        Objective : Our purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the transcatheter arterial embolization for the management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Materials and Methods : 14 patients with massive or recurrent uterine bleeding underwent percutaneous transcatheter arterial embolization between February 2003 and September 2004. We reviewed 14 cases of uterine artery or internal iliac artery embolization using gelfoam or PVA particles. Results : Good management of uterine bleeding was achieved in 13 of 14(93%) cases. The cause of abnormal uterine bleeding was myoma(5 case), post D & E bleeding(3), acquired vascular malformation(3), pseudoaneurysm(1), adenomyosis(1), and endometrial hyperplasia(1). Conclusion : Transcatheter artery embolization is an effective and life-saving procedure in massive or recurrent uterine bleeding. Early diagnosis and prompt transcatheter arterial embolization is a useful mangement of uterine bleeding.

        Enhanced Expression of TREK-1 Is Related with Chronic Constriction Injury of Neuropathic Pain Mouse Model in Dorsal Root Ganglion

        Neuropathic pain is a complex state showing increased pain response with dysfunctional inhibitory neurotransmission. The TREK family, one of the two pore domain K+ (K2P) channel subgroups were focused among various mechanisms of neuropathic pain. These channels influence neuronal excitability and are thought to be related in mechano/thermosensation. However, only a little is known about the expression and role of TREK-1 and TREK-2, in neuropathic pain. It is performed to know whether TREK-1 and/ or 2 are positively related in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of a mouse neuropathic pain model, the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model. Following this purpose, Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot analyses were performed using mouse DRG of CCI model and compared to the sham surgery group. Immunofluorescence staining of isolectin-B4 (IB4) and TREK were performed. Electrophysiological recordings of single channel currents were analyzed to obtain the information about the channel. Interactions with known TREK activators were tested to confirm the expression. While both TREK-1 and TREK-2 mRNA were significantly overexpressed in DRG of CCI mice, only TREK-1 showed significant increase (~9 fold) in western blot analysis. The TREK-1-like channel recorded in DRG neurons of the CCI mouse showed similar current-voltage relationship and conductance to TREK-1. It was easily activated by low pH solution (pH 6.3), negative pressure, and riluzole. Immunofluorescence images showed the expression of TREK-1 was stronger compared to TREK-2 on IB4 positive neurons.

        Nephrocalcinosis is described as the deposition of calcium crystals in the renal parenchyma that result from prolonged states of hypercalcemia. Recently recognized is the deposition of calcium phosphate in the renal tubular injury by using sodium phosphate cathartics commonly used for the colonic cleansing. This phenomenon was termed phosphate nephropathy. Acute renal failure secondary to phosphate nephropathy has been increasingly recognized as a complication after the administration of sodium phosphate solution for colonoscopy. We report a case of acute phosphate nephropathy following oral sodium phosphate solution to cleanse the bowel for colonoscopy. A renal biopsy showed diffuse tubular calcium deposition.

      • Synthesis and anti-inflammatory evaluation of <i>N</i>-sulfonyl anthranilic acids via Ir(III)-catalyzed C–H amidation of benzoic acids

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The iridium(III)-catalyzed <I>ortho</I>-C–H amidation of benzoic acids with sulfonyl azides is described. These transformations allow the facile generation of <I>N</I>-sulfonyl anthranilic acids, which are known as crucial scaffolds found in biologically active molecules. In addition, all synthetic products were evaluated for in vitro anti-inflammatory activity against interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. Notably, compounds <B>4c</B> and <B>4d</B>, generated from <I>p</I>-OMe- and <I>p</I>-Br-sulfonyl azides, were found to display potent anti-inflammatory property stronger than that of well-known NSAIDs ibuprofen.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The iridium(III)-catalyzed <I>ortho</I>-C–H amidation of benzoic acids is described. </LI> <LI> Anti-inflammatory activity of synthetic anthranilic acids is evaluated. </LI> <LI> Some synthetic products display anti-inflammatory effect competitive with ibuprofen. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>The iridium(III)-catalyzed <I>ortho</I>-C–H amidation of benzoic acids with sulfonyl azides is described.         ON IDEMPOTENTS IN RELATION WITH REGULARITY

        We make a study of two generalizations of regular rings, concentrating our attention on the structure of idempotents. A ring R is said to be right attaching-idempotent if for $a{\in}R$ there exists $0{\neq}b{\in}R$ such that ab is an idempotent. Next R is said to be generalized regular if for $0{\neq}a{\in}R$ there exist nonzero $b{\in}R$ such that ab is a nonzero idempotent. It is first checked that generalized regular is left-right symmetric but right attaching-idempotent is not. The generalized regularity is shown to be a Morita invariant property. More structural properties of these two concepts are also investigated.

      • Phase transition behavior and mechanical properties of (1-<i>x</i>)(Bi<sub>1/2</sub>Na<sub>1/2</sub>)TiO<sub>3</sub>-<i>x</i>SrTiO<sub>3</sub> lead-free piezoelectric ceramics

