        Civic education in the United States has cultural tradition to realize the ideals of democracy. Various institutions such as schools, the media, civic education organizations, and government organizations provide their own civic education programs. There exists no nationwide single institution for civic education. It is not an easy task to make a consensus for civic education programs in American civic education. But American society has tried to maintain national identity through civic education with conflicting ideas. Civic education curriculum is usually composed of three essential components: civic knowledge, civic skills, and civic dispositions. Every board of school district or school organizes its own social studies curriculum to educate democratic citizenship. Professional associations and nongovernmental civic education organizations develop civic education programs and make significant contributions to civic education in schools and adult education. Americans still believe that schools have a civic mission and that education for good citizenship should be the school`s priority. But there are some controversial issues between conservatives and reformists concerning the purpose of civic education in the pluralistic characteristic of American society. We can identify some conflicts as multiculturalism vs. melting pot, civic virtue vs. critical thought. teacher`s role for specialization vs. political correctness. Despite of above mentioned controversial issues. civic education has a language of possibility functioning the public sphere of democracy and the site of cultural politics.

        2000-2003년 실시된 경복궁 근정전 수리 방향에 영향을 미친 요인과 수리 현상의 특성에 관한 연구

        This study explored the causes of restoration direction and the feature of the restoration practice of the Geunjeong Hall in the Gyeongbok Palace by analyzing the process and the result of the restoration of the heritage. The result of the study shows that the causes of restoration direction are restoration guidelines for the project, restoration principles for the architectural heritage of Korea, advisory committee of the restoration project, standard specification for the restoration of architectural heritage, and traditional craftsmanship. This study also reveals that the restoration of the Geunjeong Hall pursued enhancement of architectural functions, ideal prototype of traditional building, adoption of the contemporary scientific technology, retention of the old members, and recovery of the deformed elements.

        시판 반건조 붕장어(Conger myriaster)의 위생학적 품질특성과 품질관리를 위한 가이드라인

        Semi-dried conger eel Conger myriaster is considered as a health food in Korea due to its richness in vitamins, minerals, proteins and omega-3 fatty acids. This study characterize the sanitary quality of commercial semi-dried conger eel for developing high quality semi-dried products and suggested the guideline for controlling the quality. Moisture content ranged from 41.2% to 73.4% (mean: 61.5%), volatile basic nitrogen ranged from 16.1 to 93.6 mg/100 g (mean: 55.1 mg/100 g), and peroxide value ranged from 15.2 to 69.8 meq/kg. Viable cell counts ranged between 6.51 and 8.53 log CFU/g, while the Escherichia coli count ranged from undetectable to 4.6 log CFU/g. Based on these chemical and microbial findings, we suggest that provisions be established for development of high quality semidried conger eel as follows: 50-68% for moisture content, < 50 mg/100 g for volatile basic nitrogen content, < 60 meq/kg for peroxide value, and negative for E. coli. Among the 16 commercial semi-dried conger eel products used in this study, the standard-passed product was only GS-L.

        싸울 것인가, 도망갈 것인가?: 면역학의 진화의학적 구조, 그 철학적 의미

        이 논문의 목적은 면역학과 진화의학을 결합한 생물학적 논거와 철학적 논증을 통해 감염성 미생물의 생태를 재조명하는 데 있다. 면역학적 사유는 숙주와 기생체의 상관성을 공격, 거부, 회피, 포획, 공존의 메타포를 사용하여 설명하려는 범주이다. 기생체의 입장에서 숙주의 반응에 대처하는 방식은 기생체의 생존과 생식에 직결된다. 항바이러스를 포함한 숙주의 면역공격에 대해 기생체 대처방식의 핵심이 돌연변이에 있으며, 이러한 진화변이를 통해 면역계 저항성을 갖는다는 것이 이 논문의 주요 논지이다. 논증순서는 다음과 같다. 첫째 진화의학으로 본 질병원인론을 개략적으로 설명한다. 둘째 그런 질병 범주 중에서 면역계 질병의 현상들을 제압과 회피 그리고 중화라는 은유적 표현으로 기술한다. 셋째 이러한 면역학적 현상들이 진화의학의 적응기제로 설명될 수 있다고 논증하며, 이를 위해 항생제나 AZT와 같은 에이즈 치료약제 등 다수의 사례 중심 논거를 제시한다. 넷째 구체적으로 면역학의 숙주방어와 방어도우미 기능을 하는 항생제나 항바이러스제와 같은 약제의 공격력은 결코 미생물의 공격력을 이길 수 없는데, 그 이유는 미생물의 돌연변이 속도가 인간의 면역계 세포군의 진화속도보다 훨씬 빠르기 때문임을 논증 한다. 결론적으로 진화의학 기반 존재론의 관점에서 외부 기생체를 완전히 제거하는 것은 불가능하기 때문에 역설적으로 기생체와 숙주의 생태적 공존관계의 인식이 더 중요하다는 결론에 도달한다. 이 결론의 철학적 의미는 진화론적 생태주의와 면역학적 공존성(coalescence)에 있다. The aim of my paper is to interpret diverse relations between host and parasite by integrating evolutionary medicine and immunology. An immunological thinking could be reconstructed by specific metaphors such as `fighting`, `killing`, `protection`, `immune evasion`, `seizure`, or `coexistence`. The response of infectious microbes against the host`s attack, where the strained relations between microbes and immune system are activating, directs toward for their own surviving and reproducing through the incessant mutations of microbes as like bacteria and virus do. I will hereby show that the very philosophical category of evolutionary immunology might be formed through my thesis. It is to be unfolded as below. Firstly, I will arrange the evolutionary etiology. Secondly, I show that infectious diseases could be explained well by using the immunological metaphors. Thirdly, the relation between an evolutionary mutation of parasite and immunological activation of host will be illuminated by the concrete cases such as antibiotic, vaccine, and AZT. Fourthly, it will be highlighted that the evolution speed of mutation`s rate for infectious virus exceeds the capacity of horotelic human`s immunity. Lastly, it will be recognized that antibiotic biomedicine or antiviral medicine ultimately do not succeed in doing their role. So I suggest the necessity of medical preparation with concept of coalescence between human and microbes. My conclusion is that medical preparation of that kind of coalescence can be found in the integration of evolutionary medicine and cell based immunology.

