Background/Aims: The optimal systolic blood pressure (SBP) goal for elderly patients with hypertension, especially to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and improve outcome, is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the beneficial effects of intensive treatment for hypertension on the incidence of CVD in elderly Korean patients. Methods: The HOW to Optimize eLDerly systolic Blood Pressure (HOWOLD-BP) trial is a multicenter, parallel-design, open-label, randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate whether intensive treatment (SBP ≤ 130 mmHg) will provide more benefits in lowering the incidence and mortality associated with CVD than standard treatment (SBP ≤ 140 mmHg) in elderly patients with hypertension aged ≥ 65 years. For this study, eleven university hospitals in Korea will enroll approximately 3,176 elderly patients with hypertension between 2019 and 2022. Patients will be requested to visit the clinic every 4 months for the first year and every 6 months thereafter for 36 months. Parameters, including clinic and home blood pressure, anthropometric and laboratory findings, and frailty assessments, will be collected according to the standardized protocol. The primary outcome is a composite of CVD (acute coronary syndrome, stroke, and heart failure) incidence and cardiovascular deaths. Results: As of December 2021, 1,655 participants had been enrolled in the study, including 831 patients in the standard group and 824 patients in the intensive group. Conclusions: The HOWOLD-BP trial is the first study performed in Korea to evaluate the beneficial effects of intensive blood pressure treatment on CVD in elderly patients with hypertension. The results of this study will help clarify the appropriate target SBP for this population.

<P>A novel application of quantum‐dot QD sensitized TiO2 nanotubes for artificial photosynthesis is presented by Chan Beum Park and co‐workers on p. 1883. The system is conceptually very close to natural photosynthesis; photo‐excited electrons are rapidly injected to nearby reaction centers upon light irradiation and generate reducing power, driving redox reactions for synthesis of organic compounds. This study demonstrates that more efficient artificial photosynthetic systems can be developed through rational design and engineering of photosystems. </P>

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia refers to a group of autosomal recessive disorders that is defective in the synthesis of cortisol. The enzymes most often affected are 21-hydroxylase and 11 - hydroxylase. The low levels of cortisol stimulate the pituitary gland to release ACTH. Chronic elevation of the ACTH level causes bilateral adrenal hyperplasia and a secondary increase in androgen formation. We examined a 19 year-old woman presented with clitoral hypertrophy and vaginal spotting. The subjects basal level of serum cortisol was low, but the serum levels of ACTH, 17a-hydroxyprogesterone, deoxy-corticosterone were elevated. The urinary excretions of 17-ketosteroids and 17-hydroxycorticosteroids were also increased. The karyotyping study and transrectal ultrasonography showed normal findings. The patient underwent clitoris reduction surgery and received hydrocortisone. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of 11 -hydroxylase deficiency in Korea (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 19:58∼63, 2004).

<P>This study presents a miniature haptic actuator (10mm (L)x10mm (W)x6.5mm (H)) based on magnetorheological fluids, which is designed to provide realistic touch sensations to users. Its primary goals are to evaluate mechanical or actuation performances of the prototype magnetorheological actuator and to assess its effectiveness in conveying haptic sensations to users by conducting the psychophysical experiments. The mechanical performance study evaluated the prototype's output forces from haptic perspectives using a dynamic test frame. The psychophysical experiments studied human subjects' perceptions on haptic sensations produced by the prototype. The mechanical test results show that the magnetorheological actuator is capable of generating a wide range of frequency-dependent output forces (from 1.5N to nearly 9N). The psychophysical experiments show that the actuator offers various kinesthetic and vibrotactile sensations to human operators. Overall, the results suggest a feasibility of using the magnetorheological haptic actuator in real-world applications, such as a haptic keypad and functional buttons in small consumer electronics and hand-held devices.</P>
Nondestructive Internal Defects Evaluation for Pear Using NIR/VIS Transmittance Spectroscopy
Ryu, Dong Soo,Noh, Sang Ha,Hwang, Heon 한국농업기계학회 2003 Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Vol.4 No.1
Internal defects such as browning of the flesh and blackening and rot of the ovary of pear can be easily developed because of the inadequate environmental conditions during the storage and distribution of fruit. The quality assurance system for the agricultural product is to be settled in Korea. All defected agricultural products should be excluded prior to the distribution to enhance the commercial values. However, early stage on-line defect detection of agricultural product is very difficult and even more difficult in a case of the internal defects. The goal of this research is to develop a system that can detect and classify internal defects of agricultural produce on-line using VIS/NIR transmittance spectroscopy. And Shingo pear, which is one of the famous species of Korean pear, was used for the experiment. Soft independence modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) algorithm was employed to analyze the transmittance spectroscopic data qualitatively. On-line classification system was constructed and classification model was developed and validated. As a result, the correct classification rate (CCR) using the developed classification model was 96.1%.

Impact of a Heavy-Duty Gas Turbine Operating Under Temperature Control on System Stability
Kim, Dong-Joon,Moon, Young-Hwan,Choi, Bum-Sun,Ryu, Heon-Su,Nam, Hae-Kon IEEE 2018 IEEE transactions on power systems Vol.33 No.4
<P>Frequency drops and the high ambient temperature cause a decrease in airflow and an increase in the exhaust gas temperature of a gas turbine (GT). These two conditions significantly reduce the maximum continuous power output of GTs. Correct modeling of these conditions under heavily loaded conditions, such as in hot summer, is very important. Otherwise, the simulated maximum output of GT may be significantly higher than the real one and estimation of frequency responsive reserve and spinning reserve may be gravely erroneous. This paper describes the modeling and simulation of a heavy-duty GT operating under temperature control to study its impact on power system stability. For the practical simulation, a simple logic was added to the temperature reference parameter to represent the GT under the temperature control mode under steady-state conditions in the popular Rowen GT model, and the bumpless tracking logic was considered in the proportional-integral temperature controller. For three widely used GT models, GAST, GAST2A, and GGOV1, the effect of the temperature control loop on the transient stability is reviewed in a simple manner by applying the three-phase fault. Finally, the impact of GT under temperature control operation on frequency stability was analyzed using the proposed GT model with the determined model parameters of a practical GT system with 341 MVA during frequency drop against a six-machine, 23-bus system.</P>
