Application of Kinoform CGHs to an ID Tag System
Hye-Rim Kim,Ki-Mun Pak,Ki-Woo Jun,Hyun-Whan Choi,Ji-Song Lim,Yong-Hyub Won IEEE 2010 IEEE photonics journal Vol.2 No.4
<P>In this paper, we successfully apply multilevel kinoform computer-generated hologram (CGH) patterns, which are recorded on a fine texture paper by a photo printer, into the hologram identification (ID) tag system. The 11-level kinoform CGH images are generated on our tag samples by a modified simulated annealing method at a low quantization error rate of 0.4% compared with the original data and then retrieved by a commercial digital camera and reconstructed in the computer to the original data with about 4% reconstruction error rate. The low reconstruction error is accomplished by suitable pattern recognition and image processing. We also propose a kinoform reconstruction algorithm that can considerably reduce reconstruction errors occurring when the tag is damaged. It is shown that the original image of a fingerprint can be reconstructed at a low error rate of about 12%, although nearly half of the tag data are lost.</P>

Quality changes were investigated during simulated export procedure of ‘Manna’ pepper (Capsicum annuum. cv. Manna) to elucidate the effects of precooling and storage temperatures. Green peppers harvested early July were precooled to different levels and then stored at 0, 4, and 8℃ for 4 weeks under modified atmosphere (MA) packaging conditions. Weight losses inside MA packages were less than 1% during 4-week shipping simulation. Respiration rates measured after storage and during the shelf life tended to be higher in peppers stored at 0 and 4℃ than those at 8℃. Flesh firmness and texture rating on the shelf were maintained better after 3/4 precooling plus 4 and 8℃ storage. Surface color was also influenced by storage temperature, although no visible red coloration was observed even after 4-week storage plus 7 days on the shelf. Seed discoloration was severe after 0℃ storage, while moderate in peppers stored at 4 and 8℃. Appearance of the pepper after export simulation was better when fruit were precooled to 1/2 level and then stored at 4 or 8℃. Potential shipping period seemed to be shorter than 4 weeks at 4 or 8℃ when 7-day shelf life was taken into account as a prerequisite condition for the export program.

Background: Low-fluence Q-switched Nd: YAG laser proved to be reliable in the treatment of melasma The Q-switched Nd:YAG laser have long been used for facial resurfacfing and photorejuvenation. Objectives: In this study, we evaluated efficacy and safety of the dual pulse mode with half fluence, compared to conventional mode, as a novel treatment method of Q-switched Nd:YAG laser for reducing adverse events with efficacy. Methods: One asain man of Fitzpatrick skin type III, two brown guinea-pigs and cultured melan-A cell line were treated with dual pulse and conventional modes of 1064nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. And we investigated immunohistochemical, electron microscopic, biochemical studies for human and guinea pig skin, and cultured melan-A cell respectively. Results: Specimen which was irradiated by conventional mode showed significant increase of pro-inflammatory transcription factor and cytokines, compared to dual pulse mode. In guinea pig and cultured cell study, when comparing with same total energy, we could observe more prominent spongiosis and cellular level damages in case of conventional mode than dual pulse mode. Conclusion: Our study showed that dual pulse mode can be more effective or at least have similar effect for treating pigment lesion than conventional mode. Dual pulse mode could be a suitable mode to adapt the concept of ‘subcellular selective photothermolysis’ with fewer adverse events.

Background: Vulvar diseases are not rare in dermatology, however the clinical investigations of the vulvar lesions are insufficient. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiological aspects of the vulvar diseases, and to highlight the clinical features of dermatoses of the vulvar with the brief review of the common vulvar diseases. Methods: The retrospective clinical study was performed by reviewing charts, pathologic slide, and clinical photographs of 37 patients who had received skin biopsy for vulvar lesions at Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital between February 2009 and September 2013. Results: The mean age was 47.3 years. The most frequent vulvar diseases were epidermal cyst, lichen sclerosus, lichen simplex chronicus, herpes simplex infection and condyloma accuminatum in the decreasing order of frequency. Except for the 11 asymptomatic patients, the rest of the patients complained of various symptoms such as a pain, prickling sensation, tenderness and pruritus. Of the 37 cases, 14 had patches or plaques, 11 had papules or nodules, 6 had erosions or ulcers and 6 had vulvar mass. Conclusion: We retrospectively studied 37 cases of vulvar diseases. The results of this study are similar to previousreports on the clinical features of vulvar diseases. This study suggests that various conditions can affect the vulvar. Further investigation with a larger group of patients is necessary to better understand the epidemiology of vulvar diseases.
Lichen striatus following Blaschko lines

Lichen striatus is an uncommon self-limiting dermatosis that occurs mostly in children and rarely in adults. It presents as linear, erythematous, lichenoid papules distributed along Blaschko lines usually on the extremities and rarely on the trunk and face. It is important to distinguish lichen striatus from many conditions following Blaschko lines, particularly the adult “blaschkitis” initially described as a distinct entity from lichen striatus. Blaschkitis is more common in adults, consists of papules and vesicles in multiple lines usually on the trunk, is more recurrent, and histologically shows a spongiotic rather than a lichenoid pattern. However, it is still not clear whether lichen striatus and blaschkitis are two distinct diseases or variations of the same entity. A 45-year-old male presented with pruritic, linear, brownish papules on the back for 1 month. The lesions showed the pattern of a v on the spine, suggesting the distribution along Blaschko lines. Histopathological findings showed minimal spongiosis and lichenoid lymphohistiocytic infiltrates in the upper dermis and around the sweat ducts in the deep dermis. After 6 months, the lesions improved with topical steroid preparations although pigmentation persisted. The clinical features and histologic findings suggested the diagnosis of lichen striatus. Herein, we report a case of lichen striatus distributed along Blaschko lines on a trunk in an adult patient.

Background/Aims: Limited information is available regard-ing patient survival after sorafenib discontinuation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus, we developed and validated a novel survival prediction model. Methods: Clinical data from 409 patients with HCC who stopped tak-ing sorafenib between September 2008 and February 2015 were reviewed. Results: In the training cohort, four factors were independent negative predictors of survival (p< 0.05). Based on the β regression coefficient of each factor, we established the NEXT score (Survival after Stopping Nexavar Treatment), allocating 1 point each for an Eastern Coopera-tive Oncology Group score ≥2, Child-Pugh class B or C, serum sodium ≤135 mEq/L, and α-fetoprotein >400 ng/mL. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values to predict 1-, 3-, and 6-month survival rates were 0.805, 0.809, and 0.774, respectively, in the training cohort and 0.783, 0.728, and 0.673, respectively, in the validation cohort (n=137). When the training and validation cohorts were stratified into three risk groups (NEXT score 0 [low-risk] vs 1 to 2 [intermediate-risk] vs 3 to 4 [high-risk]), survival differed significantly between the groups (p<0.05, log-rank test). Conclusions: In patients with HCC, survival after stopping sorafenib is poor. However, risk estimates based on a new “NEXT score” may help predict survival and prognosis even in patients who discontinue sorafenib treatment. (Gut Liver 2017;11:693-701)
