaded heavier than those CHs farther away from the sink. In order to balance the energy consumption among CHs, we development a novel cluster-based routing protocol for corona-structured wireless sensor networks. Based on the relaying traffic of each CH conveys, adequate radius for each corona can be determined through nearly balanced energy depletion analysis, which leads to balanced energy consumption among CHs. Simulation results demonstrate that our clustering approach effectively improves the network lifetime, residual energy and reduces the number of CH rotations in comparison with the MLCRA protocols.

Investigation of Interleukin-10 Promoter Polymorphisms and Interleukin-10 Levels in Children with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

( Man Chin Hua ),( Hsun Chin Chao ),( Tsung Chieh Yao ),( Ming Wei Lai ),( Jing Long Huang ),( The Patch Study Group ) 대한소화기학회 2013 Gut and Liver Vol.7 No.4

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate whether genetic variations at positions -1082, -819, and 592 in the interleukin (IL)-10 promoter affect IL-10 production in children with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Methods: Ninety-four children with IBS and 102 children as healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Genomic DNA was extracted, and IL-10 -1082, -819, and -592 polymorphisms were detected by direct sequencing from all participants. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 46 IBS children and 38 HCs were isolated and cultured with and without 5 ng/mL Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). IL-10 levels in the culture supernatants were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: There were no significant differences in the distribution of IL-10 -1082, -819, and -592 polymorphisms or in the allele and haplotype frequencies between IBS children and HCs. PBMCs from children with IBS had significantly lower IL-10 levels after LPS stimulation than PBMCs from HCs (p=0.011); however, LPS-induced IL-10 levels in PBMCs with different genotypes of -819 and 592 polymorphisms were not significantly different between IBS patients and HCs. Conclusions: Although significantly lower LPS-induced IL-10 production by PBMCs was noted, it is unlikely that IL-10 production was fully genetically determined in our IBS children. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01131442. (Gut Liver 2013; 7:430-436)

Design and Analysis of an Interactive Motion Simulator in Space Entertainment System

        ( Kuei-shu Hsu ),( Wei-ting Cho ),( Chin-feng Lai ),( Xiaofei Wang ),( Yueh-min Huang ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2012 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.6 No.1

In this paper, the analysis and design of a motion simulator (based on the approach taken by interactive virtual reality (VR) entertainment systems) is conducted. The main components of the system include a bilateral control interface, simulation and a motion simulator control scheme. The space entertainment system uses a virtual environment that enables operators to feel the actual feedback sensing and distorted motion from the virtual environment, just as they would in the real environment. The space entertainment system integrates the dynamics of the motion simulator and the virtual environment and the operator maneuvers a steering wheel to interact with the system. The multiple bilateral control schemes employ a dynamical controller, which is designed by considering the velocity and acceleration that the operator imposes on the joystick, the environmental changes imposed on the motion simulator. In addition, we develop a calculated method to evaluate the Ratio of the simulation results. It is shown that the proposed control scheme can improve the performance of the visual entertainment system. Experiments are conducted on the virtual reality entertainment system to validate the theoretical developments.

Interleukin-20 targets podocytes and is upregulated in experimental murine diabetic nephropathy

        Yu-Hsiang Hsu,Hsing-Hui Li,Junne-Ming Sung,Wei-Yu Chen,Ya-Chin Hou,Yun-Han Weng,Wei-Ting Lai,Chih-Hsing Wu,Ming-Shi Chang 생화학분자생물학회 2017 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.49 No.-

Interleukin (IL)-20, a proinflammatory cytokine of the IL-10 family, is involved in acute and chronic renal failure. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of IL-20 during diabetic nephropathy development. We found that IL-20 and its receptor IL-20R1 were upregulated in the kidneys of mice and rats with STZ-induced diabetes. In vitro, IL-20 induced MMP-9, MCP-1, TGF-β1 and VEGF expression in podocytes. IL-20 was upregulated by hydrogen peroxide, high-dose glucose and TGF-β1. In addition, IL-20 induced apoptosis in podocytes by activating caspase-8. In STZ-induced early diabetic nephropathy, IL-20R1-deficient mice had lower blood glucose and serum BUN levels and a smaller glomerular area than did wild-type controls. Anti-IL-20 monoclonal antibody (7E) treatment reduced blood glucose and the glomerular area and improved renal functions in mice in the early stage of STZ-induced diabetic nephropathy. ELISA showed that the serum IL-20 level was higher in patients with diabetes mellitus than in healthy controls. The findings of this study suggest that IL-20 induces cell apoptosis of podocytes and plays a role in the pathogenesis of early diabetic nephropathy.

Shape-controlled synthesis of zinc nanostructures mediating macromolecules for biomedical applications

        Seyyed Mojtaba Mousavi,Gity Behbudi,Ahmad Gholami,Seyyed Alireza Hashemi,Zohre Mousavi Nejad,Sonia Bahrani,Wei-Hung Chiang,Lai Chin Wei,Navid Omidifar 한국생체재료학회 2022 생체재료학회지 Vol.26 No.1

Zinc nanostructures (ZnONSs) have attracted much attention due to their morphological, physicochemical, and electrical properties, which were entailed for various biomedical applications such as cancer and diabetes treatment, anti-inflammatory activity, drug delivery. ZnONS play an important role in inducing cellular apoptosis, triggering excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and releasing zinc ions due to their inherent nature and specific shape. Therefore, several new synthetic organometallic method has been developed to prepare ZnO crystalline nanostructures with controlled size and shape. Zinc oxide nanostructures’ crystal size and shape can be controlled by simply changing the physical synthesis condition such as microwave irradiation time, reaction temperature, and TEA concentration at reflux. Physicochemical properties which are determined by the shape and size of ZnO nanostructures, directly affect their biological applications. These nanostructures can decompose the cell membrane and accumulate in the cytoplasm, which leads to apoptosis or cell death. In this study, we reviewed the various synthesis methods which affect the nano shapes of zinc particles, and physicochemical properties of zinc nanostructures that determined the shape of zinc nanomaterials. Also, we mentioned some macromolecules that controlled their physicochemical properties in a green and biological approaches. In addition, we present the recent progress of ZnONSs in the biomedical fields, which will help centralize biomedical fields and assist their future research development.
