      • First Record and Genetic Diversity of the Peking Gecko (Gekko swinhonis, Squamata: Gekkonidae) in Incheon, South Korea

        The introduction of invasive species is increasing worldwide due to the development of the trade and the pet industry. Geckos (Gekkonidae) are the representative invasive reptiles. In the Republic of Korea, two gecko species, the Schlegel's Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus) and the House gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus), have reported. In September 2021, new geckos were collected from buildings near the Incheon Port. To determine their identities, we evaluated 16 morphological parameters (7 size values and 9 scale count values) and analyzed the partial sequences of two mitochondrial DNA genes (CO1 and CytB) from 21 adult geckos. In addition, to evaluate the possibility as an invasive species, we constructed the haplotype network and Bayesian inference (BI) and Maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees, including 27 Chinese populations. Based on the values of the morphological parameters and the BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) analysis of the CO1 gene sequence (688bp), we determined the geckos as the Peking gecko (G. swinhonis), an endemic species in China. In the results of the phylogenetic trees, the geckos in the Incheon population is intermixed with those from Chinese populations. Overall, we suggest that the Peking gecko population in Incheon Port might be an invasive species recently introduced from multiple locations of China.         The RNA-binding protein repertoire of embryonic stem cells

        RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) have essential roles in RNA-mediated gene regulation, and yet annotation of RBPs is limited mainly to those with known RNA-binding domains. To systematically identify the RBPs of embryonic stem cells (ESCs), we here employ interactome capture, which combines UV cross-linking of RBP to RNA in living cells, oligo(dT) capture and MS. From mouse ESCs (mESCs), we have defined 555 proteins constituting the mESC mRNA interactome, including 283 proteins not previously annotated as RBPs. Of these, 68 new RBP candidates are highly expressed in ESCs compared to differentiated cells, implicating a role in stem-cell physiology. Two well-known E3 ubiquitin ligases, Trim25 (also called Efp) and Trim71 (also called Lin41), are validated as RBPs, revealing a potential link between RNA biology and protein-modification pathways. Our study confirms and expands the atlas of RBPs, providing a useful resource for the study of the RNA-RBP network in stem cells.

        남성경찰관들의 적대적-온정적 성차별 수준 탐색 연구

        경찰은 남성이 비율이 압도적인 조직이자, 업무의 특성상 여성에게 적합하지 않은 직업군이라는 인식 등이 작용하여 여성경찰관 증원이나 다양한 업무 배치 및 지위 향상에 대한 우려가 조직안팎에 존재한다. 이 연구는 경찰조직 내 여성경찰관이 성에 기반한 다양한 차별경험 문제를 이해하고, 더 나아가 남녀경찰관의 갈등 문제에 조직의성차별 문화가 미치는 영향을 우려하며 시도된 것이다. 특히, 남성경찰관이 지닌 성차별 수준을 적대적-온정적인양가적 차원에서 진단해보고자 하였다. 경찰이 조직차원에서 성평등을 지향하고, 다양한 정책들을 시도함에 있어서 구성원의 인식, 특히 남성경찰이 지니고 있는 성차별 수준에 대한 진단은 의미가 있다. 최근 성평등주의를 지향한 다양한 제도와 정책적인 노력, 사회적 분위기가 성차별 형태의 진화를 가져왔다. 과거 노골적ㆍ직접적으로 여성을 폄하하던 고정관념과 편견은 감소한 것처럼 보인다. 그러나 오늘날의 차별은 표면적으로는 호의적이고 온정적인 듯 하지만 실상은 여성의 역할을 제한하는 보다 은밀하고 교묘한 형태로 대체되었다. 분석 결과, 남성경찰관의 성차별은 적대적인 것보다 온정적인 것이 상대적으로 더 높았다. 경찰조직에서 여성을보살핌의 대상으로 바라보는 주관적 신념을 지닌 남성경찰관의 존재는 여성경찰을 동료가 아닌 여성으로 인식되어지는 경우가 많으며, 그 과정에서 다양한 형태의 성차별이 이루어질 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 따라서 성차별이 한개인의 인식문제에서 비롯되거나 그치는 문제가 아니라 조직 내 성차별적 통념과 비공식적인 행위규범을 강화시킬수 있음을 주지하고, 조직적 차원에서 개선방안을 모색해 보아야 할 것이다. Police are organizations with an overwhelming proportion of men. In addition, due to the specificityof the work, there are concerns inside and outside the organization about the increase in femalepolice officers or the improvement of various work arrangements and status. This study wasattempted by female police officers in the police organization understanding various genderbased discrimination experiences problems, and furthermore, concerned about the impact of theorganization’s gender discrimination culture on the conflict issue of male and female police officers. In particular, ambivalent sexism made by hostile attitudes and benevolent attitudes of male policeofficers was examined. It is meaningful to systematically pursue gender equality and to diagnose the levelof gender discrimination by members, especially male police officers, in attempting various policies. Various systems, policy efforts, and social atmosphere to pursue gender egalitarianism haverather evolved in the form of gender discrimination. It seems that the disparaging prejudice againstwomen, which was explicit and direct in the past, has decreased. In recent years, discriminationseems to be favorable and compassionate on the surface, but in reality, it has been replaced ina more secret and subtle form to limit the role of women. As a result of the analysis, gender discrimination by male police officers was relatively higherin benevolent than hostile. The existence of male police officers with subjective beliefs that viewwomen as objects of care means that female police are often perceived as women, not colleagues. It also implies the possibility of various forms of gender discrimination in the process. Therefore,it is necessary to pay attention to the fact that gender discrimination is not a matter of anindividual’s perception, but can strengthen the organization’s gender discrimination conventionalwisdom and informal code of conduct, and to seek improvement measures.

