SEO, Young-Sun,KIM, Dae-Young,CHO, Jinsung The Institute of Electronics, Information and Comm 2010 IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS - Vol.93 No.4

WBANs provide communication services in the vicinity of the human body. Since WBANs utilize both MICS frequency band for implant medical applications and ISM frequency band for medical and consumer electronics (CE) applications, MAC protocols in WBAN should be designed considering flexibility between medical and CE applications. In this letter, we identify the requirements of WBAN MAC protocols and propose a WBAN MAC protocol which satisfies the requirements. In order to provide transmission flexibility for various applications, we present the dynamic CFP allocation and opportunity period. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed protocol achieves improved throughput and latency in WBAN environment compared with IEEE 802.15.4.

Abstract

Selective retrieval of sequence-verified oligonucleotides (oligos) from next-generation sequencing (NGS) flow cells, termed megacloning, promises accurate and reliable gene synthesis. However, gene assembly requires a complete collection of overlapping sense and nonsense oligos, and megacloning does not typically guarantee the complete production of sequence-verified oligos. Therefore, missing oligos must be provided via repetitive rounds of megacloning, which introduces a bottleneck for scaled-up efforts at gene assembly. Here, we introduce the concept of high-depth tiled oligo design to successfully utilize megacloned oligos for gene synthesis. Using acquired oligos from a single round of the megacloning process, we assembled 72 of 81 target Cas9-coding gene variants. We further validated 62 of these cas9 constructs, and deposited the plasmids to Addgene for subsequent functional characterization by the scientific community. This study demonstrates the utility of using sequence-verified oligos for DNA assembly and provides a practical and reliable optimized method for high-throughput gene synthesis.

As the functionality of portable devices are being enhanced and the performance is being greatly improved, power dissipations of battery-driven portable devices are being increased. So, an efficient power management for reducing their power consumption is needed. In this paper, we propose a window-based DVS algorithm for MPEG Player. The proposed algorithm maintains the recently frame information and execution time received from MPEG player in window queue and dynamically adjusts (frequency, voltage) level based on window queue information. Our algorithm can be implemented in the common multimedia player as a module. We employed well-known MPlayer for the measurement of performance. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm reduces energy consumption by 56% on maximal performance.
Vol.36 No.1D

Abstract

Integrated circuits or miniaturized portable electronics require adaptive thermal control under certain temperatures. Thermal metamaterials (TMs), which artificially manipulate the heat passing through mediums have shown innovative thermal functions at a continuum scale. However, they cannot implement tunable thermal functions at local spots depending on the operating temperatures. Herein, we introduce temperature-responsive TMs enabled by modular design of thermally tunable unit cells. As ambient temperature changes, tunable thermal shifters can dynamically turn on/off their intrinsic functions to guide anisotropic heat transfer through the transition of thermal conductivities from the inner phase change nanocomposites (PCNCs), and their modular design realizes temperature-responsive thermal shields having switchable functions. The layered structures of stainless steel and the PCNC of n-octadecane embedding carbon nanotubes and copper powder are fabricated as tunable thermal shifters. Their 4 × 4 modular structure confirms the feasibility of temperature-responsive TMs, verified by the disappearance and appearance of thermally shielded regimes at low- and high-temperature ranges. The potential use of the developed concept was demonstrated as tunable interfaces between thermal dissipation and insulation for protecting temperature-sensitive components. This work can offer new capabilities for conventional passive TMs, such as local thermal adaptation, active thermal control interface, and thermal disturbance mitigation.

Highlights

Temperature responsive thermal metamaterials (TMs) comprising of tunable cells were developed.

Tunable shifters as unit cells turn on/off anisotropic heat transfer as temperature changes.

Tunable shifters were realized in layered structures of metals and phase change nanocomposites.

Modular 4-by-4 cells as one TM perform dynamic thermal shielding by temperature changes.

The potential use was demonstrated as a tunable interface of thermal dissipation-insulation.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
