This study aims to identify the effectiveness of e-learning and its efficient utilization for middle school students based on a meta-analysis. The meta-analysis of 33 studies published in Korea led to several meaningful results. First, e-learning in English education showed significant effects for middle school students in both language abilities and affective domains. Second, a positive relationship was demonstrated between language ability improvement and affective progress through the calculation of average correlation. Third, all language skills were improved through e-learning in English education, such as reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Most of all, the greatest improvement was found in writing and speaking, which are difficult to teach in a traditional classroom environment. Finally, e-learning was more effective when an on-line community, cooperative learning, or both were integrated. The most positive improvement occurred when an on-line community and cooperative learning were used simultaneously. Thus, the meta-analysis presented the general tendency and more effective learning methods for e-learning beyond the limitations of an individual study.
국가영어능력평가시험 대비 쓰기 수업사례: 고등학교 보충반 학생들을 대상으로

듣기, 읽기, 말하기, 쓰기의 4가지 기능을 모두 평가하는 국가영어능력평가시험(NEAT)의 도입이 발표되면서 학교 현장은 기존의 읽기 듣기 위주의 수업에 변화를 가져와야 할 필요성이 대두되었다. 하지만 말하기 쓰기 수업이나 평가에 대해 축적된 현장 경험은 부족하고 변화의 주체가 되어야 하는 교사들은 현행 입시제도와 변화되는 교육 환경에 모두 대응해야 하는 부담을 안게 되었다. 이에 본 연구는 서울 인문계 고등학교 보충반(수준별 수업 하반) 학생들을 대상으로 진행 됐던 과업 중심의 쓰기 활동과 인터넷 기반 쓰기 평가 경험을 나눔으로써 학교 현장의 변화를 촉진하기 위한 교육적 시사점을 얻고자 한다. This study aims to present an analysis of the English writing class taught to Korean high school students with low proficiency and address its educational implications. Even though the NEAT (National English Ability Test) has been introduced to integrate the 4 English skills - reading, writing, listening, and speaking - within English classes, there have been several barriers preventing this realization in Korean high schools. In general, Korean English teachers have expressed the burden of both creating practical content for unfamiliar speaking and writing classes, and providing evaluation that guarantees objectivity and reliability. Therefore, this study introduces a writing class model centered on task-based activities and standardized evaluations patterned after Internet-based testing. Authentic language use requires writing skills with an understanding of discourse structure. However, current writing instruction routinely has centered around sentence-level composition. To rectify this, the inclusion of teaching and testing discourse-based writing will be presented. In conclusion, several advancements will be introduced to improve writing classes in Korean high schools.

A case of coil embolization in right superior thyroid artery pseudoaneurysm by stab wound is reported. A fifty-six-year old female, laceration and some bulging in right neck side. Aortic arch angiography, right common carotid angiography was done. Angiography shows 4×2 cm sized right thyroid artery pseudoaneurysm (FIg. 1) and (Fig. 2). We selected right superior thyroid artery by 3F micorofert (CooK, Bloomington, Ind.) and embolized by 2×4 mm (diameter), 2 cm (length) sized micro tornaido coil (CooK, Bloomington, Ind.). Post procedure right common carotid angiography was done. Angiography shows no visualized right thyroid artery pseudoaneurysm (Fig. 3).
