      • Females and Barriers to Work-Family Balance: A Case Study of Casino Dealers

        ( Grace,Suk Ha Chan ),( Perry,Yun Kit Ip ),( Fei Fei Lin ),( Xi Chen ) 한국문화관광학회 2018 문화관광연구 Vol.20 No.1

A positive work-family balance (WFB) can enhance service quality and facilitate job satisfaction among staff members, thereby reducing absenteeism and turnover rate. Female participation in hospitality is one of the significant changes in the last century. Significant progress has been achieved by women with their increase movements in their occupations. The proportion of female dealers in Macau has increased. If females spend additional time in their job, they will often spend less time for their family and social life. This condition is often considered ‘win-lose’ outcomes and hardly achieves WFB. This study investigates the features of quality WFB of female dealers in a casino hotel in Macau. Long work hours, shift duties, demanding customers and a stressful environment are taken-for-granted in the casino business and could lead to an unbalanced WFB. This qualitative study involves face-to-face interviews with 25 casino hotel female dealers from five major large casino hotels in Macau. Content analysis is used to elaborate the female employees’ perception of WFB and identify the challenges and barriers in achieving WFB. Findings show that human resources should provide additional support to eliminate the concern of females in balancing their family and job security. Recommendations will be formulated in the study.

Oral Loading of Phenobarbital to Achieve Therapeutic Effects in Pediatric Patients with Acute Repetitive Seizures

        Jemima Grace D. Fronda(Jemima Grace D. Fronda ),Mel Michel G. Villaluz(Mel Michel G. Villaluz ),Cristina M. Cruz-Urbi(Cristina M. Cruz-Urbi ) 대한소아신경학회 2022 대한소아신경학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: Intravenous phenobarbital has not been available at our institution since 2019. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral phenobarbital loading at a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg to achieve therapeutic serum levels and clinical seizure control in pediatric patients with acute repetitive seizures. Methods: This is a retrospective single-center review of the medical records of pediatric patients admitted for acute repetitive seizures (from January 2019 to June 2022) at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center who were given an oral phenobarbital loading dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg with serum level measurements taken within 48 hours after oral loading. Results: Eleven patients were given a single oral phenobarbital loading dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg, while 14 were given two doses of 10 mg/kg 12 hours apart. All 25 patients achieved therapeutic serum levels within 48 hours post-loading. Higher serum levels were seen at 48 hours (median, 19.8 μg/mL at 24 hours vs. 24.4 μg/mL at 48 hours). This difference was statistically significant at 5% (P=0.023), and the majority achieved adequate seizure control without requiring additional anti-seizure medications (76%). Transient drowsiness was the most commonly documented adverse effect. Conclusion: Oral loading of phenobarbital at a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg given as a single dose or in two divided doses is an effective and safe alternative to achieve therapeutic serum levels and adequate clinical seizure control at 24 hours post-loading. This may be a promising and useful intervention at centers without available intravenous phenobarbital.

Toward a Ditransitive Prototype:The Gradience of English Ditransitives

        Grace Ge-Soon Moon 한국영어학학회 2014 영어학연구 Vol.20 No.3

Moon, Grace Ge-Soon. 2014. Toward a Ditransitive Prototype: The Gradienceof English Ditransitives. English Language and Linguistics 20.3, 115-134. Ditransitive constructions in English display a wide variation in acceptability judgments. Thepresent paper attempts to account for this variation within the framework of prototype theory. Specifically, it proposes a ditransitive prototype based on both the semantic features identified in previous research as relevant to prototypicaltransitivity and the properties that characterize the canonical ditransitive verb give.Arguing that the acceptability of ditransitive constructions is a reflex of theirpoximity to the proposed ditransitive prototype, the paper demonstrates that the"ditransitivity" of a given clause is determined by an interplay between the objectiveproperties of the clause itself and the speaker's subjective construal of the event described in the clause.

