<P>Th17 cells promote inflammatory reactions, whereas regulatory T (Treg) cells inhibit them. Thus, the Th17/Treg cell balance is critically important in inflammatory diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this balance are unclear. Here, we demonstrate that casein kinase 2 (CK2) is a critical determinant of the Th17/Treg cell balance. Both the inhibition of CK2 with a specific pharmacological inhibitor, CX-4945, and its small hairpin RNA (shRNA)-mediated knockdown suppressed Th17 cell differentiation but reciprocally induced Treg cell differentiation <I>in vitro</I>. Moreover, CX-4945 ameliorated the symptoms of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and reduced Th17 cell infiltration into the central nervous system. Mechanistically, CX-4945 inhibited the IL-6/STAT3 and Akt/mTOR signaling pathways. Thus, CK2 has a crucial role in regulating the Th17/Treg balance.</P>
A Reconstruction Method of Blood Flow Velocity in Left Ventricle Using Color Flow Ultrasound

<P>Vortex flow imaging is a relatively new medical imaging method for the dynamic visualization of intracardiac blood flow, a potentially useful index of cardiac dysfunction. A reconstruction method is proposed here to quantify the distribution of blood flow velocity fields inside the left ventricle from color flow images compiled from ultrasound measurements. In this paper, a 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a mass source term is proposed to utilize the measurable color flow ultrasound data in a plane along with the moving boundary condition. The proposed model reflects out-of-plane blood flows on the imaging plane through the mass source term. The boundary conditions to solve the system of equations are derived from the dimensions of the ventricle extracted from 2D echocardiography data. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated numerically using synthetic flow data acquired from simulating left ventricle flows. The numerical simulations show the feasibility and potential usefulness of the proposed method of reconstructing the intracardiac flow fields. Of particular note is the finding that the mass source term in the proposed model improves the reconstruction performance.</P>
Color Centers and Charge Transfer Luminescence in a Yb3+-Doped PbWO4 Single Crystal

Optical absorption and induced color centers are discussed on the base of irradiation and annealing treatment in Yb3+ -doped lead-tungstate crystals. The photoluminescence spectra (under UV excitation), the X-ray excited luminescence, and the IR fluorescence (under LD 940-nm infrared excitation) of Yb3+ ions in the PbWO4 crystal was studied at room temperature. irradiation with a dose of 105 Gy and subsequent annealing in air could lead to a valence change of the Yb3+ ions and evolvement of color centers in the crystal. Based on the irradiation-induced absorption spectra and annealing, F and F+ centers perturbed by Yb3+ ions are proposed and could be responsible for shaping the absorption and emission spectra of Yb3+ ions in PbWO4 crystals. X-ray excited luminescence measurements were also performed and showed a charge transfer luminescence in heavily doped PWO4 : Yb3+ (2.0 mol%). Annealing treatments in air exerted a distinct influence on the intrinsic luminescence in PbWO4, the IR emission, and the lifetime of Yb3+ ions, but did not show an influence on the charge transfer luminescence. Contrarily, -irradiation only shows an influence on the charge transfer luminescence of Yb3+ ions, and has no obvious effect on the intrinsic luminescence of PbWO4.

The thermal management device using flow boiling in the micro-gap is efficient because of its simple manufacturing process, high heat transfer performance. The heat transfer coefficient and critical heat flux can be greatly improved if the flow boiling heat transfer is performed using the micro-scale porous structure on the surface of the gap. This study analyzed the flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in the manifold structure which can supply a fluid to the micro-gap coated by copper inverse opal. An inverse opal structure with a pore size of 4.8μm was electrodeposited on the surface of the micro-gap at a height of 10μm, and a flow rate of 100 to 300 ml/min was supplied through the manifold. Water was used as the working fluid, and the temperature of the heater surface was measured with an IR camera and the temperature of the entire area was averaged.
Photo-Bleaching Eect in Divalent Samarium-Doped Alkaline-Earth Fluorohalides

