The proposed study aims to numerically investigate the performance of hydrofoils in the context of amphibious aircraft application. In particular, we also study the effectiveness of a slotted hydrofoil in minimizing the cavitation phenomenon, to improve the overall water take-off performance of an amphibious aircraft. We use the ICON A5 as a base model for this study. First, we propose an approach to estimate the required hydrofoil surface area and to select the most suitable airfoil shape that can minimize cavitation, thus improving the hydrodynamic efficiency. Once the hydrofoil is selected, we perform 2D numerical studies of the hydrodynamic and cavitating characteristics of a non-slotted hydrofoil on ANSYS Fluent. In this work, we also propose to use a slotted hydrofoil to be a passive method to control the cavitation performance through the boundary layer control. Numerical results of several slotted configurations demonstrate notable improvement on the cavitation performance. We then perform a multiobjective optimization with a response surface model to simultaneously minimize the cavitation and maximize the hydrodynamic efficiency of the hydrofoil. The optimization takes the slot geometry, including the slot angle and lengths, as the design variables. In addition, a global sensitivity study has been carried and it shows that the slot widths are the more dominant factors.
The Use of Ontology in Knowledge Intensive Tasks: Ontology Driven Retrieval of Use Ca
Kim, Jongwoo,Conesa, Jordi,Ramesh, Balasubramaniam The Korea Society of Management Information System 2015 Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems Vol.25 No.1
Use cases are commonly used to represent customer requirements during systems development. In a large software development environment, finding relevant use cases from a library of past or related projects is a complex, error-prone and expensive task. This study proposes an ontological methodology to support use case retrieval in an interactive manner. The architecture of a prototype system that implements this methodology is presented. To evaluate whether the proposed approach can provide satisfactory results to users, this study develops a research model and hypotheses based on interaction theory. These hypotheses are empirically tested using a laboratory experiment which controls information filtering and perceived interaction. Our study suggests that a system which interacts with a user intelligently reduces cognitive load and increases self-efficacy and satisfaction.
Chinese Exports and Non-Tariff Measures: Testing for Heterogeneous Effects at the Product Level
Jacopo Timini,Marina Conesa 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 2019 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.34 No.1
With international trade tariffs at historically low levels today, non-tariff measures (NTMs) play an important—and growing—role in global trade policy. Concerns about shifts in global trade policy agendas are on the rise. In this paper, we rely on a gravity model and focus on Chinese exports with two aims: the first is to test for heterogeneous effects of technical NTMs versus non-technical NTMs; the second is to verify whether the NTM’s effect is influenced by the type of good (final good vs. intermediate or capital good). We find that: 1) technical NTMs tend to have positive effects on trade flows, potentially driven by improvements in consumers’ confidence and by the technical capacities of Chinese exporters and 2) non-technical NTMs are particularly stringent for final goods, possibly due to political economy reasons or substitution effects.
Pre-reservation of Resources and Controlled Loops for Contention Resolution in OBS Networks
Jaume Comellas,Josep Conesa,Salvatore Spadaro,Gabriel Junyent 한국전자통신연구원 2007 ETRI Journal Vol.29 No.5
A new scheme to alleviate contention in optical burst switching networks is proposed. It consists of preventively reserving resources in a node, to be used if resources are busy on the next hop node. The burst is sent back to the preceding node and then resent forward. Simulations are carried out to assess the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Its performance is compared with that of contention resolution based on deflection routing.

Background: To analyze the outcomes and therapeutic management of affected pregnancies with autoimmune congenital heart block (aCHB). Methods: Retrospective multicenter study in Internal Medicine Departments; inclusion criteria consisted of: aCHB of any type (I, II or III), fetal EFE and/or cardiomyopathy, cardiac block diagnosed in utero or in the first postpartum month, and mothers carrying anti-Ro52, Ro60 and/or La autoantibodies. Results: A total of 25 pregnancies with aCHB were retrospectively analyzed in 21 anti-Ro/La+ mothers. The mean maternal age at the time of pregnancy with aCHB was 33,25 years. Only 2 mothers received treatment prior to the first affected pregnancy (hydroxychloroquine and hydroxychloroquine+prednisone). Cardiac block consisted of type I (n=1), type II (n=6) and type III (n=18). At diagnosis of aCHB, 15/22 women were treated with dexamethasone (one of them, along with IVIG) and 2/22 with ritodrine. Preventive treatment with IVIG was administered in 2 pregnancies in which a recurrence was observed. Pregnancy was interrupted in 7/25 pregnancies at a mean week of 23.43 (18.2-37), while 18/25 of pregnancies gave a live birth baby with a mean age of 35.71 weeks of birth (30-40). 11 babies required pacemaker implantation, 9 immediately after birth and 2 in the neonatal period (1 at 5 years of age and another at 12). Of the 15 pregnancies with aCHB treated with dexamethasone, 12 achieved pregnancy to term (1 type II disappeared, with no changes in the remaining cases) and there were 3 fetal deaths despite treatment. Of the 7 pregnancies not treated with dexamethasone, 3 babies were born alive (no reversal of the blockade) and there were 4 fetal deaths. Conclusions: aCHB is a serious problem with a fetal mortality of 28% and a high requirement for neonatal pacemaker placement (61%).
