Towards a System Theoretical Understanding of the Parasport Context

Jacqueline Martins Patatas,Veerle De Bosscher,Sebastiaan De Cocq,Shaundre Jacobs,David Legg 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2021 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.6 No.1

Contextual factors are fundamental but often overlooked ele- ments of parasport that can introduce various complexities within the parasport system. The purpose of this paper is to identify and categorize contextual factors that influence the parasport system and to examine the extent to which these factors influence the development of para-athletes’ pathways. Drawing from a system theoretical perspective, this research uses data gathered from 32 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders of the Brazilian Paralympic sports system. Thematic coding resulted in the identi- fication of nine main themes that constitute the contextual fac- tors of the Brazilian parasport system. The findings confirm that insofar as parasport is embedded in the complex cultural and national environment, it is not possible to understand parasport and the para-athlete trajectories without understanding the coun- try’s particular context with respect to disability. This paper thus provides insights toward better understanding the relationship between the diversity within the parasport systems and the socio- cultural context of a country.

A redshifted codon-optimized firefly luciferase is a sensitive reporter for bioluminescence imaging

        Caysa, Henrike,Jacob, Roland,Muther, Nadine,Branchini, Bruce,Messerle, Martin,Soling, Ariane Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.1

Bioluminescence imaging has evolved as a powerful tool for monitoring biological processes in vivo. As transmission efficiency of light through tissue increases greatly for wavelengths above 600 nm we examined whether a redshifted codon-optimized firefly luciferase (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 615 nm) could be successfully employed as a sensitive reporter in mammalian cells. To this end, unmodified codon-optimized luciferase (${\lambda}_{max}$ = 557 nm) as well as the red-emitting S284T mutant luciferase were expressed simultaneously in human glioma cells in vitro as well as in quadriceps muscles of mice in vivo. We show here that activity of the redshifted enzyme in human glioma cell culture approached approximately one-fourth of that seen with the unmodified enzyme. In contrast, light emission by the red-emitting luciferase in vivo was generally more efficient than that produced by its unmodified counterpart, most likely due to reduced absorption of red light by tissue. The mean ratio of light emission produced by the redshifted luciferase to that of the unmodified enzyme in vivo was~3. Application of this new redshifted luciferase together with other optical reporters may be of considerable importance to biological research as it allows for imaging of deeper tissues as well as simultaneous monitoring of two molecular events in vitro and in vivo if appropriate filter sets are employed.

A new suggestion for determining 2D porosities in DEM studies

        Wang, Zhijie,Ruiken, Axel,Jacobs, Felix,Ziegler, Martin Techno-Press 2014 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.7 No.6

In discrete element modeling, 2D software has been widely used in order to gain further insights into the fundamental mechanisms with less computational time. The porosities used in 2D DEM studies should be determined with appropriate approaches based on 3D laboratory porosities. This paper summarizes the main approaches for converting porosities from 3D to 2D for DEM studies and theoretical evaluations show that none of the current approaches can be widely used in dealing with soil mechanical problems. Therefore, a parabolic equation and a criterion have been suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in this paper. Moreover, a case study has been used to validate that the 2D porosity obtained from the above suggestion to be rational with both the realistic contact force distribution in the specimen and the good agreement of the DEM simulation results of direct shear tests with the corresponding experimental data. Therefore, the parabolic equation and the criterion are suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in a wide range of polydisperse particle systems, especially in dealing with soil mechanical problems.

Ultra Broadband Indoor Channel Measurements and Calibrated Ray Tracing Propagation Modeling at THz Frequencies

        Sebastian Priebe,Marius Kannicht,Martin Jacob,Thomas Kürner 한국통신학회 2013 Journal of communications and networks Vol.15 No.6

Ultra broadband communication systems operated atTHz frequencies will require the thorough knowledge of the propagationchannel. Therefore, an extensive measurement campaignof 50 GHz wide indoor radio channels is presented for the frequenciesbetween 275 and 325 GHz. Individual ray paths are resolvedspatially according to angle of arrival and departure. A MIMOchannel is recorded in a 2×2 configuration. An advanced frequency domain ray tracing approach is usedto deterministically simulate the THz indoor propagation channel. The ray tracing results are validated with the measurement data. Moreover, the measurements are utilized for the calibration of theray tracing algorithm. Resulting ray tracing accuracies are discussed.