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Lead-free (1-<I>x</I>)(Bi<SUB>1/2</SUB>Na<SUB>1/2</SUB>)TiO<SUB>3</SUB>–<I>x</I>SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> (BNST, 0≤ <I>x</I> ≤0.25) ceramics were prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction. The effect of increasing the concentration of SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> (ST) on the phase transition behavior was investigated using x-ray diffraction patterns, field-induced polarization, and strain curves. As the ST concentrations increased, a ferroelectric to ergodic relaxor phase transition occurred. At <I>x</I> =0.25, the highest strain was observed despite the piezoelectric charge constant being the lowest, and the ferroelectric and ergodic relaxor phases seemed to coexist. In order to investigate the mechanical properties of BNST ceramics, the resonance and antiresonance frequencies of various vibration modes were obtained, and the various tensors of elastic compliances were subsequently calculated. Because the resonance and antiresonance frequencies of the ergodic relaxor piezoceramics cannot be easily identified due to the absence of a remanent polarization and strain after the removal of the electric field, some tensors of elastic compliance of BNST with <I>x</I> =0.25 were obtained by extrapolation of the compliance variation as a function of ST concentrations.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A ferroelectric to ergodic relaxor phase transition occurred with increasing ST concentration of the BNST ceramics. </LI> <LI> The BNST with 25mol% ST showed the highest strain due to the electric-field-induced phase transition from ergodic relaxor to ferroelectric phase. </LI> <LI> The elastic compliance values of the BNST ceramics gradually decreased with increasing ST concentration. </LI> <LI> All tensors of elastic compliance values of BNST ceramics are almost half of those of commercial PZT–based ceramics. </LI> </UL> </P>

        농약이 담수토양(湛水土壤)중 미생물상 변화에 끼치는 영향

        農藥이 土壤 微生物의 相變化에 끼치는 影響을 究明하기 위하여 湛水土壤 狀態下 水稻를 移秧한 區와 移秧하지 않은 區에 殺蟲劑인 carbofuran, 除草劑 pyrazolate 및 pyrazolate+pretilachlor 合劑를 處理한 後 pH 變化와 總細菌, 그람 陰性菌, 絲狀菌등의 數를 경시적으로 調査分析한 結果는 다음과 같다. 1. pH 變化는 水稻栽培 藥劑 處理後 時日이 經過함에 따라 若干 낮아지다 6週째에는 다시 上昇하였고, 水稻를 栽培한지 않은 境遇 藥劑處理後의 pH는 거의 變化가 없었다. 2. 供試藥劑 모두 水稻栽培 有無에 關係없이 藥劑處理 後의 總細菌數는 對照區에 비하여 적었고 處理藥量이 增加함에 따라 減少되었으나 時日이 經過함에 따라 增加되었다. 3. 農藥處理後 6週째까지 그람 陰性菌의 數는 對照區보다 적었고 時日이 經過함에 따라 carbofuran處理區의 그람 陰性菌의 數는 減少되었으나 pyrazolate 및 合劑處理의 그람 陰性菌 數는 增加되는 傾向이었다. 4. 藥劑處理區의 嫌氣性 細菌의 數도 對照區보다도 적었으나 時日이 經過하면서 增加되었다. 5. 絲狀菌의 數는 carbofuran 處理의 境遇 對照區와 비슷하였으나 pyrazolate와 그 合劑處理區의 境遇는 處理濃度가 增加하면서 4-5週째 까지는 더욱 減少되다가 6週째 까지는 더욱 減少되다가 6週째에는 增加한는 傾向이었다. This study was conducted to estimate influences of pesticides such as carbofuran[2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethylbenzofuran-7-yl methyl carbamate] as an insecticide, and pyrazolate [4-(2,4-dichlorobenzolyl)-1,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolyl-1,3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolyl-p-toluensulfonate], pyrazolate+pretilachlor [2-chlor-2,6-diethyl-N-(n-propoxyethyl) acetanilied] as herbicides on change in numbers of soil microorganisms and pH in planted and unplanted flooded rice paddy soils. The results of weekly investigated change of pH and populations of total bacteria, gram negative bacteria, anaerobic bacteria and fungi after treatments of pesticides were as follows : The change of pH in rice-planted soil gradually decreased in a matter of weeks after treatment with pesticide and the pH increased again from the sixth week, but no change of pH could be observed in nonplanted soil. The total numer of bacteria in the treated plots were slightly less than in the control plot, and the numbers decreased with increasing application rates of pesticides. But the microbial population increased in a matter of days after treatment with pesticide. Number of the gram negative bacteria until the sixth week after treatment of pesticide were fewer than control. The number in the carbofuran-treated plot decreased after a weeks after treatment, but numbers in plots treated with pyrazolate and pyrazolate+pretilachlor increased. The number of anaerobic bacteria in the treated plots were few by comparison with the untreated control, but the number increased after a weeks after treatment with pesticides. The populations of fungi in the carbofuran-treated plot were similar by comparison with the untreated control. The populations in the plots treated with pyrazolate and pyrazolate+pretilachlor decreased in 4 to 5 weeks with increase of application rate, but afterwards increased.

      • Quantification of Antioxidant Phenolic Compounds in a New Chrysanthemum Cultivar by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detection and Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry

        <P>The flowers of<I> Chrysanthemum morifolium</I> Ramat. have been used as an herbal tea and in traditional medicine, and the plant has been developed to produce horticultural cultivars of various colors and shapes. In this study, a new chrysanthemum cultivar with dark purple petals (<I>C. morifolium</I> cv. ARTI-Dark Chocolate; ADC) was developed by radiation-induced mutation breeding of its original cultivar with purple striped white petals (<I>C. morifolium</I> cv. Noble Wine, NW). The phenolic profile and antioxidant property of ADC were investigated and compared with NW and the commercially available medicinal herb,<I> C. morifolium</I> with yellow petals (CM), in order to find a scientific support to produce a new source of natural antioxidant. Flavonoid and phenolic acid profiles of the ethanol extracts of the three flowers were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESIMS), while antioxidant properties were evaluated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging assay. Among the tested flowers, ADC possessed the strongest antioxidant capacity and the highest phenolic contents. Flavonoids (acacetin, apigenin, luteolin, acacetin-7-<I>O</I>-<I>β</I>-glucoside, apigenin-7-<I>O</I>-<I>β</I>-glucoside, luteolin-7-<I>O</I>-<I>β</I>-glucoside, and linarin) and phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid and mixture of 1,4-, 1,5-, and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acids) were identified and quantified.</P>
