The Genealogy of Korean Modernism in Poetry : Focus on Translations of W. B. Yeats

KIM HANSUNG,CHOI JUNGA 계명대학교 한국학연구원 2018 Acta Koreana Vol.21 No.2

This article describes the generational perspectives revealed in the views of three Korean poets, representing three generations of poetic circles, through their appropriations of the Irish poet W. B. Yeats, who experienced colonial rule as they did. Within the history of modern Korean poetry, Kim Ŏk (b. 1896) stands as a representative of the 1920s, Kim Kirim (b. 1908) of the 1930s, and Kim Suyŏng (1921–1968) of the postcolonial years, especially the 1960s. Though different in their styles and perspectives, they shared the roles of poet, literary critic, and translator and were flagship figures in their respective eras. Looking into the works and poetics of these three poets is tantamount to exploring the history of modern Korean poetry spanning the period between the 1920s and 1960s. Drawing on the fact that all three poets were interested in translating and interpreting Yeats, this article aims to trace the genealogy of Korean modernist poetry by exploring the generational differences in their views on poetry through their mediation of Yeats.

Association of serum mineral parameters with mortality in hemodialysis patients: Data from the Korean endstage renal disease registry

( Yunmi Kim ),( Kyung Don Yoo ),( Hyo Jin Kim ),( Junga Koh ),( Yeonsil Yu ),( Young Joo Kwon ),( Gheun-ho Kim ),( Tae-hyun Yoo ),( Joongyub Lee ),( Dong-chan Jin ),( Bum Soon Choi ),( Yeong Hoon Kim 대한신장학회 2018 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.37 No.3

Background: We investigated the associations between mineral metabolism parameters and mortality to identify optimal targets in Korean hemodialysis patients. Methods: Among hemodialysis patients registered in the end-stage renal disease registry of the Korean Society of Nephrology between March 2012 and June 2017, those with serum calcium, phosphorus, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) measured at enrollment were included. Association of serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, and iPTH with all-cause mortality was analyzed. Results: Among 21,433 enrolled patients, 3,135 (14.6%) died during 24.8 ± 14.5 months of follow-up. After multivariable adjustment, patients in the first quintile of corrected calcium were associated with lower mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.84; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.71-0.99; P = 0.003), while those in the fifth quintile were associated with higher mortality (HR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.20-1.61; P < 0.001) compared with those in the third quintile. For phosphorus, only the lowest quintile was significantly associated with increased mortality (HR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.08-1.43; P = 0.003). The lowest (HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.02-1.36; P = 0.026) and highest quintiles of iPTH (HR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.05-1.46; P = 0.013) were associated with increased mortality. For target counts achieved according to the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guideline, patients who did not achieve any mineral parameter targets hadhigher mortality than those who achieved all three targets (HR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.12-1.67; P = 0.003). Conclusion: In Korean hemodialysis patients, high serum calcium, low phosphorus, and high and low iPTH levels were associated with increased all-cause mortality.

Statistical Analysis of Pc1 Pulsations Observed by a BOH Magnetometer

Kim, Jiwoo,Hwang, Junga,Kim, Hyangpyo,Yi, Yu The Korean Space Science Society 2020 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.37 No.1

Pc1 pulsations are important to consider for the interpretation of wave-particle interactions in the Earth's magnetosphere. In fact, the wave properties of these pulsations change dynamically when they propagate from the source region in the space to the ground. A detailed study of the wave features can help understanding their time evolution mechanisms. In this study, we statistically analyzed Pc1 pulsations observed by a Bohyunsan (BOH) magneto-impedance (MI) sensor located in Korea (L = 1.3) for ~one solar cycle (November 2009-August 2018). In particular, we investigated the temporal occurrence ratio of Pc1 pulsations (considering seasonal, diurnal, and annual variations in the solar cycle), their wave properties (e.g., duration, peak frequency, and bandwidth), and their relationship with geomagnetic activities by considering the Kp and Dst indices in correspondence of the Pc1 pulsation events. We found that the Pc1 waves frequently occurred in March in the dawn (1-3 magnetic local time (MLT)) sector, during the declining phase of the solar cycle. They generally continued for 2-5 minutes, reaching a peak frequency of ~0.9 Hz. Finally, most of the pulsations have strong dependence on the geomagnetic storm and observed during the early recovery phase of the geomagnetic storm.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Major Satisfaction

Kim, Jungae,Cho, Euiyoung The International Promotion Agency of Culture Tech 2018 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.6 No.2