      • From Arithmetic to Algebra: Sequences and Patterns as a Means of Introducing Variables in Seventh Grade Mathematics

( Diana Grace Aniban ),( Melissa Ruth Castro ),( Von Christopher Chua ),( Aileen Custodio ),( Kristine Joy De Castro ),( Mary Grace Escueta ),( Jellen Garcia ),( Still John Reyes ),( Ericka Santiago ) 한국수학교육학회 2014 뉴스레터 Vol.30 No.5

Guided with the principles of Lesson Study and Productive Pedagogies as applied to microteaching, this paper discusses the results and conclusions of a series of activities done by some graduate students of De La Salle University, Philippines in an attempt to test the applicability of the lesson ¬Sequence and Patterns - to introduce variables to seventh graders. The post-lesson discussion and a posteriori analysis proved the lesson to be a practical means to address the issue as it was able to put forward discourses and elaborations on possible students`` understanding of variables generated through attempts to describe patterns occurring in sequences presented.

      • Urban and Peri-urban agriculture: A way of Improving Livelihoods and Sustainable development in Tanzania

Grace Kabate 서울행정학회 2013 서울행정학회 학술대회 발표논문집 Vol.2013 No.10

The concept of Urban and Peri Urban Agriculture (UPA) has become a fashionable issue, gaining popularity especially in developing economies because of its importance in urban livelihood and it has been discovered to be a viable poverty intervention strategy for the urban poor. This study collected evidences and data from various sources to document the contribution of Urban and Peri Urban (UPA) Agriculture in sustainable livelihoods. The study document the current practices, Policies, challenges and Opportunities as well as environmental impacts associated with urban farming in Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is by far the most important urban centre in Tanzania. With rapid urban growth in the last two decades, this city now accounts for about 35% of the total urban population of Tanzania. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in sub-Saharan Africa, with increasing rural-urban migration. City and municipal authorities face sighificant challenges with respect to providing new or even maintain existing infrastructure and services (Pan-African START Secretariat, 2011). The presence and potentials of Urban Agriculture and Peri Urban Agriculture in Tanzania is not in doubt. Evidence from various studies done in Dar es Salaam verified the fact that UPA is thriving and sustaining a large population of unemployed and employed people in Dar es Salaam and it is same for other cities in Tanzania. However, policy makers and government have deliberately neglected this veritable sector and has failed to acknowledge it and channel attention to it. The policy suggestion is to act immediately by integrating UA into the city system in a more viable and sustainable way.

      • Understanding the North Korean Human Rights Act of 2004

Grace M. Kang 통일연구원 2004 International journal of korean unification studie Vol.13 No.2

The North Korean Human Rights Act of 2004 introduces new considerations on how the United States should address the problems posed by North Korea. The Act calls for human rights to be a key element in negotiations on the current nuclear weapons crisis. It links non-humanitarian aid to substantial improvements in human rights. It calls for a Special Envoy on Human Rights in North Korea to coordinate and promote human rights efforts. The Act also authorizes $24,000,000 per year for the next four years to achieve its goals, which are to promote human rights in North Korea, promote a more durable humanitarian solution for North Korean refugees, increase monitoring and access to humanitarian assistance inside North Korea, promote information into and out of North Korea, and promote progress towards peaceful reunification under a democratic system of government. The Act emphasizes monitoring of humanitarian assistance inside North Korea to minimize the possibility that it could be diverted to political or military use. It also calls for pressuring China and the UNHCR to more vigorously protect North Korean refugees and recognizes the importance of nongovernmental organizations, UN bodies, and states in addressing the human rights issue. In addition, the Act contemplates a visionary, multilateral solution modeled after the Helsinki process that may allow for a fundamentally improved security situation in northeast Asia. Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis in the Sub-Sahara African Countries

        ( Grace Ofori-abebrese ),( Robert Becker Pickson ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2018 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.33 No.3

The validity of the Ricardian equivalence proposition remains disputed in spite of the numerous empirical studies. This study utilized panel ARDL estimation approach to investigate the evidence of Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis in five Sub-Sahara African countries, namely Botswana, Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, and Kenya over the period of 1981~2014. The results show that GDP per capita and interest rate have significant positive impacts on private consumption, whereas government debt, government spending, and government interest payment on the outstanding debt have negative impacts on private consumption. From the perspective of this study, the Ricardian equivalence hypothesis, which states that private consumption remains unchanged regardless of government’s spending, does not hold in Sub-Sahara African countries.
