Analysis of thermally induced vibration of cable-beam structures

Cable-beam structures characterized by variable stiffness nonlinearities are widely found in various structural engineering applications, for example in space deployable structures. Space deployablestructures in orbit experience both high temperature caused by sun’s radiation and low temperature by Earth’s umbral shadow. The space temperature difference is above 300K at the moment of exiting or entering Earth’s umbral shadow, which results in structural thermally induced vibration. To understand the thermally induced oscillations, the analytical expression of Boley parameter of cable-beam structures is firstly deduced. Then, the thermally induced vibration of cable-beam structures is analyzed using finite element method to verify the effectiveness of Boley parameter. Finally, by analyzing the obtained numerical results and the corresponding Boley parameters, it can be concluded that the derived expression of Boley parameter is valid to evaluate the occurrence conditions of thermally induced vibration of cable-beam structures and the key parameters influencing structural thermal flutter are the cable stiffness and thickness of beams.
Study on the Health-related Quality of Life in Patients after Surgery for Malignant Bone Tumors

Aim: We conducted a study in China to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients treated on for malignant bone tumors after surgery, and investigate the possible determinants. Methods: The subjects were 120 patients surgically treated by amputation and limb-salvage for bone tumors during the period of June 2008 to June 2010. The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) was employed to measure the HRQoL of all the patients before and after surgery. Results: With regard to the results of the general quality of life tool (SF-36), we observed a significant improvement of all the indexes of HRQoL after 6 months (p<0.05). PF, RP and BP scores showed significant increase between surgery after 6 and 12 months (p<0.05). The means of the HRQoL of bone tumor patients in our study were still much lower than those of general population in every domain, even 12 months after surgery. Logistic regression showed that female patients were found to have lower scores in physical component summary (PCS) than males (OR=0.64, 95% CI=0.35-0.89). Patients older than 15 years had lower scores in mental component summary (MCS) (OR=0.60, 95% CI=0.32-0.86). Ablative surgery was related to both lower MCS and PCS scores (For MCS, OR=0.54, 95% CI=0.31-0.83; for PCS, OR=0.43, 95% CI=0.25-0.73). Conclusion: Our study showed the treatment for bone tumor could greatly alter the HRQoL of patients. Age, sex and type of surgery were associated with physical or mental HRQoL after surgery.

Purpose: Studies have shown that diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for cardiovasculardisease, including atrial fibrillation (AF); however, the clinical characteristicsand prognostic impact of DM in patients with nonvalvular AF have not been well understood in China. Materials and Methods: Included were 1644 consecutive patients with nonvalvular AF. Endpoints included all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, stroke, major bleeding, and combined endpoint events (CEE) during a 1-year follow-up. Results: The prevalence of DM was 16.8% in nonvalvular AF patients. Compared with non-diabetic AF patients, diabetic AF patientswere older and tended to coexist with other cardiovascular diseases. Most patients with DM (93.5%) were eligible for anticoagulation, as determined by CHADS2 scores. However, only 11.2% of patients received anticoagulation. Duringa 1-year follow-up, the all-cause mortality and CEE rate in the DM group were significantly higher than those of the non-DM group, while the incidence of stroke was comparable. After multivariate adjustments, DM was still an independent risk factor for 1-year all-cause mortality [hazard ratio (HR)=1.558; 95% confidence interval(CI) 1.126‒2.156; p=0.007], cardiovascular mortality (HR=1.615; 95% CI 1.052‒2.479; p=0.028), and CEE (HR=1.523; 95% CI 1.098‒2.112; p=0.012), yet not for stroke (HR=1.119; 95% CI 0.724‒1.728; p=0.614). Conclusion: DM is a common morbidity coexisting with nonvalvular AF and is associated with an increasedrisk of 1-year all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and CEE. However, no increased risk of stroke was found during a 1-year follow-up in patientswith AF and DM.

Due to the lack of ecological concept, the ecological level of Chinese tax system is relatively limited. Therefore, with regard to the severe problems of economy, society and environment, China should optimize taxes towards ecologicalization, introduce an independent environment tax and make tax system more ecological gradually under the principle named revenue neutral

Lipid rafts are related to cell surface receptor function. Integrin is a major surface receptor protein in cell adhesion and migration on the extracellular matrix (ECM). Here, we showed that lipid rafts played a critical role in human melanoma A375 cell spreading and migration on fibronectin; an important component of the ECM that interacts with 1 integrin. We found that the disruption of lipid rafts did not markedly inhibit the expression and activation of 1 integrin. By coimmunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry, we investigated the influence of lipid rafts on the 1 integrin complex and identified nucleolin as a potential lipid-raft-dependent 1-integrin-interacting protein. Upon confirmation of the interaction between 1 integrin and nucleolin, further studies revealed that nucleolin colocalized with 1 integrin in lipid rafts and raft disruption interrupted their association. In addition, knockdown of nucle-olin markedly attenuated A375 cell spreading and migration on fibronectin. Taken together, we demonstrated that nucleolin is a critical lipid-raft-dependent 1-integrin-inte-racting protein in A375 cell spreading and migration on fibronectin.

With the changing life patterns for women in current society, increasing number of women has a tendency to postpone childbearing. Advanced maternal age has become a topic of widespread public interest, but the obstetric literature has not been as abundant in addressing this concern. This study was designed to evaluate the effects f maternal older age on reproductive performance. The 150 cases of elderly primiparas at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital from January 1990 to December 1995 were compared with 155 cases of randomly chosen young primiparas during the same period. The results were as follows; 1. There were 150 cases of elderly primiparas among the total 7649 deliveries, and incidence of the elderly primipara was 1.9%. 2. Maternal age was distributed from 35 to 44 years of age. The majority(65.3%) were in the age between 35 and 36 years. For the past 6 years, no difference was found in the distribution of year. 3. There was a significantly increased induced abortion rate and breech presentation in elderly primipara. 4. Among antenatal complications, premature rupture of membrane was the highest incidence in elderly primipara(22.7%) and control group(19.4%). The incidence of myoma was 16 cases(10.7%) in elderly primipara specifically. 5. There was a significant difference in the duration of gestational age. The preterm delivery rate was significantly increased in elderly primipara 9 cases(6.0%) compared with control group 4 cases(2.6%). 6. Concerning the modes of delivery, there was a significantly increased rate of cesarean section(78.7%) in elderly primipara. The most frequent indication for cesarean section was elderly primipara(59.3%). Other indications were cephalopelvic disproportion, breech presentation, placenta previa and failure to progress in frequency order. 7. The mean duration of labor was 8.5 hours in elderly primipara, and there was no statistical difference between the two groups. 8. There were no statistical differences between the two groups in birth weight and Apgar score. In elerly primipara, there was 1 case of intrauterine fetal death and no congenital malf- ormation. 9. Among the postpartum complications, there was a significant increase in anemia in elderly primipara 47 cases(31.3%).