The purpose of this study was to analyze general characteristics and empathy factors of nursing student's major satisfaction. Participants in this study were 235 students from both located in J do and C do Universities. The research method was a cross-sectional survey and the survey period was from September 1 to 10, 2017. The questionnaire was used to investigate general characteristics, empathy, and major satisfaction. The analysis was based on frequency analysis, p value of t or F value, Pearson correlation, regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. The result of this study were as follows: (1) The C University showed higher satisfaction than J University(3.44), (2) the factors affecting major satisfaction were school location, grade, religion, cognitive empathy, and emotional empathy correlated, Regression analysis was used to examine factors that correlated with major satisfaction, followed by hierarchical regression analysis to identify the most influential factors. (3) The result of the analysis showed that the greatest influence factors on major satisfaction were the University location(${\beta}=.325$, p<.01), the cognitive empathy (${\beta}=.287$, p<.01), and the next order was negative grade(${\beta}=-.230$, p<.01). Based on the results of this stud, the following conclusions can be drawn. The most influential factor in the major satisfaction was the school location, but this was an irreversible factor. Therefore, if the cognitive empathy factor and grades are corrected, it can be said that it can increase the satisfaction of major in nursing University students. In this study, it was emphasized that cognitive empathy contained in the course of nursing education program and suggested guidance on major satisfaction in lower grades.

Foreign student life experience in Korea after COVID-19

Jungae Kim,Milang Kim 국제문화기술진흥원 2020 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.8 No.4

This study was a phenomenological qualitative research that analyzed the experiences of Korean students studying in Korea after the COVID-19 incident. Participants in this study consisted of 22 international students aged 20 to 40 attending the International Exchange Center at C University. The interview period was from September 10, 2020 to October 10, 2020. Giogi qualitative research method was used to analyze vivid experiences of international students. As a result of the analysis, 26 semantic units, 7 subcomponents were derived. The description of the general structure sentence of phenomenology was a description of the meaning of experience from the perspective of participants, and the context and structure descriptions were integrated. The results of this study showed that: The students who came to Korea to study were concerned about Korea in various ways, but they had to adjust to unexpected changes in education methods, anxious about the unexpected COVID-19 disaster. Participants chose to study in Korea based on existing information, so they felt anxiety, regret, fear, and frustration over sudden changes, but taking online classes helped them learn repeatedly and voluntarily became an experience that suited their learning speed. As commuting time has decreased, they were more opportunities to make money in Korea also. Based on the results of this study, the following is suggested: First, the government should establish systematic online infection prevention measures for international students who have poor Korean language skills in preparation for unexpected disasters. Second, non-face-to-face teaching methods should be prepared with the same weight in the face-to-face teaching methods that have been carried out so far in preparation for unexpected disasters.

      • Proxy Decision Making in Suicidal Patients

        Kim, Claire Junga,Choi, Yoon Hee,Bae, Hyun A 이화여자대학교 생명의료법연구소 2012 BIOMEDICAL LAW & ETHICS Vol.6 No.2

Respecting patient’s autonomy and abiding by rules of confidentiality are both important in patient-physician relationships. However, balancing between these rules requires comprehensive assessment of other contextual factors, such as the patient’s best interest, his/her real intention, possible harms and suitability of proxy in case of the patient’s becoming unconscious. In this case, a 35-year-old female patient who attempted suicide asked the clinicians not to inform her family members, and her boyfriend who is not a legally authorized guardian was to be making proxy decision. Clinicians should judge that her boyfriend to be sufficient to make further medical decision for her or not. To solve these conflicts, possible harms should be identified, weighed and finally judged to be overridden by the rule of confidentiality and autonomy. And we reviewed the Korean legal system about proxy decision making in medical practice.

      • Medical Students’ Cheating and Its Implication on Their Professionalism

Kim, Claire Junga,Choi, Kyungsuk Ewha Institute for Biomedical Law & Ethics 2011 BIOMEDICAL LAW & ETHICS Vol.5 No.1

Medical students are more prone to be in vulnerable situation for cheating. Their cheating has graver implications than that of laypersons. Their cheating ends up with deterioration of their integrity, failure to exercise their autonomy, incurrence of lessqualified physicians, and undesirable relationship among future coworkers. In this sense, it is direly needed to take a close look at the contexts and reasons of their cheating to improve the situation. Complex matters are involved in medical students’ cheating, such as students’ false rationalization and the psychology of students that makes them blind to their obligation. Therefore, improving external factors would not be sufficient. Rather, approaching to cheating issues in terms of professionalism education will bring about significant effect on medical students. Faculty members should utilize the exam as learning opportunity where students can experience professional virtues. Additional advantages are also expected, such as reaching the consensus in professional virtues and finding the proper teaching materials for pre-clinical period.