        Characterization of a Kazal-type serine protease inhibitor from black rockfish <i>Sebastes schlegelii</i> and its possible role in hepatic immune response

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Kazal-type serine protease inhibitors (KSPIs) play important roles in the regulation of endogenous proteases, cell development, blood coagulation, and immune response. In this study, we identified and characterized a KSPI homologue (<I>SsKSPI</I>) in black rockfish, <I>Sebastes schlegelii</I>. The full-length cDNA sequence of <I>SsKSPI</I> was 532 base pairs (bp), including an open reading frame (ORF) of 330 bp, which encodes a polypeptide of 110 amino acids with a signal peptide of 21 amino acids. The greatest value for identity (42.9%) and similarity (50.9%) was observed with <I>Channa striata</I> KSPI. We purified the recombinant protein of <I>SsKSPI</I> and performed protease inhibitory assays using three common serine proteases. The recombinant SsKSPI exhibited specific inhibitory activity against subtilisin A in a dose-dependent manner. Tissue distribution of <I>SsKSPI</I> mRNA has been examined amongst 10 important tissues in healthy rockfish and the liver was found to be the predominant expression organ of <I>SsKSPI.</I> The modulation of <I>SsKSPI</I> expression under immune challenges was also investigated in the liver. The <I>SsKSPI</I> mRNA expression was significantly up-regulated in response to both bacterial (<I>Streptococcus iniae</I> and lipopolysaccharide) and viral (polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid) challenges.         <P>Highly efficient exfoliation of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was successfully demonstrated by utilizing biocompatible phenoxylated dextran, a kind of polysaccharide, as a SWNT dispersion agent. Phenoxylated dextran shows greater ability in producing individual SWNTs from raw materials than any other dispersing agent, including anionic surfactants and another polysaccharide. Furthermore, with this novel polymer, SWNT bundles or impurities present in raw materials are removed under much milder processing conditions compared to those of ultra-centrifugation procedures. There exists an optimal composition of phenoxy groups (13.6 wt%) that leads to the production of high-quality SWNT suspensions, as confirmed by UV-vis-nIR absorption and nIR fluorescence spectroscopy. Furthermore, phenoxylated dextran strongly adsorbs onto SWNTs, enabling SWNT fluorescence even in solid-state films in which metallic SWNTs co-exist. By bypassing ultra-centrifugation, this low-energy dispersion scheme can potentially be scaled up to industrial production levels.</P>

        Role of concurrent chemoradiation on locally advanced unresectable adenoid cystic carcinoma

        Background/Aims: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare salivary gland tumor characterized by indolence, with a high rate of local recurrence and distant metastasis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) on locally advanced unresectable ACC. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from 10 patients with pathologically confirmed ACC of the head and neck who received CCRT with cisplatin in Seoul National University Hospital between 2013 and 2018. Results: Ten patients with unresectable disease at the time of diagnosis or with positive margins after surgical resection received CCRT with weekly cisplatin. Eight patients (80%) achieved complete remission, of which three later developed distant metastases without local relapse; one patient developed distant metastasis and local relapse. Two patient achieved partial remission without progression. Patients experienced several toxicities, including dry mouth, radiation dermatitis, nausea, and salivary gland inflammation of mostly grade 1 to 2. Only one patient showed grade 3 oral mucositis. Median relapse-free survival was 34.5 months (95% confidence interval, 22.8 months to not reached). Conclusions: CCRT with cisplatin is effective for local control of ACC with manageable toxicity and may be an effective treatment option for locally advanced unresectable ACC.

        Immediate Effect between Graston Technique and Self-Myofascial Release Technique on Calf Muscle Function and Walking of Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

        Objective: The Graston technique and self-myofascial release technique using foam roller are used to fascia release. The purposeof this study was to compare the immediate effects of the Graston technique and self-myofascial release technique using foamroller to improve calf muscle function and walking speed. Design: A cross-sectional studyMethods: Total fifty-two healthy adults participated in this study. Subjects randomly were conducted the Graston technique andself-myofascial release technique using foam roller to the right and left calf muscles for 5 minutes each. Calf muscle function was assessed by ankle dorsi flexion range of motion, and walking speed was assessed by 10m walking test on preferred walking andfast walking. Results: Both the Graston technique and self-myofascial release technique using foam roller significantly improved the ankledorsiflexion angle, viscoelastic properties of the calf muscle, and preferred walking speed (p<0.05), but there was no significantdifference in vertical jump and fast walking speed. Also, there was no significant differences between the two techniques in allvariables (p>0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that both the Graston technique and self-myofascial release technique using foam roller can affect muscle function and walking speed by relaxing the fascia of the calf muscles. Because the immediate effects are similarbetween the two interventions, the self-myofascial release technique using foam roller is recommended for economic savings.