        자란만의 해수 및 굴의 세균학적 연구

        A bacteriological study of sea water and oyster in Charan Bay was conducted to evaluate sanitary conditions of the bay and compliance of waters with the recommended bacteriological criteria for the designated area of shellfish cultivation. The Samples were collected at 23 sampling stations(Fig. 1 and Fig. 2) established once a month from January 1997 to December 1997. During the study period, temperature ranged from 4.7 to 25.6℃, transparency ranged from 3.3 to 6.2m, chemical oxygen demand ranged from 1.67 to 2.18 ㎎/ℓ, dissolved oxygen demand ranged from 5.4 to 10.0 ㎎/ℓ, dissolved nitrogen ranged from 1.65 to 7.88㎍-at/ℓ, phosphate ranged from 0.15 to 1.16㎍-at/ℓ, Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0,95 to 12.69 ㎎/ℓ, respectively. The coliform group and fecal coliform MPN`s of sea water were ranged from <1.8∼1,600 and <1.8∼540, respectively. The coliform group and fecal coliform MPN`s of oysters were ranged from <18∼16,000 and <18∼1,400, respectively. The viable cell counts in oyster ranged from 1.5×10^2 to 7.5×10^7. The bacteriological criteria of sea water in shellfish growing area should be less than 70 per 100 ㎖ of sea water for median value of coliform MPN, and below 10% of the samples .which contain over than 230 for coliform MPN or over than 43 for fecal coliform MPN. The sea water from 432 samples were complied water coliform criteria recommended far designated shellfish growing area, The coliform group, fecal coliform, classification of coliform group with IMViC reactions and pathogenic vibrios were analyzed. During the study period, infectious bacteria such as Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella sp. and were not detected from the samples, but detection ratios of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus were 7∼17% summer months.

        생물학과 의학의 상관성

        기관의 고유한 특징은 특정 단백질에 의해 유전자 발현이 조절되기 때문에 생긴다. 특정 기능으로 발달할 원래 세포는 특정 기능 유전자만 풀고 나머지 유전자는 히스톤 단백질에 의해 유전자 발현이 억제된다. 예를 들어 심장 세포는 심장 기능 유전자 열쇠만 풀고 나머지는 단단히 잠가둔 채 있다. 그러나 그 억제가 조절기능을 벗어나 그냥 잠가둔 열쇠가 풀리면 암과 같은 질병의 원인이 된다. 거꾸로 말해서 그 억제된 열쇠를 인위적으로 풀면 모든 세포를 복제 할 수 있다는 이론적 가능성이 된다. 우리는 그 발현의 시점 그리고 발현의 조건을 발생학적 “신호”라고 부른다. 특히 나는 이 신호 개념을 공간적 신호 개념과 시간적 신호 개념으로 나누어 설명한다. 신호 연구는 암 치료와 같은 현대의 학에서 필수의 연구영역이지만 철학적으로도 중요한 인식론적 패러다임을 갖는다. 특히 진화생물학적 시간의 의미를 배태한 시간적 발생 신호 개념을 수용할 때 그 철학적 기초연구가 탄탄해질 수 있다고 본다. 그런 시간적 신호 개념을 통해서 비로소 실질적인 의료 적용이 가능하다고 주장한다. Peculiar traits of organic occurs because of difference that gene expression by specification protein is controlled. Original embryo cell to develop by specification function opened the expression key of the specification function gene and let the remainder gene be closed by histone protein. For example, heart cell opens heart function gene key and there is remainder locking hard. If the expression control is out of order, the broken expression but become cause of disease such as cancer. It furthermore deals with artificial expression. It gets into the theoretical possibility that can reproduce embryo cells to direction that own want if solve the inhibited key artificially speaking conversely. We call the visual point and conditions of revelation of expression developmental biological “Signal”. I divide the signal temporal signal and spatial signal. The temporal signal research is not only the indispensable area of the biomedicine such as cancer treatment, but also a important paradigm of philosophical epistemology. The goal of this paper is to extend the argument that the temporal signal concept could be accepted through the developmental time conceived the history of life evolution. I’ll claim furthermore that medical treatment application could be realized through such spatial signal concept.
