Cell death and survival are tightly controlled through the highly coordinated activation/inhibition of diverse signal transduction pathways to insure normal development and physiology. Imbalance between cell death and survival often leads to autoimmune diseases and cancer. Death receptors sense extracellular signals to induce caspase-mediated apoptosis. Acting upstream of CED-3 family proteases, such as caspase-3, Bcl-2 prevents apoptosis. Using short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs), we suppressed Bcl-2 expression in Jurkat T cells, and this increased TCR-triggered AICD and enhanced TNFR gene expre-ssion. T cells play an important role in adaptiveimmune responses that destroy pathogens or infected cells. Therefore, regulation of T cell activity is important invarious diseases, such as autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivity,and cancer. The conjugation of small ubiquitinrelatedmodifier (SUMO) is a post-translational proteinmodification that regulates activity, stability, and subcellulartranslocation of target proteins. In this study, CD8? Tcells overexpressing SUMO2 showed greater proliferationand cytotoxic activity against tumor cells in the presence ofIL-6 than wild-type CD8? T cells in vitro. These CD8? Tcell functions were suppressed during treatment withMEK1 or PI3K-specific inhibitors. Therefore, our findingssuggest that IL-6-derived signaling pathways, including theMEK1 and PI3K pathways, are upregulated by SUMO2overexpression. However, transgenic expression ofSUMO2 in T cells did not modulate Th1/2 balance. Collectively,our results showed that SUMO2-Tg promotescytotoxic activity against tumor cells by increasing theproliferation and cytotoxicity of CD8? T cells.
Antifungal Activity of Some Essential Oils against Four Fungi

5種 管束植物 즉, Citrus medica, Trachyspermum ammi, Nepeta hindostana, Amomum subulatum과 Hyptis suaveolens로부터 抽出한 정유(精油)를 처리하여 4종 곰팡이에 대한 抗菌力 실험을 실시하였다. 그 결과 C. medica, N. hindostana and T. ammi의 精油가 곰팡이의 생장을 크게 抑制했으며 A. subulatum과 H. suaveolens의 정유는 억제력이 적었다. 植物體로부터 추출한 精油와 合成抗菌劑, 즉 Dithane M-45, Ceresan, Captan과 비교하여 본 결과 본 실험에 사용한 天然化學物質이 더 효과적으로 곰팡이 생장을 抑制했다. Essential oils isolated from five angiospermic plants viz. Citrus medica, Trachyspermum ammi, Nepeta hindostana, Amomum subulatum, and Hyptis suaveolens have been tested against four fungi viz. Aspergillus awamori, Alternaria matini, Aspergillus nidulans and Penicillium sp. at 100ppm, 500ppm, and 1,000ppm. The oils of C. medica, N. hindostana and T. ammi were found to be effective in checking growth of fungi, while the Hyptis and Amomum oils were observed to be the worst effective. The antifungal potency of some of the oils has been compared with synthetic fungicides viz. Dithane M-45, Ceresan and Captan.
Phytotoxic Effects on selected Species by KDICical Substances of Artemisia Princeps var. orientalis

To verify allelopathic effects of Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, a number of laboratory experiments have been performed. Aqueous extracts of leaves, stems and roots of the above species inhibited the seed germination and seedling growth of experimental species, receptor plants. In general, the higher was the concentration of the extracts, the lower was the germination and the growth ratio. Volatile substances released from leaves of the donor plants also inhibited the seed germination and the radicle elongation of receptor plants. Therefore, to find out the inhibitory substances emitted from the wormwood, gas chromatography was employed. As a result of the analysis, 17 KDICical substances were isolated from the leaves and most of them were identified as phenolic compounds.

Background Breast reconstruction using an extended latissimus dorsi (eLD) flap can supplement more volume than reconstruction using various local flaps after partial mastectomy, and it is a valuable surgical method since the reconstruction area is not limited. However, when performing reconstruction, the surgeon should consider latissimus dorsi (LD) volume reduction due to postoperative chemotherapy (POCTx) and postoperative radiotherapy (PORTx). To evaluate the effect of POCTx and PORTx on LD volume reduction, the effects of each therapy—both separately and jointly—need to be demonstrated. The present study quantified LD volume reduction in patients who underwent POCTx and PORTx after receiving breast-conserving surgery (BCS) with an eLD flap. Methods This study included 48 patients who received immediate breast reconstruction using an eLD flap from January 2013 to March 2017, had chest computed tomography (CT) 7–10 days after surgery and 10–14 months after radiotherapy completion, and were observed for more than 3 years postoperatively. One surgeon performed the breast reconstruction procedures, and measurements of breast volume were obtained from axial CT views, using a picture archiving and communication system. A P-value <0.05 was the threshold for statistical significance. Results The average volume reduction of LD at 10–14 months after completing POCTx and PORTx was 64.5% (range, 42.8%–81.4%) in comparison to the volume measured 7–10 days after surgery. This change was statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusions Based on the findings of this study, when harvesting an eLD flap, surgeons should anticipate an average LD volume reduction of 64.5% if chemotherapy and radiotherapy are scheduled after BCS with an eLD flap.

Spinal disorders associated with medico-legal issues are increasing. We present three patients with possible medical dispute or ethical dilemma. A pregnant woman aborted her baby after an operation for intractable pain from lumbar disc herniations. A man received an unnecessary radiation therapy for a spinal infection missdiagnosed as a metastatic tumor. A urinary incontinence developed after an inappropriate surgery in a woman with acute lumbar sprain. These accidents can be happened for any doctors. Research reports on soil during the years from 1906 to 2012 have been analyzed to understand the role and pattern of soil research in agriculture. The number of research reports in relation with the key word of soils were 2,211 cases and classified in accordance with the criteria of research area, research subject, and research place of report papers. During the 40 years from 1906 to 1946, research work on soil chemistry was reached 62%, highest in the research area. In the case of research subject, research reports on soil fertility and soil nutrients was highest as 42.2%, and the next subject on soil salt and desalinization was about 19.5%. Research places were in the order of paddy as 34.1%, upland as 23.7%, and reclaimed soil as 22.5%. From 1953 to 2012 during 60 years, in the research area report papers were mainly concentrated on chemistry area as 32% and the next was physics as 26%, and environment as 12%. In the case of research subject during the same period, nutrient management report was reached 21.1%, and soil improvement on chemical and physical properties for optimum crop growth was 11.9%. Soil survey and data base establishment report was 8.6%. Research place were in the order of upland as 34.9%, paddy as 25.7%, and vinyl house as 12.5%, which showed reversed pattern compared to that of before 40 years.