Single-Position Robotic-Assisted Prone Lateral Fusion: Technical Description and Feasibility

        Yeo Quan You,Pham Martin H.,Oh Jacob Yoong-Leong 대한척추외과학회 2024 Asian Spine Journal Vol.18 No.1

Single-position lateral interbody fusion surgery has gained traction over the years because of reduced surgical time and improved operating theater workflow. With the introduction of robotics in spine surgery, surgeons can place pedicle screws with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency; moreover, the robot allows us to localize the disk space and perform endplate preparation accurately with minimal radiation. In this study, we discuss the potential synergistic benefits of integrating robotic-assisted spine surgery and singleposition prone lateral surgery. We share our technique and provide the operative nuances of using the Mazor X Stealth Edition system (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA). We highlighted the potential synergistic benefits of integrating both the prone lateral and robotic-assisted surgical techniques, including the challenges encountered. This approach is not meant to replace other techniques or be used in all patients. Instead, it adds to our arsenal for managing spine fusion.

High density lipoprotein mimicking nanoparticles for atherosclerosis

        Chen Jun,Zhang Xixi,Millican Reid,Creutzmann Jacob Emil,Martin Sean,Jun Ho-Wook 나노기술연구협의회 2020 Nano Convergence Vol.7 No.4

Atherosclerosis is a major contributor to many cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease, making it the leading cause of death worldwide. High-density lipoproteins (HDL), also known as “good cholesterol”, have been shown to demonstrate anti-atherosclerotic efficacy through the removal of cholesterol from foam cells in atherosclerotic plaques. Because of the excellent anti-atherosclerotic properties of HDL, in the past several years, there has been tremendous attention in designing HDL mimicking nanoparticles (NPs) of varying functions to image, target, and treat atherosclerosis. In this review, we are summarizing the recent progress in the development of HDL mimicking NPs and their applications for atherosclerosis.

Progress towards stable blue light-emitting polymers

        Andrew C. Grimsdale,Jingying Zhang,Klaus M?len,Luke Oldridge,Martin Gaal,Emil J. W. List,Josemon Jacob 한국물리학회 2004 Current Applied Physics Vol.4 No.2-4

New routes have been developed for the synthesis of blue-emitting conjugated polymers designed to show stable blue-emission inLEDs. Fluorenes bearing polyphenylene dendrimer side-chains have been made by a new route in which the dendrimer substituentsare built up on a biphenyl which is then ring-closed to give the uorene. This route can be used to make uorenes with a range offunctionalised rst and second generation dendrimer substituents, as monomers for new blue-emitting polymers. Polyindenouo-renes bearing aryl substituents have been made and found to display much stabler blue-emission than previous polyindenouorenes.

Examining the Predictability of the Stratospheric Sudden Warming of January 2013 Using Multiple NWP Systems

        Tripathi, Om P.,Baldwin, Mark,Charlton-Perez, Andrew,Charron, Martin,Cheung, Jacob C. H.,Eckermann, Stephen D.,Gerber, Edwin,Jackson, David R.,Kuroda, Yuhji,Lang, Andrea AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY 2016 Monthly weather review Vol.144 No.5

The first multimodel study to estimate the predictability of a boreal sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) is performed using five NWP systems. During the 2012/13 boreal winter, anomalous upward propagating planetary wave activity was observed toward the end of December, which was followed by a rapid deceleration of the westerly circulation around 2 January 2013, and on 7 January 2013 the zonal-mean zonal wind at 608N and 10 hPa reversed to easterly. This stratospheric dynamical activity was followed by an equatorward shift of the tropospheric jet stream and by a high pressure anomaly over the North Atlantic, which resulted in severe cold conditions in the United Kingdom and northern Europe. In most of the five models, the SSW event was predicted 10 days in advance. However, only some ensemble members in most of the models predicted weakening of westerly wind when the models were initialized 15 days in advance of the SSW. Further dynamical analysis of the SSW shows that this event was characterized by the anomalous planetary wavenumber-1 amplification followed by the anomalous wavenumber-2 amplification in the stratosphere, which resulted in a split vortex occurring between 6 and 8 January 2013. The models have some success in reproducing wavenumber-1 activity when initialized 15 days in advance, but they generally failed to produce the wavenumber-2 activity during the final days of the event. Detailed analysis shows that models have reasonably good skill in forecasting tropospheric blocking features that stimulate wavenumber-2 amplification in the troposphere, but they have limited skill in reproducing wavenumber-2 amplification in the stratosphere.