When a CW laser was focused on a sample of divalent samarium-doped alkaline-earth uorohalides (Mg0:5Sr0:5FCl0:5Br0:5 : Sm2+ or BaFCl0:5Br0:5 : Sm2+), the uorescence intensity of Sm2+ ions decreased rapidly. Under irradiation from a 488-nm laser with a power density of 10 W/cm2, the intensity of the 5D0 ! 7F0 (Sm2+) emission decreased as much as 96 % of its initial intensity in 30 minutes (for an X-ray-reduced sample). The so-called photo-bleaching eect can be in uenced by the processes used for sample synthesis, such as the reduction method, the grinding process or X-ray irradiation. The decreasing curves obtained in the photo-bleaching experiments were tted, a biexponential decreasing mode was found, which included a fast decrease (time constant tens of seconds) and a slow decrease (time constant hundreds of seconds). There was no evidence to support the divalent samarium ions being photo-ionized into trivalent samarium ions in the photobleaching process. The most probable mechanism for the photo-bleaching eect involves structural defects and color centers in the samples.
Fabrications and photoluminescence of Sm2+ -doped aluminosilicate thin films

Sm2+-doped 10Al2O390SiO2 thin lms were prepared by coating on Al-deposited Si(100) wafers with a sol solution and heating in air, as well as in a H2 atmosphere. The prepared thin films were examined with a scanning electron microscope for observing their morphologies, and the photoluminescence spectra of Sm2+ ions were measured. The morphologies of the thin lms were found to be highly dependent upon the samarium precursors and the emission peaks due to the 5D0 ! 7F0 transitions of Sm2+ ions were highly dependent on the reduction processes of the Sm3+ ions and the samarium precursors.

KSrPO4:Eu2+x, Mn2+y and KSr(1-x-y)PO4:Eu2+x, Mn2+y phosphors (x = 0.01 and y = 0, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03) were prepared using a solid state reaction method by taking non-stoichiometric and stoichiometric amounts, respectively, of Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions. The photoluminescence (PL) properties and the energy transfer Eu2+ → Mn2+ of the prepared samples were investigated for UV-based white-light-emitting diodes (UV-based LEDs). The emission spectrum shows an intense blue emission at 430 nm (λex = 356 nm) with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 40 nm for the KSrPO4:Eu2+x (x = 0.01) phosphor and at 427 nm (λex = 356 nm) with a FWHM of 31 nm for the KSr(1-x)PO4:Eu2+x (x = 0.01) phosphor. The efficiency of the energy transfer Eu2+ →Mn2+ of KSr(0.99-y)PO4:Eu2+0.01, Mn2+y (y = 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03) was very low. The observed results are discussed in connection with the occupation of sites by Eu2+ ions and the KSrPO4:Eu2+x phosphor prepared by using the non-stoichiometric doping method has been suggested to be more efficient for white-light UV-based LEDs.

Ku J, Lee JH, Han K, Kim SI, Kang YJ, Park ES: Validity and reliability of cognitive assessment using virtual environment technology in patients with stroke. OBJECTIVES:: We assessed the validity and reliability of a virtual environment technology (VET)-based cognitive assessment program that was developed as a measurement tool of cognitive abilities in patients after a stroke. DESIGN:: Twenty participants diagnosed with stroke caused by unilateral brain lesions were enrolled to assess the VET program’s validity and test-retest reliability. Participants underwent evaluation by paper-based neuropsychological tests including the Korean Mini-Mental Status Examination, the Korean-Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the Motor Free Visual Perception Test, Rey-Kim Memory Test, and Kim’s Frontal-Executive Neuropsychologic Test as well as the VET-based cognitive assessment. Major variables and indices of the VET program were calculated. The VET program validity was evaluated using a simple correlation analysis between variables from the VET program and conventional paper-based neuropsychological measurements, and the reliability was evaluated by investigating the test-retest correlation coefficients. RESULTS:: Major variables and indices of the VET program in patients with stroke correlated significantly with the related scores of paper-based neuropsychological tests. In addition, the test-retest reliability analysis revealed that the correlation coefficients ranged from 0.528 to 0.926. CONCLUSION:: The VET-based cognitive assessment program showed adequate reliability and validity as a method of cognitive assessment in patients after stroke.
